I'd like to throw another dog into the fight... Bryton.

If you go for the smaller Bryton 330, the Garmin 520 sort of equivalent, you're getting great battery life at a great price, ANT+, BLE, Wifi. There is mapping but I've never used it. They're currently sponsoring Quick-Step on the world tour so they must be doing something right.

The Bryton 530 is a good option as well, in fact the Neostrack is based on the 530's hardware but Giant has redone the software (and rehoused/rebranded it obviously).

All that being said, I still use my ELEMNT Bolt for anything under 6 hours and I think it blows the 520 out of the water in terms of user-friendliness and design execution.

If you're on a budget, the Bryton or Neostrack are great, but if you're spending Garmin money, get the Wahoo instead

Love my 520, battery life I'd say is the only negative. What really impressed over and above GPS, HR etc was how much else just works seamless with it e.g.

  • Controlling your IDT - route resistance profile replay, resistance control if you just want a quick session with no phone/PC.
  • Power meter display, analytics, integration
  • Di2 electronic groupset display, control, shiftier button integration to toggle screens
  • Open maps compatibility, screen is a bit sucky for navigation, but useful when your unexplored territory
  • SMS notifications on the heads up unit
  • Garmin portal stats and integration with Strava, Discovery etc

Haven't used the other units, but generally since the 520 is so popular most of the 'extra stuff' works well out the box with it.

Just go with Garmin been there done that, goedkoop is duur koop and Garmin will be supported later on when you want to connect with 3rd parties, and you have the unit and don't have to lay out rands again. ill got the 520

520 on the MTB ... it just WORKS

I have lost my faith in the 520 and Garmin support

Had mine for less than a year before it broke, have been waiting for close to a month now for a replacement unit.

My gut feel (really just a hunch) is that part of the reason I am waiting so long is that there are a number of units out there that needs to be replaced by Garmin

I will go for the Garmin. I dont have the 520, but if I see how many people use them, then something must be working right.

People use them because of Discovery Vitality. If I had a choice of an alternative unit that Vitality accepts then I would jump because Garmin's lack of reliability, upload issues, software update issues, etc is legendary.

Wahoo Element Bolt would be my choice for budget unit or even Sigma RoX 11.0

Garmin is massively overrated and overpriced

I have the BRYTON  330 and there is nothing wrong with it. Does what I require and it was cheap.Upload to Strava a breeze. customizable. PS, I had to order mine form Ciclio in Italy. took about 2 weeks.

Had the Edge 500 now the 520, also the Fenix 3 and now the Fenix 5.  Have never had reliability issues or software update issues and currently keep my Fenix 5 up to date with the beta versions, long before they get pushed as mainstream updates... still no issue even though they are beta.

When my 500 stopped working after many years of abuse, Garmin exchanged/upgraded to the 520 at nominal cost.

Majority of the pro peleton are on 520's unless sponsor says otherwise.

Seems to be a unique viewpoint. Presume you’ve had some bad experiences.

Quite a few saying something similar so how is it a unique viewpoint?

Not a unique viewpoint iro recommending the other units. Unique on this thread in terms of negative about Garmin.

Garmin Edge 130 for the win on an mtb. It's nice and small. Had the edge 520 and it was just too big for me...

Edge 130 can do nearly everything the 520 can and it's small.

Been using a number of Garmin products including watches and mtb units, all work flawlessly. No issues whatsoever and ther warranty is just awesome.
