Hey everyoneΒ

What are the Gravel Bike options in SA that would accommodate 2.1 tyres or more?

The obvious is the Giant Revolt

Do bikes like the Titan Switch or Cube NuRoad take more than billed 50mm?

Thanks

Wilier Rave SLR ID2 - building one up now with 2.2 tires

Parlee Taos

You might be able to squeeze one into a ENVE MOG - i tried a 2.2 and it fit BUT i was not confident it would not rub the frame occasionally so went back to a 50mm

And for us poors? How about slapping on a mtb rigid fork that can do a nice dikwiel? Surely tis front that really matters?Β

It has crossed my mind whether there really is sufficient benefit/difference using a Gravel 'geo' frame/fork vs using a hardtail MTB frame/fork in monstercross guise?

Maybe as a weekend hacker like myself it's OK but if one is racing at the 'pointy' end there could be?

Wonder maar net ....

IMHO It is a slippery slope once one starts bolting on softy stuff actually. Does the true spirit of gravel mean a dikwiel drop handled lwb roadbike or does anything go?

Best thing about my gbike is wash'ngo, no springs to pamper etc. You see once you're through the washboard you forget the pain

Exactly my point @NotSoBigBen

If you intend racing the "manne" in gravel races, get yourself a 70k gravel racer. Horses for courses I guess.

Just finished my 29er HT monsterX gravel build. I have NO intention of racing anybody AND I can fit any size tyre I wish. To add some perspective in my case - I have ridden a gravel bike, hence I am in a position to appreciate the difference in equipment. The gravel is way too hard on my lower back. You can run 45, 47, 50c tyre pressures only so low before obvious risks surface. The gravelbikes that could accommodate bigger rubber is 1)hens teeth, and/or 2)north of 60k should you have the moolah to buy one.

Not really available locally but these come highly recommended:Β https://www.yoeleobike.com/products/altera-g21-gravel-frameset?variant=50652971794713Β and you can get a lifetime warranty, bars and wheels at the same time. Even a custom paint job if you want Β

Definitely would be my pick if I was looking for a carbon gravel bike to build up. Throw in a group set from Merlin cycles and you have a pretty high end build.

A quick browse reveals this from their specsheets:

Giant Revolt - 53mm (Depending on flip chip)
Trek Checkpoint Gen 3 - 50mm
Specialized Diverge 4 - 50mm
Curve Kevin 4 - 50mm
Titan Switch - 50mm
Cube NuRoad -Β  50mm
Litespeed Flint - 54mm with 1x drivetrain (50mm with 2x)
Santa Cruz Stigmata - 50mm
Cannondale SuperX - 48/51mm
Cervelo Aspero - 40mm

All of the above could probably be pushed a bit more.
Most of the above could probably fit a bigger tyre up frontΒ

Just for info
I have friends on Checkpoints that run 2.2 easy(maxis Aspen). On 2 checkpoints. Not sure which version but definitely not the latest version.

Once you hit 5 hours on a gravel bike, i think that’s when having more comfort is an advantage. So Β if you can complete a 100 miler in under 6 hours then maybe a gravel bike can be good for you. But for everyone else, that’s a long time to spend in a saddle with no suspension.Β

Β

If you just planning on doing 50 milers then go for it.Β
