My experiences ordering online from foreign shops has been varied. Sometimes the stuff comes in a few days with just VAT and other times seems to take forever. So check the duty rates before purchase. A lot of the Ebay gadgets from China take the longest as the invoice supplied is not to SARS specs, so you have to send them a copy of yours. Anything expensive make sure you use a "big name" shipper (UPS, DHL, FedEx) and get a tracking number. You might want to use a work address since they tend to just show up in the 9-5 slot. Not much good at your home address.

The SA bike market is very narrow, with dealers stocking the most popular items only in a lot of cases. Their prices will be competitive on those items, but often they won't even have anything as esoteric as a 25mm road tyre. Bar tape in colours is hard to find as well (and expensive). I do try and support the LBS as much as possible, but it does seem that some of them are not particularly interested in anyone who doesn't buy a new bike each season.

Ok so here goes my latest latest internet buying experience.

This is the first time i have bought from Chain Reaction and i must say i can understand why they are he biggest online store in the world.

Last week monday i ordered a handlebar and stem from CRC, after i was unable to find the length i wanted for the budget i had.

Prices were good, Variety was superb. There was another online store that was slightly cheaper on my Handlebar and stem but then they charged almost R400 for delivery whereas CRC only charged R117.

So 10 min ago i have a knock on the door and this arrives

Just a pity that i placed an order with a local online store for a pair of grips at the same time and paid for overnight del but the grips are yet to leave there premises but thats a rant for another day.

How much did you pay for import costs?

Brilliant, thank you! Looking at bringing in a stem and handlebar also and read they charge 40% but now can safely order

Schweet, glad i could be of assistance. Happy shopping.

I ordered from CRC, a Ragley saddle, for the first time 2 weeks ago today (Tuesday, 5th, night) and the package was delivered to my business on the Friday (8th) at around 3pm. Granted I opted for the £13.50 delivery option through DHL as I wanted it before the following Friday and didn't want to take chances.but still great, quick service and I paid no further duties (don't know if it applies to a saddle)

I firmly believe in supporting my lbs with as much as possible because of the amazing service I always get from them, but I wanted something they didn't have and couldn't get.

So, in a situation where my lbs can't get me something in future I'll definitely use CRC again.

Ah damn. I'm not used to paying import taxes (not from SA) and just ordered some 5-10 shoes off CRC as they were on special and limited in stock/range in SA.

Now possibly regretting it if I'm going to get slugged a tax on top of them. :(

Finally shoes arrived! Ordered on 5th Sept. Only had to pay ~20% tax in the end, so still worked out way cheaper than buying locally - just the delay with post strikes only main annoyance.
