having the route was indeed great, I actually missed one turn - was probably lost in my thoughts at the time as I was on my own - the garmin then prompted me to turn around.

Great event, will be back! The route was well marked, but the arrow boards were pretty small, so easy to miss when your eyeballs are bouncing around in their sockets.

Big red arrows on white boards would be easier to spot (like some other events).

I love having the gpx on my head unit.

Sorry to have missed this ride - love those roads - so many rides, so little time

Was a lekker ride, not a tough route pace was brutal if you tried to hang on with the sharp end of the field. 🥵 Haven't suffered this much in a long time

Think there is another one nearby in August (and of cause Ronde van Riebeek in May!)

Just a random comment - noticed quite a few people missed turn-offs and some got completely lost on-route Saturday.

Must admit I was never a fan of people requesting gpx files of the route from race organisers, thought it was overkill. But rode with the route on my garmin and it takes a lot of stress off you if you don't have to worry about missing a sign & turn-off and landing on the wrong road.

I honestly don't know why each organiser don't just publish the GPX files. I like information that you can get on the fly from Garmin such as distance and ascent remaining. It certainly beats trying to get some poor volunteer at the last water point to try and give you accurate information.

I know sometimes landowners are sensitive about people plotting GPX files across their property (yes I know once the race has gone over it, the routes would be publicly available anyway from Strava), but thats the type of hoops organisers sometimes have to jump through to get access...

That, and land owners changing routes days before the event.  If gpx files are shared early, this cause huge issues when riders goes off trail to ride what they think is the trail .... exactly where the farmer dont want them on that day.

I am yet to meet a land owner who is against people staying on the marked route on the day. This argument may have washed 10 years ago, but these days we have so many options in terms of trail access that feeling the need to trespass should be moot.

It's a simple announcement that there are say 3 deviations from the planned route with the pre race briefing. Put extra markers and marshals at these deviations on the day to guide riders accordingly. These deviations are mostly small detours or shortcuts. I can count om my one hand when routes required wholesale changes on short notice. These are usually weather induced and then it usually means a shorter than advertised route.

Not quite following your reasoning here. But the issue is usually people trespassing before & after the race to ride the same route they have access to on raceday. Not much an organisor can do about that other than asking participants nicely, and then not giving gpx files help avoid people doing route recces before the race. A small gesture but it got us over the line with some difficult owners at the local Durbanville race.

You might think people have enough access to trails not to have the need to trespass, but it is quite common to have entitled cyclists trespassing on farms with no trails or access and then verbally abusing farmers when confronted.

Ahhh, the "entitlement" issue again ......................... or should I say "still" rather than "again".

Many years ago MTB'ers would ride the Bottelary Hills routes to scout the accessibility of such routes, then come tear up the farmers' vineyard irrigation systems and other infrastructure with their dirt bikes. This resulted in a few altercations with landowners where innocent weekend warriors had to sweet talk themselves out of tight spots while staring into the round "eyes" of a shotgun.

These incidents arguably never ends well for the broader considerate MTB fraternity. While we are so blessed with thousands of km's private roads and trails, some riders still regard it their birth rite to trespass at will.

A word to the wise about Garmin saying you off course and should it reroute... NEVER say yes to that question!!

Rather figure out how to get back on the purple line.

True story!!!
