Magic mary's.

I don't get you and Myles ..... either you guys are flipping fast super shredders or just plain k@k at being light on the bike and always aim at the sharpest rocks to be wrecking so many tyres ... or both of the above combined :P

I am a good 20kg's more than you in my birthday suit and have never wrecked a EXO casing.

I have had poor success with the previous gen Hans D in snake skin carcass though with punctures through the tread.

There's both, momentum is linear with both mass and velocity. And yes I may not be light, but i don't need to be if there's equipment that works for my riding style.

Fair enough I can certainly accept that you have a preferred manner of riding, but then accept and own that.

Now not everyone out there has the same technique as yourself, so the example of an EXO carcass not being reliable is rider dependent and not a product not performing to it's intended purpose.

Which is what I said. And when you're spending money on tyres. Why buy an EXO and take the chance when you do not have to for very marginal mass penalty.

I never even had a flat tyre before, all im actually trying to ask is what is al good all rounder tyre. 1 that i can do the k2c with and 1 that will be reliable on rocks and technical afterwards. Not ikon or ardent.

This can of worms is bigger than the flats vs clips story :P

Front or back tyre?

Front the Maxiss DHR2 in EXO is great. Also is the Spez Eliminator in GRID (gris appears most similar to EXO, Control is floppy). The Spez has a very round priofile and has had excellent grip in the dry and damp and is now my front tyre choice OVER the Mary.

Rear tyre, the Maxiss Aggressor is great, but only in EXO which works for most, but if you're charging or riding sloppy it can be unforgiving in that sidewall. If it came to RSA in DD then it would for sure be my tyre of choice out back, but alas :(

The Spez Slaughter is very rad as well as others pointed out (it's in the same class as the Maxiss Minion SS or Schwalbe Rock Razor and the new e13 something).

There are way too many to choose from to recommend just one. But seeing as you specifically asked about the Mary initially, it's a great tyre and comes in a casing that will hold up to almost anything, both front and rear. However, I think the Elim is better suited all around to conditions in and around CT as a front tyre (and a rear for that matter).

I went half Mary on my HT and it was not a good idea. I'm fully Ardent now.

On a HT or marathon bike there's more weight over the front wheel than on a slacked out DH or Enduro bike, so you get better grip with less tread. If you ride a 63 deg HA DH bike, then by all means do go half Mary. It would be the least of your problems on the K2C :-)

Ok cool thanks everyone.

so since we got permission to continue the derailment ;),

I share thermo's apprehension of running Maxxis tires. I've only ever cut a tyre bead when running maxxis tyres. I mean, htf do you cut the bead while riding? I've broken rims shod with Mary's, but no tyre damage. Could be rotten luck, but it was enough to put me off Maxxis.

tried E13s, rev 1, and omg, that drag. uurgh ( i see Rev 3 has recently been released).

recently shifted to Michelins. Jury still out, but so far, pretty good (comparable to the Mary) when it's dry. but grip in the wet is suspect. wet sandstone seems as slippy as wet soap.

That new Tioga front specific tyre is very appealing.

hahaha classic.

I have only ever wrecked 1 tire, and it was riding up the stairs in the company gardens.

I double snake bit the bead when my back wheel hit the bottom step.

Otherwise, with years and tens of thousands of miles in my legs, I have only ever changed worn out or bad tires.

Am I really that slow?

Nope, I just ride like poo, and I'm heavy, and I've split tyres because of that. Super Gravity and Double Down only for me, now, even at the front. But I know that for the majority of people, an SG or DD out front is overkill.

Everyone knows that an Ardent out front and an Ardent Race out back is the best tire combo ever.... No idea what you guys are all on about.

But seriously, those WTB trail Boss tires are good all rounders.

I have never run Magic Mary's... I am obviously stingy and those soft compound grippy tires wear out way too quickly.

If I'm not going to get at least 20000km out of a set of tires I'm going to think thrice......

Same sentiments with maxxis, gave various ones a go, got rid of all of them. Tried some kendas and Schwalbe then settled with Continental Dekaiser Projekts, my all time favourite tyre. Pity they not made in a 2.5. I was running the conti on my then Dual sus when I got a hardtail and bought the Trailboss front and back. Those small blocks are very deceiving, but they have performed at tokai, jonkers, eden, and hoogies. In the looser sandy bits they are ok but thats expected because of the small shallow knobs.

Then for further deraillment I have paired my trailboss on my current hardtail with the WTB Convict, still dunno what to make of it, but it grips

  I was honestly gonna buy one but there are no BD casings coming here. And as above, I now only buy proper casings. And so, Mary out back and assguy up front. Prob gonna go DHR2 out back when the mary expires.

Looool I have been telling him this since I started running the Elim late last year already.

yup.
