“From a crazy idea in an adventurous young man’s mind to the world’s most prestigious mountain bike stage race, the Absa Cape Epic celebrates its 20thedition this month. We tracked down the man that founded the race, Kevin Vermaak, and asked him a few burning questions about the race’s past – and its future…...”

Get the distinct impression that the parting with Ironman was not a happy one

Great story. As much as I was one of those moaning about the cost and commercialisation of the Epic at the time, KV kickstarted an industry. Not mentioned here, but I know the IDC took on funding commitments before ABSA came in and it could wash it's own face - incredible investment if you think what the event has given back to RSA inc.

Very interesting to see where he goes next. Maybe reading too much into it but the door for him to setup a rival series with staff he trusts seems open.

I remember KV sitting at his table at the 2003? RIDE Expo in the Dome. He even tried to convince me to enter the 2004 event. I told him that Joe Averages like me could never attempt such an outrageous event.

History has proved me wrong as thousands have.

I first heard about it at the 2004 cycle tour expo. I wanted to sign up there and then but they were adamant the race register was full. I entered the 2005 edition the minute entries opened. I was number 94.

even back then okes were moaning about the cost and dr evil

They’re officially a SRAM sponsored team so no CS OSPW will be fitted, even if CS had one that is compatible with the hydraulic clutch

Rider tents a vast improvement over previous years. Significantly larger and made with proper weather proofed rip stop canvas, shade net liners for doors/windows and a sponsor branded sun cover.

That does look proper. Looks like a semi luxury version.

20 years later and tents finally get a makeover 😅🤘
