hey all,

Im wanting to lean up (winter spread is setting in) and get my shape back for summer.... Any diet advice will be greatly appreciated.

What shape are you looking for?

What is the best for your body type?

Maybe you should see a dietician or nutritionist?

The Fitbit app is awesome, tracking each and everything you eat, breaking down into, protein, fat & carbs, showing you exactly where you need to consume less or more.

It's quite simple: Everything in moderation, if you want to stuff your face with whatever your body craves at that moment in time, then ensure that you do not only stop once it's finished  :whistling:

If you can get yourself well versed in the art of "carb counting" and you can combine this with calories burnt then you'll never put on weight.

By just reading the packet and understanding the numbers you're about to consume will create some awareness. I mean if a healthy male needs to consume around 2000 calories per day but you consume 4000 then guess what?

Not all of the 4000 calories will come out, some will be stored  :D.

Basically, you can't have your cake and eat it.

So many people eat less but still drink beer or they ride then binge eat more calories than they burnt.

If you're putting on weight, cut out what you know is a bad decision. Avoid over eating and make good life decisions.

There is no magic to it. It comes down to small life decisions that you already know the answer to.

We aren't children. If you drink alcohol, drink less. If you eat take aways, don't. If you eat sweeties and drink sugary drinks, don't.

If you want to get ripped and start winning races etc go to a dietitian, but if you just want to stop the winter spread, think before you eat/drink

I’m the poster child for paragraph 2

Ok whilst on the diet advice thread i need some "advice" i eat 2 Weetbix every morning of my life with milk. Just because it is easy and convenient. I want to "replace" it with other "convenient" breakfast.....  ( Oh and i can barely boil an egg    :w00t: )

It is really as easy as that. But guess what? Many many people still don't know where to start and hence just get lost in the pantry.

No one seems to have touched on the drink more water aspect of weight management. Water is needed to transport nutrients in the body. Without it you're still not going to lose much.

Simply cutting out sugar isn't a silver bullet either because you have to train the body to look for other fuel sources and this is where many people can't sustain the healthy eating.

It takes a lot more discipline to maintain healthy eating than it does to go grab a pizza and beer with the boys, and then a steak and chips the following evening and a lekker braai on Friday, Saturday and Sunday

oats, plain yoghurt (unsweetened) and a fruit

how much depends on your natural build.

my breakfast adds about 400gr to my weight at the start of the day. Easy to make. Sometimes push it through the blender for the smoothie experience

For some 40 years that is what I did as well.

Imagine my shock and horor when the dietitian threw her toys out the cot .... apparently you should alternate breakfast with a range of different options.

So now my breakfast is one of the following :

Jungle Oats (original)

Whole wheat Pronutro (also Apple bake)

All bran

Muesli, the Weight Less or Vital products

Omelett on whole wheat bread

The following are also on the option list -

Wheebix Lite

Future Life - Original, Zero pr Crunch

PS - these are the typical diabetic options .... so may not be applicable to 90% of the readers here, though still good options

Sounds about right.

2 portions protein

2 portions starch

1 fruit portion.

For me that's 2 eggs

I slice wholewheat toast

1 banana

Or 200ml yoghurt

60gr of muesli

This is where the fun starts with diabetes ....

only two small fruits during the day, and not at the same time ....

typically the one fruit will be 3 hours after breakfast.

So much "easier" when you can just eat enough of the right stuff earlier, and your body sorts out when it needs what until the next meal ....

The key to controlling diabetes being that you have :

- Breakfast

- 3 hours later a snack(currently this is my big challenge, as I now tend to over snack in the morning ... too much is too much, even when you eat healthy foods!!)

- Lunch

- jip, 3 hours later time for a snack  98% of the time I get this one right, the rest I am too busy and forget about it - MISTAKE !!

- supper ....

- you guessed it ... a small snack at 20:00, typically whole wheat rusk and tea/coffee ... fibre and all that ....

Makes it fun to plan a longer ride on the bike.  No use in trying to eat enough before the ride.  Got to plan to take stuff with, or plan the ride with a stop for an omelette at Meerendal ...  I know of a few diabetics that have gone through the trouble of working with coaches and dietitians to workout an eating and suppliment plan for their races.  It CAN be done, but more schlep than I want now.....

Type 1 or Type 2?

Type 1 or Type 2?

Type 2.  Sticking to the eating plan and with regular moderate exercise my HBA1C stays around 5,4, for the last 2 years.   Before this my sugar was all over the show, and I was heading for insulin injections.  Now on two tablets a day, lightest dosage.  But then again, mine is the classic "life style" type .....  TOTALLY avoidable !!   Sadly the sins of the past cant be wiped away though ....

Spent the weekend with a young lady that is Type 1 .... WOW !!  Sugar is all over the show !!!  This is when you realise just how bad this can be.
