Must-have albums for your music collection

Readsalot

Recommended Posts

What are the albums you consider essential to your music collection? Albums you will keep replacing/upgrading, no matter how much music technology changes.

Rules:

Must be a whole album, not just one song, but it can be a Best Of collection, like Creedence Clearwater Revival - The Premier Collection.

Must name specific albums, not just "everything by Pink Floyd".

Can be soundtracks, like 1492 Conquest of Paradise by Vangelis.

In no particular order

1. Peter Gabriel, Secret World Live

Ridiculously incredible

B. Tananas, Tananas

Till I discovered them (their drummer played for Sting when he was out on his Ten Summoner's Travels Tour) I did not know that a) such music existed and that b) South Africa was capable of producing music of such a high level of playing, musicianship, sounds and melodies

>. John Mellencamp, Mr Happy Go Lucky

It's a drumming thing. Plus some of the most incredible guitar tones my ears have ever set their eyes on

4. RY X, Dawn

So much space and beauty...

5. Any of the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards Compilation CD's

iii. Lenny Kravitz, Universal Love Tour

It's a religious experience seeing Lenny and his band in their prime

9. Pearl Jam, Vs.

<. There are many others...

EDIT:

Sountracks...

1. Gustavo Santaolalla, 21 Grams & Babel

2. Thomas Newman, White Oleander

3. O Brother, Where Art Though

4. Romeo & Juliet (The one with Leo)

5. John Williams, Memoirs of a Geisha

Pink Floyd - Meddle...

Wildernessking - Mystical Future

Ah, an easy-listening pop fan, I see  :D

I think the only one on your list that might make my collection is Meddle, but I'll have to give it another listen. I like some songs by Radiohead and Black Sabbath, but not enough for a whole album.

Morphine's Yes is in my collection, though, as are Roger Waters' two albums, Amused to Death and Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking.

I'll give these three a try, thanks.

metallica - black

nirvana - in utero

U2 - joshua tree

the Shadows- greatest hits

I'm a bit tired of Metallica and U2 at the moment, so they're in my Not Now collection. Never been a Nirvana fan (or grunge in general), but The Shadows is worth a listen to again, thanks.

I forgot about Amused to death, should be in there.

Meddle, Sabbath debut, Ok Computer etc were all groundbreaking albums. If everyone liked them they would have been long forgotten.

Wildernessking is the best thing to come out of the SA metal scene, ok apart from Kobus and VOD maybe ????

I know that many albums listed here will be repeats of everyone's favourite cult classics.

I would probably agree with most of them. But if we're talking strictly albums here.

As a reflection of the content of that album. Most of my favourite's would come from movie soundtracks. The really good ones tend to cherry pick only the best tracks.

Off the top of my head my favourite soundtracks are from the following movies.

Pulp Fiction

Romeo and Juliet

Tron

Guardians of the Galaxy

Then there are movies I enjoy just for the score. Tracks that were in the movie but didn't necessarily feature in the soundtrack. Mostly Hans Zimmer stuff to be fair but there are some that I remember listening to only to be disappointed that the best ones remained in the score and weren't in the album.

8 mile

Donnie Darko

Garden State

More would probably occur to me later...

So a couple of months ago a friend posted on Facebook a challenge to post an album a day that had an influence on them. As part I spent a bit of time thinking about it. I would replace every single one of these

Not the best albums ever or most influential to many artists else I would have revolver or the velvet underground... it's Just 12 albums that had significance for me in my life.

The one album I love so much just because it's so cool is the 10" wedding present Ukrainian john peel sessions (ukrainski vistupi v Ivana pila) not in my graphic below but would definitely replace it if I lost it

Kobus! 'Kinderhel' - who knew the world would know such a lekker Afrikaans doomfest.

Die bloed in hul are verkrummelende stof
Klosse hul hare, verdorde lippe grof
Die Lied van die Vlieë op hul roofrooi wonde vleis
Strompelende lyke by die Hemelhekke weggewys

Niks om te onthou, treur of berou
Die vlamme ysig koud
In die kinderhel

Slaap pikanini, ons vee's in die kraal
Almal ons skapies en bokkies
More vroeg kry jy van soet pap 'n maal
En 'n paar spierwitte sokkies

Siele ontruim, geen asem in hul bors
Geen trane, geen glimlag
Emosie ewig opgeskort

Strompelende lyke by die Hemelhekke weggewys

Niks om te onthou, treur of berou
Die vlamme ysig koud
In die kinderhel

They have a macabre fascination with Cannibal Corpse.
