The race organisers bumped the race to earlier.

That and stocking the water points well enough is about all that they could do hey.

Hopefully everybody got through okay under the angry sun.

Yesterday was the first time I've ever been jealous of somebody with a Camelbak

I might have laughed at several of the guys in our group that rocked up with Camelbaks. We're in B - we're supposed to look fast, and cool, and pro-like. Not like group F at the local MTB ride!

I'm quite sure they all laughed at us at around 140kms when we were sucking on empty bottles wishing for one more sip!

Also, thanks to the volunteers/support staff who were also out there for who knows how long. They were still mostly in a cheerful mood where I had lost my sense of humour at around 35degrees and very much so by the time my computer showed 41!

I was riding just behind your buddy when I saw you peeling to the right to take a bit of stretch ...  wheels touching... glad you guys are ok and even better you had medical assitance almost immediately...

That sir would be me as the first victim and two more after that.  the one burst a rear tire braking not to hit me in the back and the other broke his rear derailed (bummer). hitting the deck as well.

We all got up unscaved (in the broken any body parts department). so i consider us very very lucky indeed.  The PPA route petrol bus arrived luckily 5 minutes later, patched up my arm and i went on to finish.  Felt bad for the other two that had to get on the bus due to the bikes not being roadworthy after that.  But its ma part of the game i guess and super stoked that we all got off so lightly. - i knew something was up when i could only find my long fingered gloves....

On the matter of the Heat:  I was being sterilized by the medics at the finish line by the medics when the race DR was called in to make a call on the heat and if the race should continue.  I did't stick around for that, but from what i picked up is that it was already 38deg and they were  seriously worried for the back markers on the long route.  I must say that HK bunch on the 109km already caught after some of those groups after hells and then at regular intervals after that before we peeled of at windmeul - i was thinking that i was glad im doing the short one, cause its gonna be a long day in that heat and youre only there now.

Let's check if you can get one more drop out of that bottle...maybe it's not THAT empty...yes it is. Ten KM later and even more desperate...try again...yes, it's really empty

Lol after Malmesbury I wanted to ask the camelback toppie for a sip....  B was fun until that point.

tbh I think it is a very hard decision to make for organisers. It is not as if there is a fixed temperature x and a wind speed y where the organisers know now we stop the race and everyone will agree. It's a judgment call and with heat you cannot fully rely on weather predictions, you have to see how it pans out during the day. What if they cancelled the race the morning and the heat wasn't as bad as predicted?

As with any judgement call some will agree and some not, My gut feel is that there would have been far more complaints on here if they cancelled. If you are going to cancel a road race in the WC everytime it is a bit hotter than normal, the wind is stronger than normal or we have unexpected rain we are going to have to cancel have the road races in spring/summer. Dealing with elements is part of cycling imo. One Tonner is an extreme event for us weekend warriors not just another fun ride, you should come well prepared to handle harsh weather.

+10000.  170km, is something you actually need to train for and have solid conditioning. If your avg speed is in the low 20's (kmh) then you probably not up for it and should not have entered. I finished with an avg speed of 30kmh. If I had to finish at 22kmh avg, I probably would not have made it. 8 hours in that sun will knacker anybody, regardless of how good you are. Thankfully, the majority of those that finished were doing 25kmh plus avg. Not sure how many DNF cos race was 'stopped'

But well done to all!

Had a little chuckle looking at our flyby, some smart H, F and E riders that managed to hook on for massive parts of the ride gaining 20 minutes on the next best finishers. We remember the one old ballie, he made sure he was 2nd wheel after the paceline and let no one else sit there. Kudos.

On the racetec results there are a few out of place riders :D

You guys came flying past me in D-E, but I was on the far left of the bunch so was boxed in, otherwise I would have tried (emphasis on tried) to catch a ride as well

I hung back, 4 bikes.

I wanted the solid work out in my legs.

For my up coming trip

And to think there were people doing a famous MTB stage race in the same heat in the valley of Grabouw.

Don't know what is worse: doing a road race on tar in this heat where the heat radiates from the tar, or doing a tough climb in the mountains with no wind or cool air to cool your body.

Cycling in summer in the Western Cape is not for sissies.

This is digging deep, this is when your mind and body seperate !!

Looks like a rough day, pump is gone, shoe coming off, saddle gone and brakes rubbing.

At least his socks are the correct length.
