Lets look at some races from a cost/km point of view:

Bekker Bundu Bash  65km = R2.15 per km

JHB Safest Race 95km = R2.57

Crater Cruise 65km = R2.32

Crater Cruise 101km = R1.45

cheap cheap... you lucky freakin cyclists Ironman 8.85/km' date=' Energade tri - R4 /kmDeadDeadDead But, I'll rather do 10 IMs than one 94.7!Big%20smile

Been checking some inflation prices recently. It seems to be that stuff generally doubles in price every 10 years. And as a result, it is about x4 over 20 years.

Can of Coke in 2000 was on special for R2.00

Right now I see the same can with a RRP of R9.00

So x4.5 over 19 years.

Interestingly, vehicle prices didn't go up that crazy:

VW Polo,1.6, comfortline, 2005 = R145 000

Today = R287 000

So x2 over 14 years, not bad.

This thread started at R245 for a 947 entry 11 years back, which from the discussions were seen as expensive back then. R550 this year(IIRC) is in the ballpark of x2, though it came from an "expensive" base so it seems this trend will continue into the future and people just keep coming back for more.

Digging out a 11 year old thread.. impressive!

Topic is still relevant and i'm assuming a lot more people have joined since then. Also excludes the usual "do a search, been discussed before" comment.

While this does have it's place in some circumstances, it can taste a bit dismissive to new members, which is a shame.

Agreed, the topic is relevant, and scary how the old price was considered expensive when you take what it costs now

The price for the short version is even more ridiculous, when taken into account that you don't even get a goody bag - no matter how cheap the goody bag has gotten.

Which is something that the inflation calcs didn't take into account - when this was started, the goody bags overflowed with real actual products, lots of them. Now, its silly little samples that are just chucked in at random. Not even any real discount vouchers anymore.

Your 94.7 entry fee doesn't pay for the goodie bag. It's contents are determined by how much free stuff sponsors feels like handing out, and for whatever reasons sponsors haven't felt like handing out tons of free stuff for many, many years now. (and most other races as well)

It does pay for the privilege to have open roads for cycling for one day in the year, to have medics available if something goes wrong etc and whatever is left goes towards charity.

I wonder in what decade are we going to be able to put the goodie bag moans behind us?

I wont be doing any the argus next year because of the prices. It is R1100 for the wife and me.

And to pay that kind of money to ride our bikes for one day is not worth it for us. If you ad your ppa money then it is just crazy

Huh? What makes you think this happens?

On the point of the race entry, it is 'expensive', but I'm happy enough to pay a premium for the road closure we get...

Jip.  Have to agree.

They should just stop with the goody bags.  It's not what we enter for.

Rather give the goodies to under privileged kids if useful.

When I entered , which was on the last day , there were  "only " 21000 entries .

Is this not about 9000 down on previous years ??

People speaking with their wallets maybe ?

Yeah, hearing someone complaining about having to only pay for the entries is hard to listen to when you have to cover the travel, accommodation and those damn wine farms tour and tasting prices
