Hi all, the petition is up -- please sign and share widely:

*SIGN OUR PETITION FOR SAFE CYCLING LANES*

The Woodstock Residents’ Association has started this petition due to the recent process of resurfacing the tarmac on Albert Rd. It turns out the City is not upgrading the cycle lane as we originally thought, but downgrading it -- *more parking* is being introduced and the *painted cycle lane is being narrowed to 1m or less* -- which is strictly against NMT guidelines for a road like Albert (needs to be 1.5m wide).

Plus the City has not engaged with the public around despite the big and dangerous changes made to the cycling lane going outbound. We just had a big NMT proposal for Woodstock open for comment which didn't mention the Albert Road changes at all!

Please share and engage others. We will email this petition to the city!

*We can still overturn this!*

This in the week where that young rider killed by being doored in Seapoint. These jokers talk about NMT but time and time again actions belie their k@kpraat.

Signed.

@Mamil not sure if this petiiton is linked to you or you're just reposting (and I know it might be impactful) but maybe remove the image of Calib out of respect.

I'm just reposting what was circulated to me. Not in charge of text of petition or any images

Rode thru there today - ride slow and bring a bell folks - car guards and the market are the problem, not the painted road. (The new tar is great to ride on!)

I've been through there several times since the resurfacing. The funny thing is that although it is still the wild west, not having any lines has not made it any worse, which tells us that the original painted bike lane was about as useful as the letter "g" in the word phlegm.  Class 3 and 4 bikelanes are not NMT infrastructure, just free parking for cars.  Narrowing the painted lanes will make it worse though.

I have signed the petition but is it realistic to create a cycle lane on that stretch of road that anybody will take any notice of?

Good question. If it is not separated with a substantial barrier, I would say no. Looking at Octotel in particular, who believe that the bike lane was provided as free parking for their fleet.

I have given up on that stretch of road, sadly.

..........It is my personal little cyclists nightmare filled with reckless, homicidal, stupid, unqualified drivers, Ubers, muggers and pedestrians, all trying their level best to kill me while they try to find parking to go buy a mundane gluten free vegan muffin at the Old Biscuit Mill.........and if I survive them, I know I can look forward to the next death trap horror..........Salt River Circle..........the purest form of traffic chaos and ineptitude, situational blindness, trucks, taxis and idiocy on earth..........and then I hear the alarm clock scream and I am so grateful that it is 5.30am, dark, cold and wet outside, but that I am alive and can go to work rather than the morgue.......

I signed anyway, who knows, perhaps some day the City will do the right thing and build a dedicated separate cycle lane through there. It is the only safe way and NOT rocket science!

Edit: You noticed the hyperbole above, didn't you?

No it isn't but politically it's important to win the fight I think. Also, I'd rather have the lane there than not have it even if only half of drivers respect it.

Ok this old fart thinks he signed it.🤣  had 3 steps sign 5 more petitions to complete and keep the momentum going. Did I need to sign the others? I did get email.

The bike lane could be behind the parked cars, separated by bollards for instance. That road is 18m wide, plenty of space to build respectable NMT infrastruture while accommodating motorised traffic
