"The driver ran away [from] after the accident. One passenger from the car stayed behind and has been treated for minor injuries," Mahamba confirmed.

"Because [we know his identity], we request he hand himself over to the police so that a statement can be obtained to establish what happened."

He fled the scene and best the police can do is "request" that he hand himself over.

Worse than the "request" idea is what they say they plan to do with the driver: "so that a statement can be obtained" Motherbuffer  :cursing: How about : So we can test the f***** for every drug ever made by man, including hot cross buns, arrest him for manslaughter and stick his arse behind bars until a judge and a court can decide what to do with him for the long term?

What a sad indictment of our lawless society that I personally choose not to do early morning rides. All this group was trying to do was enjoy a Friday morning off and have some healthy fun

What a terrible start to Easter for the the families involved while this coward flees. Accidents can happen and if you're sober you can call an ambulance and wait. Fleeing should have he same legal consequences as the harshest DUI sentence.

RIP.

This is why it is so important to ride with cameras on the bike...we have 2 people in the group who ride with cameras attached to the their bike...a taxi almost bumped me off the bike...got home downloaded the footage and bingo...the whole incident was recorded with a clear pic of the number plate.

Feck. Just found out that the cyclist who was killed was a year above me at my school and we used to play Junior soccer together. Phenomenal sportsman and passionate cyclist. Father and husband. So sick of this impotent government in South Africa

Strength to all.

Just got word of two club members knocked down by a taxi in Wynberg, Cape Town ... thankfully nothing as serious.

I may just pack away my bike for the rest of the weekend. :(

So Sad !.This should be an open and shut case ,but will probably drag on for years with no consequences to the driver ,because when he hands himself over he will be sober and able to lie and say the sun was in his eyes or something similar

So, drivers' identity is known.

Coppers better do something for a change and track him down ASAP. No bail because he proved to be a flight risk already. Charged with manslaughter. Wait in jail until court case. ....... :cursing:

RIP fellow cyclist

charge should be murder. He /She left the scene.

lock them up and throw away the key. By Sunday they'll be the Easter bunny

RIP fellow rider and thoughts with all the families concerned. Thoughts also with the riders who weren't actually hit but had to see what happened to their friends right in front of them.

Strength to them all.

Bonus.

Condolences to the family and hope for a speedy recovery for the injured. Just got back from a ride and read this - shocking! Can the authorities just do their jobs and apprehend the driver! Some justice is needed in this country!

This really upsets me. Strength to the family who will now have to struggle on without a father.

This is exactly why I don't do any more rides early morning. Drunken idiots in cars piss me off.
