There is a much more comprehensive thread on this topic with lots of good advice. The thread is rather large though and much of the good advice could be lost in the ton of posts. Give it a look.

Insurance is rather complicated and what's good for one person is not necessarily good for another.

I prefer to stay away from these direct marketing type of insurers. Those that phone you up and promise you the earth and still offer you reduced premiums. There is a reason they are cheap.

As mentioned many times, I want to work through a broker who only work through your old, mainstream, established companies like Santam.

Do give more insight

Poor communication on the whole, I had to constantly apply pressure.
They were more interested in reducing their pay out.
Asked a ton of questions about previous insurance, basically did their underwriting when I wanted to claim.

Overall experience left a lot to be desired.

Ohok, guess luck of the draw.

I had my claim dealt with very efficiently as they immediately directed the claim to "riders@work" believe they independent run or specialist dept and my claim was approved within 5 days. And literally got a daily update.

Riders at work, yeah also dealt with them... Less than satisfactory experience there as well.

Had the nerve to tell me some damage to my bicycle was "wear and tear and purely cosmetic".

The damage was clearly due to the incident

Thank you very much for all the replies.

My previous bike was insured along with the rest.

I really struggled to get them to pay me out.

I would now like to use a independent company just to cover my bike.

Guess naked insurance then?

Thank you all 😁

I added my bike on to my King Price insurance, and  I had to claim after having the bike insured for about a year. The claim was paid out and settled in 8 days. I am super happy with King Price bike insurance.

Good to know, thanks. Also with them and was wondering if they any good on bike insurance.

AS an added note: Just did a claim for my wife's prescription glasses. No hassle, no issued, done. Again they were specified.

Does Discovery insure bikes?

Outsurance kept me on the phone for half an hour asking one million unintelligible questions and then came up with a monthly premium for insurance while in the premises and an out-and-about insurance of R1400pm [on R165000 value for 2 bikes]...also kept insisting on my bank acc. details to start policy immediately.

Looking at Naked too...seems ok and fairly simple to use, not sure if it will insure bikes on a locked roof rack...390pm on R165000 value , 1000 excess

I have just returned form a 10yr stint overseas so I have no previous insurance company to fall back on since I was not insured for anything in SA after 2011...

They do. I had a friend have a R400k bicycle claim and after not too long he was paid out. And another had an accident recently and they paid him 3 days after receiving the valuation from Cyclelab. Our bikes are insured with Discovery also. And the the extra cost isn’t tremendously high.

I would recommend using a broker with an established company. Might cost a little bit more but just makes the claim process that much easier.. specify the bike.

nope, Discovery will only insure bikes under household insurance, not as single items…

looks like Naked is the best option

Untrue. Herewith mine which shows as specified portable possessions.

I spoke to Discovery on the phone and he unequivocally said that unless I take out house insurance they do not insure single items like bikes...
