Van Vleuten.... simply amazing. I think she did a great job of keeping her powder dry in the terrible conditions, then attacks off the back! That was something special, and a properly-deserved win, I'd say. After her nasty-looking fall, a fractured elbow to pull out a performance like that, and it means she's in the rainbow in her last season. simply magic

I was rooting for Ash, but in that company, it wasn't likely, but man, she showed how good she is. Pure class

I think tomorrow's race is going to be a banger for the ages. The course looks to be just right for stunning racing. How will the men's race turn out? I'll be getting up a bit earlier than I did today, that's for sure

AvV!!!!

what a move for the 🏆

As the two groups merged, she was floating at the back, and then delivered that flyer, deploying her time trialling strength and applying tactical mastery.
39 years of age. What a racer. I think she is retiring from the sport next year. Imagine retiring with the rainbow jersey.

Pretty sure Hayley Preen was in there for at least 100km… got dropped because she got caught up behind a crash in the feed zone on a climb. Hayley is super strong, has been getting some experience racing over in Europe and the UK this season.

She was dropped on Mt Keira (Ladies rode this at 4.3wkg / 19:30min / 1230VAM) and came back with some other ladies after a solid chase and was mostly at the back of the peloton. Yes, she was at the back when the crash happened with many others who easily rode back to the group. The girl who crashed rode back there was no panic there.

My point was more that I don’t think it’s fair to say she is an “utter embarrassment” and “not fit to represent at worlds”. I would also expect that a lot of advancing in international racing is also helped by experience, which you only get by attending. But, that is also just my personal opinion.

I didn’t say or think she was; I just added info as reference. Last year she was 9.5min down, this year 15min down on the winner.

I agree and have always said you need experience but that to me is not world championships. Go race elsewhere, see how you go, get that experience but don’t use worlds for that. This is not directed at Hayley, this is just in general for any athlete.

Fair, can’t argue with the logic here. Was more aimed at the original comment(s) from Stringbean in this case, just thought they were a bit harsh. But again, personal opinion 😝

What a kick at the finale...

Is sock length not a restriction anymore or are you allowed to wear rugby socks? 🤭

MvdP has abandoned the race, after teenage girls played "tok-tokkie" on his hotel room door and him losing his cool, got himself arrested.

EDIT:see the link from Thomo above for details
