The latest is he had a panic attack/episode of some of some sorts after his arrest in Germany and has been committed to a psychiatric hospital...(not voluntary)

Tough times ahead for him.. some very serious charges that he is facing and no doubt he will face some prison time .. that last binge may not have been the best idea..

Being a great bicycle rider should not elicit a sympathetic reaction from the cycling community.

He assaulted/choked a prostitute according to the latest report whilst on alcohol and drugs.

Sorry no sympathy for this guy, hope they chuck his ass in jail.

Sounds like a real douchebag.

Being a great cyclist brings it to the attention of the cycling public

Sympathy is not mandatory and depends on individual feeling and empathy.

I liked JU as a cyclist, maybe that’s why I feel some sympathy for him and hope he comes right. He should still take his punishment like anyone else in the same situation.

Not good to see someone I once admired down in the gutter like this.

His issues with drugs have been around for years. I remember him being arrested on drug related charges when he was still riding. I think it involved him crashing his Porsche outside a nightclub or something. Similar to the Tom Boonen story.

Do people who have spent time at the top of the tree, in terms of fame and public attention, crave excitement more than the rest of us and no up getting into these situations?

Thinking about Phil Rudd, ex drummer with AC/DC - lived in NZ and got mixed up in drugs, prostitutes and gangsters and ended up being charged with plotting to murder someone.

Yep

He has been on a downward spiral for some time now, with a few sober months in between.

I too was a JU fan.. is it sad to see, of course it is, should he face the music, most definitely, does his drug and alcohol problem excuse his actions, no ways!

He is also in some desperate need of help, but as we know no amount of help will help if he doesn't want it.

Sure, at the same time though it doesn't mean the situations are mutually exclusive from empathy either.

For me I have empathy for the scenario as a whole, it's tragic from every angle and compounded from all the publicity.

No sympathy for his arrest though, he must face the music and the (apparent) involuntary psychiatric committal is probably overdue.

Hopefully the woman assaulted is also receiving the support she needs, outside of media coverage and ironically the public outrage against Ullrich.

It is all a very shitty situation for them and those close to them.

He has always had serious problems specially in the off season even at his best time .
He always struggeled to practice without an audience, always weight problems at the beginning of the season .
Hope he comes right

Finally someone mentions the woman that got assaulted.

No sympathy from me here, (dont care if he was the pope) somone else has been hurt, its not about him.

It's what's on our collective radar... hence the attention

as for sympathy... he has issues than need resolving. If those issues result in bad behaviour/criminal acts, then he needs to be held accountable. sympathy and accountability are two very different things

I don’t think sympathy should be confused for weakness, preferential treatment or bias.

I really feel sorry for people end up like this, but that doesn’t mean they should be treated in any special way.

To be a pro, you need a certain personality. All too often the traits needed to succeed in these cut throat environments have a massive negative. Once the adoration stops, the depression sets in.

Just look locally at how some of our pros have had their own issues.

Do we also have "Pro's"?
