What does first ownership have to do with it? I also had a bit of run around with Naked a while ago when my bike was stolen, despite me posting all pics of bike on the app I had to prove ownership to the assessor, despite the also being video footage and of the left-what a joke , left a bitter taste in the mouth. Bike was actually recovered with some damage which they then repaired /replaced parts

but I’m now weary

I'm currently in a process with Santam myself, I must say this is quite frustrating, contacted them last thursday with a damage report from specialized, friday the expert calls me to get my version of what happened. Then Monday asks me for the original invoice to prove I'm the first owner, then today asks if I agree for the frame to be sent to them for inspection by the carbon expert (like I have a choice ?), not sure what he's going to be asking for tomorrow or the day after.

Tbh, I think after this it's the end for me insurances for stuff that I can afford replacing if they break or disappear, it's like the casinos, they always win. In the last 5 years I'm pretty sure I covered why I'm asking them to pay out now, or at least the amount if I were to replace through Spez crash replacement policy.

I assume the expert is RidersatWork...I also had them give me a bunch of questions. A bit frustrating yes

Yes ridersatwork.

For the proof of ownership I must say I only thought about it while writing this post, but I have paid premium before for 2nd hand bikes, that they asked me for valuation certificates before, so I’m not sure what being the first owner has to do with anything. I’ve only got two bikes left on my contract now as I don’t want to pay a premium for my old mountainbike anymore, both purchased new from specialized so it’s not really a concern anymore, but after reading this thread i’m now concerned that they ask for the frame to be repaired by cbr (which is absolutely out of question for a broken top tube on a sworks crux that weight 950g, i’ll never trust this frame anymore after a repair)

I had my brand new Jimny with them. The car was hit in the street and the sump was somehow damaged and the oil drained out. They were informed of all of this on the claim. The engine was not started by me. They took the car. Gave it to some shady panel beaters in CT. They fixed the outside damage and they started the engine. Needles to say they destroy it. So it went to suzuki. After 3 months of them wasting my time and many many phone calls and emails they paid me out. They are absolutely terrible. I had to go to the Ombudsman. Both of those companies in my opinion are absolutely terrible. I am now back with outsurance. And happy so far.

Go to the ombudsman. It is a pain but I do believe they can be of assistance. Do not accept what you feel is not fair. As I said I did. Once you show them you are not prepared to settle for anything less than fair. Keep us posted.

I don't think the Ombud is going to help the OP as he was underinsured and didn't suffer a total loss. It's different to car insurance. Anyway, I hope he gets something out but I can understand the insurers perspective on this one. The client essentially paid lower premiums on a lower insured value, but expects his full loss covered.

Insurance falls under one cover. Doesn't matter the product as far as I understand. If you feel you are not getting fair value then it is worth a shot. At worst they can tell you to go away 😂

From the above.. it seems I won’t be getting Naked, rather keep my clothes on and use an umbrella! See what I did there< 🤓🙃

😄

Not sure why they thought that was a good name for an insurer...  Like an insurer calling themselves 'Exposed' or 'Uncovered'... Or maybe they were going for the irony - Like when you meet a 7 foot tall, built like a brick chap who goes by the name 'Tiny'?

That said, my kids snigger each time we drive passed one of their billboards, so if a memorable brand name was what they were after i guess it worked?

I would be very cautious claiming for stuff that was not in my policy. It can easily be interpreted as a fraudulent claim and the consequences can be damning.

Why did you not just claim for the original bike and damage to the original bike/frame - the carbon wheels were not insured - that was a risk you took - surely you can not hold the insurer liable for this?

I have been with Naked for more than 3 years and have had no issues with the 2 claims I submitted. There has been some delay due to them using a 3rd party assessor which was based in CT while I am in Gauteng but at most it was a week.

I told them when I submitted the claim and asked if I should put the old wheels back which they said no and was upfront about where the wheels came from. I insured a bicycle and only specified the powermeter, pedlas and carbon bars. Never asked that wheels should be replaced with carbon wheels.

Issue I have is that I did everything as they requested and were open and honest about everything and confirmed all the steps and information. Why does it take longer than a than a month and longer than 8 working days for them to reach a decision? Do you specify a bicycle saddle, cables etc? Where does it end?

It was eacaleted to an Investigator yesterday asking where did I obtain the replacement quote and whatsapp messages. I even told them I have a eye witness.

They make me feel like a "skelm" even after they mentioned and took note of my transparency and honesty.

Many years ago I moved away from the umbrella company because of this.

I was rear ended in my car twice in the space of 3 days. I reported both incidents to them as that is what you are obligated to do.

The car was not assessed from the first accident when the second one occurred, so essentially I could have just claimed for one accident.

They then wanted to charge me excess for both accidents. After some arguments I won that fight, had the car repaired and went elsewhere.

If you prefer claims to be paid out, Santam. If you like being taken for a ride, any of the plethora of insurers that make use of the direct model where no broker is involved.

I have a broker and whenever I have any issue I send them the details, and within days the money is in my account. I don't get called. I don't get asked a bunch of questions. I don't have to prove my pedigree. nothing. I claim. I get paid. end of story.

Sorry, but this is BAD advise !

Cycling insurance is VERY different to car insurance, but this is a topic for another thread.

1. The process is ONGOING. (unless I missed a post, last I saw it was just taking very long)  No call has been made, and going to the ombudsman is not going to speed up anything.

2. From personal experience ... as soon as you "decline" their offer you are entering a long long road ... they have all the time in the world !!  It took many many months, and I barely got a few more cents out than the "70%" they initially offered.

Ombudsman comes into play when they make a call, and that call can be clearly shown to be not in line with your policy.  OR, as in your case where their repairer caused more damage.  This case is not there .... not yet.

Last comment, they dont tell you to "go away" .... YOU broke the line of communication, and initiated legal steps .... "your lawyer can talk to our lawyer" ....  DONT give them an excuse to walk away while they are still working on the claim.
