Whatch your diet. Grain products and dairy are known culprits. As a farmer working regularly in dusty conditions I speak from experience. When I eliminate wheat products entirely, and restrict dairy to cream in the odd cup of coffee, my allergy problems are much less. I don't like popping pills if not absolutely necessary.

Get tested for what you are most allergic to, go on a course of allergy immunisation injections and never have to worry about it again. I did this over 30 years ago and only now I’m in Europe do I get a bit of hayfever from the pollen in spring.

I also (used to) struggle with severe allergies especially around dry grass to the point where I had to he admitted to hospital because I couldn't breathe. It came down to the type of meds I was taking through trial and error. My combination may not work for you, but I take:

- Allerway pills (1x daily, first thing when I wake up)

- Avamys spray (1x spray in each nostril daily, first thing when I wake up)

I also carry 80mg of prednisone with me in case I have a sever reaction (also alergic to paracetemol and aspirin so it has come in handy before).

The trick for me is to stay on the stuff permanently to avoid having the reaction in the first place - trying to get rid of it once it happens is alot harder than just preventing it.

A proper assessment of your allergies is the first step - only when you know what you are allergic to can one treat it properly.

Usually your gp can draw blood and send it off for the required tests - then a specialist allegoligist (sp) can decide on appropriate treatment which may include a desensitisation program or treatment with a variety of other drugs.

Sorry to hijack the thread...

But we think our two year old has allergies, can he be tested at this age and  who'd you recommend if so?

Many thanks Gents .. your advice is invaluable. I know from tests that grass and dust are the big culprits and despute using avamis and deselex i still struggle today with the after affects of yesterdays race. I think the solution lies in a combination of you said... thanks once again

Where are you based?

2yo is tricky but not impossible - might be worth a chat to your pediatrician as a start.

Being sensitive to dust is not the same as being allergic to something - most grass allergies I are to bent grass - and there is not a whole lot of that in SA.

Personally I think you should consider a workup for exercise induced asthma - I have posted a couple of times on how to do a quick and dirty test to see if it is a possibility- search and you will find it - not going to try retyping it on my phone.
