Hi Everyone.

I am trying to help an ex business partner in South Africa look for full time employment.

I ran a successful business with this man for 7 years prior to emigrating.

Unfortunately due to circumstances outside of his control he is entering the job market.

His history centres around freight/warehousing and more recently deep operational management.

Quite a few of you have actually met him and those that have will know that a more honest and hardworking family man is hard to find.

Johannesburg based.

Please keep him/me in mind if you spot anything.

It’s not often I ask the hub for help, so I am using up all my fake internet brownie points on this one.

Thanks.

Well 2019's so far been a fun ride... Okay so I just got retrenched after 10 years at a firm and being the sole breadwinner and family man, thats a scary place. I guess the writing was on the wall with the economy slamming on brakes which means the building industry slams the brakes even harder and most of my offices jobs getting canned.

So instead of calling myself unemployed, I'm going with entrepreneur and setting up my own business. (Ill go back to unemployed if that doesn't work!)

So question: The hub is a community of likeminded individuals... is there a place to list services or businesses not necessarily related to cycling? Im am a way over qualified Architect and beyond offering to design your dream pain cave for zwift I don't think the classifieds are the right place.

or

does anyone have any Ideas how to market ones services/business beyond the usual mediums of social media (facebook/instagram/twitter), Web, network & word of mouth? I tried LinkedIn a while back but the only contacts that ever tried connecting were people trying to sell building products or get work from me?

I really would appreciate any input you might have!

@ Beard - sorry to hear about your misfortune. My experience is similar in that the company I worked for closed it's doors in middle Feb. It was a small Consulting Structural Engineering firm.

Writing was also on the wall - but the wall suddenly got very close, and we slammed into it.

January salaries were delayed and then we were told that Feb salaries couldn't be paid and the company had no choice but to close it's doors. So, no retrenchment package, leave pay etc - that stung a bit.

I floated around in the job market for a while and even dabbled in a career change 'cos now was as good an opportunity as ever!', but nothing came of that and I settled back into Plan B - start my own company (In hind sight, that should have been Plan A years ago).

So, here I am. Working from home on the desk that I built myself, scratching around trying to make contact with as many people as possible and build a network to work with and for. People have been supportive and acknowledge that this is k@k, but they say that in years to come I will look back and see this as the best thing that could have happened. 'Running your own show and being your own boss is great' and all that. I need to believe it and focus on getting through this so that I can look back and agree.

Each week feels better and more productive. The end of each month is stressful, but I need to remain positive, upbeat and optimistic during the days in between. Luckily, my wife has a full time job to ease the pressure, but it's been an interesting year so far.

Oh, and give LinkedIn another go - I have made contact with people I used to know and that has been useful. It's also handy for keeping up to date with the industry and who is doing what. You just need to be more selective about who you follow and link up with etc.

I wish you luck and strength in your new endeavour.

That's a tough place to be in, sorry to hear about that. I was in a similar position 2.5 years back. Got retrenched, got rebuffed by the job market, so I decided to give it a go on my own.

Advice? I'm good at what I do, but suck at marketing, sales, etc. all the stuff needed to get clients. I became shameless, punted myself to anybody who looked like they might need my services, and, if they stuck around, treated them like gold. Asked those clients to refer me to others.

Things are mostly ok now, the odd month here and there has my heart palpitating every so often, but you have to do what you do.

Diversified a bit into services related to what I was doing, and busy turning a love for coffee into a sustainable business with my brother, which will start paying dividends in another year or so.

Thank you for this, I needed that... its good to know that other people have gone through this and made it out stronger and better... or at the very least alive. I am working my network and everyone and anyone I know and yes Ive got one or two tiny jobs that at the moment are getting amazing service because I have a lot of time on my hands. Unfortunately they only just about cover my petrol bill at the moment.

I will definitely give Linkedin another go but its definitely good to know people who have gone through the struggle of starting a business and can advise what works and what doesnt from personal experience.

@SPLAT  Structural engineer... Send me a DM and maybe we can help each other out in the future as Im quickly learning its not what you know but who you know that makes a big difference!

An almost 2 year long experiment came to a stop today for me , so now I'm unemployed aswell.

before i was studying N subjects related to becoming an electrician ( up to N3 now ) I've also done A dedicated course at a technical college where i accumulated roughly 1000hrs on everything from small electronics to large scale 3 phase installations

I'm looking for an apprenticeship/ "appyship" to finish the experience I still need and hopefully the person would help to set me up for my trade test ..If I need to work for free I will , getting this done is now my top priority

If anyone know someone that could take me on

Please pm me or send me their email address for all the documentation

Based in Wierda park X2 , Centurion

cheers :)
