Use an Epic to ride the Epic

You going to loose your bike in the bike park if you go for an Epic - seems like Spez is the new Giant... Wink

Only saw one other Maverick.

A short travel dual will be best. It'll be softer on the body' date=' offer better traction through technical stuff and on descents and if you with a mid to high-end bike the weight difference will be small.

Specialized Epic (Just stay away from the top of the range own brand stuff)

Crow - interested in that comment... Have the chickens finally come home to roost? I know there was plenty of talk about whether it was wise of Spez to branch off completely on their own in the niche, specialised Tongue areas such as suspension etc... Some thought it would backfire.

Curious - is that the talk? Has it backfired?

Not stirring - simply querying...

Wot about the Volcan that AM rode, i know someone who just bought a Volcan frame and was very happy with its performance during the Epic.

Other than the rear shock he transfered most of the parts from his old frame.

XTR is obviously preferable' date=' but will XT components last?[/quote']

XTR because of weight. XT because it still looks high specs at half the price of XTR. So settle for SLX.

.

XT is more than adequate.  Seen a number of bikes with SLX.  I rode with XTR but I think its overrated as a "must have" for the Epic.

Bike for the Cape Epic...

MAke sure it fits you well.

My chouice would be the Cannondale Scalpel.

Why?

zero pivot rear suspension is ultra reliable. Not pivot bearings to get clogged with mud and dirt. the frog link does have bearisn but they are far away from the BB and therefore far away from mud.

It has 100mm of travel  at the back, 110 at the back if you take a Lefty.

Lefty is the most reliable fork I have owned. very simple maintenance and an oil change every 40-60hrs and you're sorted. Other forks require maintenance at 30 - 40hrs.

Cannondales are real world light. A complete scalpel with pedals vomes in under 11kg and thats with a mid range spec.

Cape Cycle Systems backs them up and in my voew they do an excellent job if you have a major problem.

the geomtery on the Scalpel is superb. the slacker head angle makes the bike easier to steer and control which is what you want over a multi day event. Combined with Lefty this benefit is maximised.

Anthem has quite a steep head angle.

Other bikes like the Anthem and Epic mentioned are very heavy compared to the Scalpel. Often these bikes weighs are advertised  for a one off or without oil in the shocks or without pedals. Scalpel is real world under 11kg's. Mine is 10.5Kg with tubeless tyres, Ergon grips, a Lezyne Under saddle bottle cage holder and Profile bottel cage, H.E.L braided brake hoses and an Answer Products Carbon handlebar (this is way overbuilt)

The saddle is a Fizik Arione and not a light one either.

Feel it :)

My view on this. You know what you want to spend, Go out there and buy the bike YOU LIKE.

You are not buying it only for the epic, you have train on it from July / aug as well as ride it for many years thereafter.

No use in buying something (color, design etc) that you don?t like.

Value for money ? a anthem with XT groupset.

Or go to www.bicycling.co.za and check out the different bikes in certain price ranges

I would say Mongoose Canaan Team.

Best value for money by FAAAAAAAR!  Also, great bike.  Just ensure you get the Fox RP23 shock.

Very comfy bike, with race feel to it.

my 2cents....

If you really want to spend the cash go XTR all the way, my view is that rear and front derailleurs take the second beating. First beating is cassette, crank and BB.

So stick with SLX or XT on derailleurs.

Cranks and BBs takes a hammering so SLX and XT there.

You can go XTR on shifters, brakes and maybe wheelsets.

All of this off course if money is an issue, if not go balastic and bling to the T.

As for Spaz of Giant, or anything for that matter. Try every bike and decide for yourself. Don't read reviews, or do but with pinch of salt - who will slate his own bike?

Personally - I'm deciding between upgrading 20,000km Anthem 1 or new AnthemX1
