Interesting sub article to your link

SAA, now under business rescue, has put billions of rands of planes up for sale – even though most are in regular use for flights to major destinations around the world....

All but one of the planes are reportedly in use, flying to Frankfurt, New York, Hong Kong, Munich, and Perth.

LOL the planes are just standing here taking up space. Some days we have to rent parking space from ACSA on the old cross runway .

Frankfurt/Munich and New York flights are going to be done by the new A350 very soon. Hong Kong is going to be cancelled as it doesn't make money.

While there is a lot that is correct in the article some is just so wrong and it is pretty important stuff.

Interesting, makes sense thanks

Yeah planes even when they stand around not flying cost plenty

We have one of our customers GV that has not flown since May last year (was impounded by the cops for drug smuggling) and it’s costing the owners who were not involved with the drugs at all, a small fortune every month just in parking and storage maintenance.

Missed this yesterday.  Not sure if it was posted but actually feel like crying when reading this ...

Seems one of the oldest airlines finally kicking the bucket.  :(

I am glad they added this in

SAA Technical (SAAT) looks set to be the jewel in the crown of the company, should it be broken up and sold in parts. Overtures from European carriers have been made to buy the unit, with experts in the field saying that it is one of the best functioning divisions in the struggling company. No decision has been taken regarding whether SAAT will be wholly sold, or only a part of it.

That's a lot of fuel. at very low altitude, over a built up area. What a mess!

An involuntary paraffin shower.... I can just see the American lawyers getting all excited

And the lawyers are going to be coining it big time, since the plane dumped over 6 schools, with many kids suffering mild skin irritations and lung problems according to the news. The highest altitude the plane achieved was 8000 feet, and the dumping seems to have occurred by about 3000 to 4000 feet.

Watch the "chemtrail crowd" go all ape-shut now...

The Blanco did a segment on it....

When they declared the emergency, ATC asked if they would dump fuel, they said no (which should have been over the ocean at a recommended altitude) they just decided to do it anyway on downwind at 2000 ft AGL  and finals to reduce landing weight ... what a F up.

As you said........... a right F up.

Based on the information at hand I wonder why they did not take the time to complete the dumping in the correct manner and over the designated are. Compressor stalls should not be cause for rushing. Shut it down, run the check lists and return in an orderly manner.

But then I was not there to know their reasoning and nor do I fly Trip 7’s.
