Specialised or Scott

Hi all,

 

So my brother in law is in the market to upgrade from his hardtail and he pretty much narrowed it down to these two models.

 

I said I will also get some opinions on the 2 options. 

 

Weekend rider, trail and fun. Nothing serious.

Tough call, but I would have to go with the Scott... slightly better components, and then still some change left over for your brother-in law to take your sister out for dinner

I would go with the Stumpjumper, simply because that’s what I ride.

Both good brands/bikes.

We were debating on our ride yesterday and general consensus was that best value reputable brand would be Scott or Giant.

Sho, what have the world come to? R42k for a bike with SX and some entry level fork, then on both you get either Tektro or the lowest Shimano brakes on the market. My prediction: your brother in law are going to look to upgrade parts on either of these bikes shortly after purchasing it.

Hi Wayne.

An even better bet (with way better "returns"), would be to spend the R40-45k on a 1-2 year old bike...

For that money he would find something with XT/X01 components, carbon frame, and decent shocks

Take a few days/week to look around the classifieds section, a decent bike/size will come up, it always does. I am riding a really nice 1 year old bike that I purchased on bikehub, for a fraction of the new price I would have paid

I think as for the Scott or Specialised he ended up with those options based on the looks of the bike. 

 

As for components and value for money, that is where my post on Bikehub comes in, to get some guidance as to worth it or not. 

 

Will also look at the 2nd hand option, only concern is both of us are no expert so would not know what to look out for on a 2nd hand bike to make sure something is not dodge or damaged.

I've got the Stumpjumper and my wife's got the Spark. We both love our bikes. Each has their own slight differences over the other but are both very capable bikes. You cant really go wrong with either of them. Try and test ride each of them, even if it's just around the car park. One will just "feel" right, that's the one to go for. My 2 cents worth.

Buying a 2nd hand bike can be scary, but when buying a 1-2 year old bike you have a relative amount of safety...

 

Buy from a reputable seller on bikehub, and ask about the bike history and services. Generally speaking, you are low-risk when buying a 1-2 year old bike, and even more so when buying through a 2nd hand bike dealer/trader who offers a guarantee.
