Hey guys,

I am looking at buying a new mountain bike, will be doing some light trails and riding around the suburb.

Now here is where i need help, i am a fattie. So last bike i bought the back tire would basically be flat when i was on it.

I am 1.83m and 125kg, so must a look at Fatboy bikes or are there other alternatives ?

Just want to ride to get into better shape.

Hi Stew

I would Not look at a FatBike... They are heavy and the wide tyres cause a lot of rolling resistance.

What is your Budget?

and where do you plan on riding? Spruit, Modderfontein, Northern Farms?

Best place to start. What is your budget?

Hi there.

Any weight person can ride any bike, you just need to adjust your tyre pressure to suit and keep within the bike's recommended max weight limit for safety reasons. If you're just starting out though I doubt you'll be doing a lot of bike-breaking riding (jumps, drops etc.), so don't be too stressed about it.

You definitely don't need to ride a fatbike. The purpose of a fatbike is to be able to ride over very soft and loose terrain (sand, snow etc.) where you need a large surface area in contact with the ground to not sink in. It has no special weight bearing properties.

With regards to what bike, in Gauteng a good entry level hardtail (i.e. no back suspension) from a reputable brand will serve you well. Look at a Scott Aspect, Titan Rogue, Silverback Sola or similar as as a starting point.

No just for the bike alone

That helps a little.

I would look at something like the Titan Rogue Sport.

Alternative is to phone a couple of shops and see if they have any old stock they are clearing. Last year’s model often attracts some healthy discounts.

No to fat bikes...I think a fat bike is a luxury, not needed in anyone's fleet and definitely not as your only bike.

Perhaps a Plus Bike?

I would go for a used bike if I were you, you can get a pretty decent one for R10K.  Once you get familiar with the whole thing, your next buy would be that much easier and you will know a lot better what you like, don't like and what work for you.

Every person's preference on bikes are different and the amount of options on each and every part of a bike is mind boggling.  You can take almost any part, value ranging between a few bucks to thousands.

Were is my childhood days were the only options were Raleigh & Peugeot ....   :D.

Get a used bike, and get going as a start.

I am 1.90 m tall and last weigh in I was 118kg, but I've topped 124 before, and my hardtail and full-suspension both do well with me on the saddle. I ride my tires at around 2.0 bar on tar, 1.6 - 1.8 on trails. No problem. I do find that I tend to go through freebody hubs more often on my HT, but other than that I can even hit some moderate jump lines on my full-sus and after 3 years it has not failed me yet.

You'll be fine.

Thanks for all the advice guys,

Found these 3 that i like so far, will just confirm before i buy if the tires will be able to handle the pressure to handle my weight.

Hi Stew, i am a bit of a Silverback fan. You tend to get more bang for your buck. I know you said your budget was 10k, but if you can up it a tad, you get a much better bike. 1 times gearing in front, this is nice to start off with. Lighter frames. Maybe you can find one of these second hand or demo.

Also, these silverbacks below will be in my opinion comfortable as they are slightly trail focused so your riding position will be less jet fighter aimed. Maybe try and find 2019 models of the below. Rather get newer gear technology from the start i would say.

At your height, you will need to purchase a Large size frame. Bikes are about your height and generally not about your weight.

I was 116kg not too long ago and my tires at 220 (32psi) handled my weight just fine. It's not a weight issue or tire issue. I think your tires were never inflated correctly.

Have to agree with this, if it were me, I would hands down go for the Slade Comp, I was in a similar boat to you last year, I bought a cheaper bike, 2 weeks later I went and got a Silverback Stride SX as there were no Slade Comps available, if you can stretch the budget, I dont think you will regret it
