Ja I know… Jewbacca’s post made me think and think some more. I eventually had him try out both bikes and for some reason could not get his feet down with the Marin but he could with the Trek. The Trek I actually think is also better for smaller kids (even tho the dad might want something more complicated for his kid). The V brakes and SS gearing are much more kid friendly and it is sooo much lighter (so slight dad win even though my bike weighs as much as a horse 😂

Anyway tomorrow is his birthday and I can’t wait to see the look on his face. He thinks his surprise is a marshmallow of all things 😂

Adjusted the stack and made sure everything is good to roll.

Today we decided to upgrade to some proper mountain bike trails. A big upgrade over the trips around the neighbourhood. We took on some of the Constantia Greenbelt mountain bike trails. We conquered the Keysers River Trail, the Sillery Walk and the Silverhurst Trail. It was also officially our longest ride at just over 11km.

My son felt like a "proper" mountain biker. He even had his 1st real crash. He unfortunately fell victim to a nasty root and then found out what an OTB was. He was a real champion and after some "magic spray" (wound spray) dusted himself off and carried on as if nothing had happened. He struck up a conversation with another biker. Turns out he too had fallen on his ride today. So according to him all bikers fall, so therefore my son is now a "proper mountain biker". Thank you to the mountain biker who took the time to chat to my son.

My daughter rode with me on her yellow Feva seat and loved every minute of it. Lots of wohoo's and singing of head, shoulders, knees and toes. Continuously pointing to the way forward and saying go faster!

We found a lovely spot to cool our feet off in the river and have a little snack. My son's words sum up todays adventure perfectly, "This ride is like a dream come true!"

I know that Bridge Cycles had air forks for a 20' Titan Racing bikes. I don't know anymore details, but could be worth giving them a call.

Few months back I needed a basic but function fork for my gravel roadie cross ....

Surving the various suppliers quickly delivered more confusion than results ....

Fork in hand I popped in a Mark.  I understood the aim of the project.

Uhmm, wag, ek bel gou ...

1 minute later the correct part was ordered.

The likes of Mark are invaluable to these projects.

Hope your local bike shops can assist like this to hunt down that elusive part for your projects.

So I was able to take my eldest out while his little brother was at playgroup.
Took him on some single track, man the bigger wheels have really boosted his confidence. They roll over roots so much better than the 14” wheels (sommer makes me want a 29er). He is also riding down “drops” with a lot more ease. We had such a lekker time. Not that I worry about distance but he did 4.5km and I had to be stern about going home for dinner cause he just wanted to ho again. Now he just needs to learn to feather the brakes, when to use the “attack” position and stand and pedal for climbs. Looking forward to more rides. IMG_5978.jpeg.5780680889cbfc4718b577edcf4a5a6a.jpeg

NICE  :)

There is a nice steep grass section at Bloemendal.  PERFECT for learning to feather the brakes, as well as body position on the down and up rides.  Probably 1,2m drop in total .... well worth searching for something like this in your area.  Nice repeatable training.

For the school series, well worth working on track stands and being ready to bolt when the riders ahead moves.  Also to stop and hold the track stand when the groups stuffs up ahead .... each time they have to put their feet down and restart they loose touch with the group.

And then Maritz started playing with track stands, and hopping the front wheel to the side ... eventually doing a 90 degree turn on the spot without putting his foot down ....

They are fearless and pick up these skills so easy ....

it's still in 24" rigid mode, but has kickass bigger volume tyres now.

Wheels, hubs and stuff need to be swapped, and that takes time.

Awesome!! Luckily there are many slopes on the trail and once it sunk in that it is just like the ramps at the skatepark but a little more bumpy and longer he was confident enough to ride down them instead of walking down. He got the hang of it towards the end of the trial but I did not want to carry his bike up again. Here everything is steep up and down 😞 Nothing gradual.
I tried to have a slow race with them the other day, it went better than I thought.
Maritz seems like he is a boss on his bike!

Steep up creates another learning opportunity.

Teach them to take it at some angle, thus not straight up.  They very quickly grasp this concept.

Maritz ..... computer game age now .... I MISS our times on the trails ....

Will try this at a park with paved walkways. Everything here is single track and has so many “steps” due to erosion from the rain that it is difficult to maintain momentum.

I look forward to gaming with them but I hope they will still have their love for the outdoors.

for the second year in a row, HBomb's birthday HAD TO BE AT THE BIKEPARK!

He challenged this dad to dual slalom racing series. He did not lose but as a paid up member he has serious local knowledge.

then his actual family with cousins was supposed to come back the next day, that got rained out.

it remains an awesome place for kids to hang out, love seeing all shapes, ages and sizes there
