Yeah, he's got quite a big mouth. Larger than life! 10years difference between Senna's and Schu's cars so the dif is HUGE.

Ayrton in a 89 McL and Schu in a 99 Fer. Time dif was virtually nothing.

Crow, can you remember when they had to stop using the turbo's (I think it was).   Because that made n bit of difference in the speeds of the car.

well actually the cars were very different from 1989 to 1999.

Firstly the chassis:

1989 cars all had a flat bottom and only the Mac hada proper diffuser so it generated a lot of grip. Slick tyres, quaifying rubber nogal was also allowed back then so those helped generate low lap times.

Engines were 3.5L and inthe case of Senna, a 3.5L V10 honda which was the most powerful at the time. The fuel they used was also special muti, not the prescribed fuel used in 1999. It burned a lot faster and had a higher calorific value (Heating value) than fuel used in 1999.

The front wings on the 1989 cars were lower to the ground so they worked in ground effect. In 1999 the wings were 50mm above the reference plain which was the bottom of the chassis under the side pods whic was 50mm above the centre of the tub as prescribed by the rules.

The rear wings on the 1989 were also larger thus creaed more downforce by creating a lower pressure under the car than the cars were capableof in 1999.

The fact that Schu was above to lap in a similar time to Senna is a testimony to the development of the F1 cars after the rash rule changes introduced in 1995.

The laps are in no way indicative of relative talent.

If you want to compare apples with apples then chose a race in 1991 when both the Mclaren and Benetton still had mechanical gearboxes and clutches with no active suspension.

In fact throughout their time together on the track, Schumacher and Senna were within hundredth's of a second of each other in cars that were quite technologically crude compared to the William's and Ferrari of the time.

Comparison's will always be drawn. Schumacher was the best ever but I liked Senna more. He was a passionate man, sensitive, human and was not afraid to show who he was. Schumacher was far more distant and aloof. This difference is mosty due to culture (no surprises there) but also upbringing. Senna came from a wealthy family so he always had more confidence in the world of the mega rich. Schumacher came from a middle class family and had to rely on rich people to get him where he needed to go.

Senna's death has also elevated him to near sainthood and in Brasil people still speak of him giving them their best weekends. Even their words about him are beautiful.

The same will never be spoken of Schumacher because he was way too distant for people who did not work with him or were not personal friends, to ever see the human side of him.

After the 2000 World Championship was won, he came to our office in the North West of England, held a press conference and then walked to each and every office to shake the hand of every single person in the building.

That was something Senna did as well but he was there long before I arrived. He was just as appreciative. Very different people they are.

But in the end they are the same.

If I'm not mistaken they were in Benneton and Mclarens respectively, which were the dominant cars of that time.

What do you mean they were technologically crude compared to ferrari, which did not have a competive car until after shumi came on board.

Or am i misunderstanding you here?

Monaco is a greater leveler. You can only go so fast and brake so hard. There is little opportunity to build up speed so the efficiency ofthe car's aerodynamics is of little importance. Hence yu will see a Red Bull mixingit with a Mclaren and a Ferrari or  a renault. Pure mechanical competence is all that Monaco requires.

1999's car had less mechanical grip that the car from the 1989 era. Grooved slick vs qualifiying tyres, narrower track i.e. the width of the car measured from the centre lineof the contact patch of the tyres left and right all serve to make the 1999 mechanically inferior to the 1989 car at the Monaco circuit.

On other circuits where aerodynamics are more important, the 1999 cars will be quicker due to less drag from the smaller wings, less wing in ground effect, narrower track making for lower frontal area and 10 yrs worht of aerodynamic development. And that is the point.

It could be viewed that Schumachers lap is more special due to these factors but I maintain that comparison is irrelevant because the variables are too large.

At the end of the day Schmacher and Senna will sit at the top of the Greatest F1 driver ever list in 1st and 2nd place, separated only by the emotions their names invokes in the writer.

rhalim, please stop talking out your @rse!!!! LH needs to surpass Shumi's achievements before you could ever start to put him in the same league as Tiger. Dead

Don't you think it was also a little premature for him to compare himself to Senna?????
