I'm reading that a new Hippo has wandered into NF and is currently basking in one of the dams!

I remember the last hippo there, about 6 years ago. Managed to catch sight of him a few times, usually in Fish Eagle Dam, and have some pics somewhere of him yawning. Very impressive.

Hope he stays a while but doesn't cause too much damage . . . .

What happened to last hippo?

The last one just wandered off in the end as far as I know. There was another one at a different bike park that was killed so that people could swim in a dam if I remember, but that wasn't NF.

I paddle the nearby Crocodile river quite often and after my body went pear shaped thanks to COVID I really don't need the competition from a hippo.

They can travel vast distances at night and in the morning hey presto you have a new hippo in you garden pond.

We used to paddle in the Marble Hall area and the rivers on the farms are loaded with flat dogs and hippo.Somewhere on here or maybe FB is a graphic of the rivers of Southern Africa and these animals will follow them.

Hippos pretty much stay in the water during the day anyway – or sleep on the riverbank. It's at night that they are usually a menace on foot paths et cetera.

Yah we had one arrive in our tiny farm dam a few weeks back. we tracked it back down to the river in the valley below (14km and 500m in altitude distant) - which is quite a climb for a hippo. 2 days later it was gone again - heading in the direction of Dullstrooom.

Those trout okes better watch out..

He ended up in cradle moons dam. Not sure what it was called before cradle moon but thats where he was. I never actually saw the hippo but saw his poef on hippo hill often. Glad they have one again.

Heia safari.

The adjacent property was repossessed by the bank an they they were not taking care of the animals. Heia requested that they relocate the animal which they refused to do. Iirc it was culled.
