Did a lot of research and testing years ago on tactical glasses and the benefits of real v fake as well as cheap v expensive. Since then I have had a passing interest in glasses, from a safety perspective. The article I quoted just happened to be the first that came up in a Google search, however sure as **** there are almost endless similar examples. Don't fall into the trap of believing the cowcrap about "made in the same factory with a different label but same thing" nonsense.

Glasses and helmets are not an area to risk cheap fakes, imho, however, you go ahead and do whatever the **** you like. It's your eyes.

Fearmongering.

So this article has scientific evidence that a legit glass wouldn't have broken?

Thanks, that's my ******* plan, imho. Never had a problem, don't plan on having a problem either.

My feeling, not scientific, is the same as this guy.

Fake oakley's are made of a harder plastic that will break much easier on impact than a real Oakley that's fact, Jt12 here on the hub can post some pics of how his  Jawbreaker looked after a heavy crash.

You expect a pair of sunnies to protect you in a crash? That's asking quite a lot don't you think?

No... but I expect them protect my eyes and not splinter into my eye ball when they break

Ok well that makes a lot of sense and is a rather horrific thought. Count me a little more educated thanks.

I have 2 pairs of real oakleys(jawbreakers) and had 1 pair of fakes(also jawbreakers). The real ones are already quite a few years old and are still going strong. The fakes on the other hand didn't last long before the frames broke on the rotating part when changing lenses, They were also very uncomfortable compared to the real ones. My real ones also only came with 2 sets of lenses where the fake came with 3. I knew they were fake when I bought them off aliexpress though. The real ones, the one set I won from supersport during the TDF one year and the other set I bought on sale from a proper online cycling website and IICR paid over R2k for them. The fake ones cost me like R200.

This safety argument is silly.

The important thing is lens material. Almost all manufacturers (branded, fake, etc) use polycarbonate. Its cheap, easy to manufacture, and impact resistant.

There are however branded and fake glasses that do not have polycarb lenses - these do tend to shatter. You can get custom glass lenses for oakley etc. that will not be impact resistent.

Oakleys, fakes, R50 hardware store safety glasses will typically all provide protection, as their lenses are all impact resistent polycarb.

I totally agree that build quality, coatings, fit, durability, etc. may be vastly different, and selling fakes is just wrong; but from a safety aspect... I’m not sure it makes a difference.

Fake sunglasses are not made to any quality specs eg Oakleys Flight jackets are manufactured to ANZI Z80.3 for optical and impact standards. This is not the same as the safety glasses standard 87.1, but it does ensure some impact resistance as well as UV protection, a crap load more than fake sunnies.....this costs money to achieve and maintain. Fakes also allow tons of unwanted light through causing eye strain and tiredness...
