@ChrisF now very confused.

60miler started at 8am, malgas was after 47km.

So to get stuck at the broken pont after 1pm you would have been going snail pace already.

There is no bridge over the Breede between the N2 and the mouth, so you can't ride around the pont in 50km, (without a boat/getting feet wet).

something doesn't add up, but i guess facts always get in the way of good stories.

Okayyyy ... had a nice chat now.  Got the story sorted ... makes a lot more sense now.

They did the 100 miler (not the 60, my fault).

They turned back to Swellendam after waiting at the pont.

They did not cross the river at any other point.

Can only smile at the map vs the first feedback ... 🤣

I was just about to make this post, Chirsto circled in Red entered the 100miler at +-3pm back tracked on the 60miler route to where the route splits for 60/100 then did what seems a more direct road back to Swellendam as he ended off on 146kms.

now that is more logical!

so instead of doing 160km they did a 146km route, huge drama. thought they might have had some sneaky crossing, i know there's a few rapids at places like up the creek/round the bend where techincally you could get over at low water

fyi they did actually cross the breede twice, on the N2!

I am still fishing the mud out of my ears.

a few of us went to the local hospital immediately before leaving Swellendam, just down the road from the venue actually and had our eyes flushed out with saline by a nurse/doctor & then had some ointment applied. I think everything was out by the next day & redness is beginning to fade away now.

I wonder how the guy I saw go otb and crack a collarbone or shoulder is doing... Was that steep descent with a puddle at the bottom that had a line right of it, he smacked straight into a telephone pole.

This sort of race. I ride with R20 safety goggles from builders, bottle of water and a buff on your wrist and you can keep clearing your vision .

worse part is I had sunglasses tucked in on the back of my helmet but never used them since it would've just got all muddy anyway, I regret that decision now.

Got to be Neville, I don't know the detail but he seems to be all ok. Was responding to Strava messages on Saturday or Sunday already.

Sent my bike for a (much needed) full service after Saturday's mudfest.

They just sent me this pic of my BB 🙈

image.png.a90291aef85f9b29dafb3819ee6c85c1.png

😵 took my bike apart yesterday and havent cleaned it yet, but my BB is perfect and smooth as silk lol. Spun the cranks with the mud still on there and not a hint of grit and it spins for days. WheelsMFG - the best.

what crank interface is that though? The amount of dirt that got in there is shocking??

There was almost no mud on my BB seals and literally nothing between the spines of my shimano crank. The whole setup did a good job keeping most of it out. I do lube with marine grease on the splines and under the bb seals before i put everything back together. Nothing came in.

ps: and i let them pressure wash my bike afterwards.

I kept mine on despite poor visibility. Everytime it rained they got cleaned so it was sort of fine.

Didn't fancy a trip to the ER to have my ears and eyes flushed. I wore a buff on my head too.

My cycling kit has been soaking for 4 days. I think I've used a about 4 bath loads of water just to get the mud out. Now its wasmashien tyd
