I would go for the Kross, but that's based purely because I like something a bit different. I also have a preference for Sram 12spd groupos over Shimano 11spd.

 

Both are out and out race bikes from good brands, so I don't think you can go wrong with either - it will come down to preference at the end of the day.

Purely on looks (and i am not talking about the poodle) i would go for the Kross.

 

But go ride both bikes and then make your decision.

I've only ridden the Merida. It's nice but there are better hardtail like a cannondale F-Si or bianchi methanol cv.

 

I've never seen let alone touched a Kross so can't comment. I'd probably get it because between the poodle and Maya the bee I'd be a happy man

For a high end hardtail, also check the classifieds. Some riders drop a lot of cash on a high spec, only to find that they should have bought a dual-sus.

 

That said, I built my hardtail up with new components, which I accumulated over 2 years from specials and sales. Total spend was R35k

 

Rocky Mountain Vertex 999, SID, XTR drivetrain, Hope Stealth Race brakes, Hollowgram SI2 crank, Wide Lightning wheels. 8.8kg with pedals and slime.
