Guys need to wise up about DSTV.

1 premium subscription shared between 5 people, 4 smart TV's and 1 x decoder viewer.

At R200 a month its worth it.

If you do that, have Netflix and GCN+ you have enough rubbish to binge watch when you're sick and enough sport to keep you occupied for more than long enough for less than R500 a month.

HAHAHAHA

Whoopi Goldberg is worth every cent!

I have it to watch cricket and the footy. I love cricket and I really enjoy watching the kickball.

I think my wife watches Master Chef and other chef shows when applicable.

The actual TV part of it is lost on me.

there must be a team of actuaries running the numbers on people using multiple logins.

Plenty of people piggyback off an already existing premium account, and DSTV don't seem too bothered by it (publicly at least). i see this happening way more than consortiums forming to split the costs.

Even the doyen of SA Cycling, Mighty Mouse, was unaware of this sudden change in cycling coverage.

seriously - Steve Shapiro is that guy!!!!

but that is pretty funny, considering i assume he is on their payroll and probably has insight/feed in for scheduling.

I don’t really care about DStv, but don’t they limit it to two devices watching live TV at the same time? It was when I had access to a app login.

Besides Netflix, I have a Hulu subscription ($1.99/month) that has more studios available than the DStv premium bundle, eg. Fox, ABC, History, Discovery, NatGeo, etc. Sure, I don’t get sport channels, Kyk(f0kk3n)Net and MNet, but it doesn’t matter - if I want to watch rugby, I go to a mates’ place for drinks and watch there.

Netflix R140

Hulu $1.99

VPN $84 (prepaid for 27 months)

GCN+ R360 (prepaid for 12 months)

That all works out to about R305 per month, and is more than enough.

All this is fine if you have enough data. A lot of people don't have packages with enough data so you need to add that to the calculations.

And it can get quite expensive depending on what is available in your area.

Yeah starts from about R800(well it did when the fools were digging up our pavements and hitting water lines everyday about 3/4 years back) in my suburb and the whatsapp group doesn't go a week without people complaining the fibre is down.

I believe we also not getting strade bianchi but getting paris nice if my EPG is correct.

My Dad contacted DSTV and they told him it was rights restrictions.

We pay that and it isn't even fibre because we don't have fibre in my particular street yet. And there is only 1 fibre company in the area and without competition they are really expensive...

So yeah when you start adding up, things can become expensive. So for now I will hold back on GCN until they have sorted out all of their bugs and I know that I will get what I pay for and not just a bit of what I pay for and I would only use it to watch races..Once it is all running smooth I may sign up.

Fair enough. Add R649 to my monthly bill for uncapped.

The wife needs it to work, so comes out of her business expenses.

I don't use any data, so deduct a cell phone contract data plan from that price to make it a little more appealing.

JIP !!

My old ADSL line actually works VERY nicely, at under R200 per month.  In fact, since most of the neighbours switched to fibre, ADSL seems to be better in our area.

AND .... during load shedding the fibre likes to drop .... ADSL stays on, and with my UPS system I can carry on irrespective of eksdom.

Netflix .... share the premium package with 5 people .... BUT, as nice as it is, there is a wide range of stuff you cant see.

Showmax .... there must be a law against DStv taking our subscription and then taking more money so you can watch the same stuff via Showmax .... and then taking the mickey out of it all, now the new stuff is only on Showmax, then later Premium .....

Redbull tv .... LOVE it .... but then you get to the point where the actual stuff you want to watch is Geo-locked ..... no, I am no tech-boffin, and dont want to play about with VPN ....

GCN+ .... by the sounds of it, same issue as RedBull where just enough of the really good stuff is Geo-locked .....  OKAY, it is inevitable when different companies bid for the same broadcasting rights .... all it means is that either to make a call on what you are going to miss .... OR, you end up with:

- fibre

- Netflix

- Showmax

- DStv Premium

- GCN+

- Amazon

- .... the list just carries on ... even youtube now wants money to stop spamming with adds ....

HOWEVER, these are most interesting times.  Some of us grew up with ONE channel to watch .... Dinsdag aand kyk jy Dallas of jy gaan slaap vroeg, that was it, no other choices ....  Now the spectrum is shattered into too many bits, and it will take some time for a new normal to emerge ..... Heaven forbid the likes of Google decides to take over this sector of our lives as well ....

I also switched to the Prepaid Cellphone solution, which made allot of sense even before WFH was a thing where you use the Wifi data. DUAL sim phone. Data with Rain at R50 per gig, only for the data you use. I rarely call people, and when I do, I check the Vodacom app which usually has things like 10mins to Call "now" for R2 or something silly. Vodacom is then backup data for areas where Rain coverage is dodge.

Cellphone contracts are right up there with DSTV in terms of robbing people in broad daylight due to lack of competition.

Look, Prepaid people can also get fleeced, but I can decide how much is in there each month for them to take from me. :)

(The Fibre I now use to WFH means my spend on that is a non negotiable. The savings on transport is way above the R597pm.)

I will admit that lockdown had me take a second look at a couple of things ..... including the cell contract.  Working from home, and then making even more calls than usual the cell contract ran out QUICKLY in April ....

Very quickly switched to data calls - using the phone's data.  As long as both people have a decent data connection, the call is actually good quality.  The issues start when one party is linked to a poor wifi signal .....  Even then, you very quickly pick which of your contacts are geared for this.  Save the minutes for those that cant link properly for a data call.

In fact ... even now, some clients and consultants use WhatsApp to arrange a TeamsCall  (not a meeting, just a phone call via Teams ... okay, it is just semantics)  With most people now geared for Teams the sound quality is good.  And in our industry it helps if you can share your screen and resolve design questions during the discussion.

Phones and contracts .... I have 11 months to decide the way forward on this .... for now, more data, less minutes ....
