That Jet Blast Story must be incredible to witness. Amazing the forces.

Top Gear filmed a panel van driving behind a 747 and into the jet blast.

Not much of the trokkie remained

Just to reiterate: Cyclists don't break the rules, people do.

When a cycle road race has 5 to 10 people riding into oncoming traffic to pass the bunch, while at the same time there are 100s of people NOT doing that, does that make all those cyclists law breakers, or those 5 to 10 people the law breakers?

At what stage can we generalize about the actions of a given group?

-Once more than 5% of the group does the given transgression?

-51%?

-80%?

-100%?

OHS compliance in construction is a mine field. The contractor has to put in a lot of effort to keep people safe. And if something like this happens he must put in even more effort to proof to the authorities that he did everything he was supposed to as per the act to prevent the incident from happening, and that it was not his fault. Sites can be shut down for longer than a day especially if somebody gets hurt.

A site like this can have P&G costs of more than R250,000 each day. This cost keeps on ticking when the site is stopped. And if the contractor is not at fault he will recover those costs.

Bottom line: this 'little' trespassing could become a very expensive exercise for this rider.

I found this article quite rich, "The situation results in a minority group exposing the entire community to project delays and cost claims by the contractor"

Trespassing is one thing, but to go on and play the high horse card about cyclists causing project delays and wasted time and money in SA is laughable.

I mean it's not like we ever consider the impact of the shutdown around Houtbay or 1000 other places when hooligans swarm the streets and bring an entire community to a grinding halt?

I have more than 30 years experience of guiding cycle tours . Road and Mtb . And have noticed multiple times that as soon as a butt touches a saddle some short circuit to the brain occurs . I have been amazed how people who are highly successful professionals and businessmen stop thinking when they get on a bicycle .

:D My theory is that in some people, they actually sit on their brains........impairing blood flow and function......

Problem is public perception is fact and no amount of rational argument is going to change that. The only thing left is for us as cyclists is to ostracize those that transgress. We seem to be doing that in this thread but just try this on a road safety thread about cyclists behaviour in general (not just roadies) :whistling:

I think you or your friend should back that statement up with some facts, then.

According to the article, he was found in a construction zone which was marked as such and off limits to the public.

Unless this is all a lie, I don't think the general public has much of a choice but to agree that he was wrong.

Hope your friend heals up quick, though, and that this has been a lesson to him and that he won't do it again.

Maybe his story is he lined up a "dam gap" and just landed short and therefore into the construction site, he was totally going to clear the 75m gap but just fell short.

Yep, the pun lies in the fact that the transgression happened at a site where they were actually constructing a dam....

Yeah, I enjoyed the pun! it just conjured up some funny images in my head :-)

What he said and what they said is to different stories.  I'm not going to say what he said as I don't have the facts, I was not there when the incident occurred.

Maybe he is lying, maybe the article is lying.  I don't know.

Does he agree that he was in the construction site? Surely that would be the key fact?

Is he on LeHub? We would love to hear his version from him directly. If he is so sure of his facts then surely it won't hurt his case to come tell us?

That he did not say, but what he said is that the ambulance had to drive into or through the construction site.

Most people drawing salaries have zero concept of business finances and its implications of delays etc.

Hope they go after this chop for the losses incurred.
