Be careful of low GI bars. Whilst low GI is good as a normal day to day food source, they are not that great for racing as whenyou are racing you want whatever you eat to go right into your bloodstream so that you can use it before the race is over. Eating low GI bars during a race may mean the food takes too long to digest and then you will know all about it.

Not saying those bars are not good, but just be careful if you think low GI is always a good thing.

Have you had personal experience of a problem with energy on low GI drinks or bars?

Please give more detail so we can be aware.

Having done the Argus and Momentum 94.7 on low GI (32GI) without any need for "emergency energy supplies" like in my Octane /Bar One / GU / Banana days for these same races, it is important to me to know.

I have had some problems when I have eaten close to a bonk but then still went on and bonked cause the food never went in quick enough.

During the Giro last year I ended up popping caramello bears cause I needed sommething to go in and quick during the 171km 3rd leg. With low glycogen reserves you must get whatever you can in and not be fussy. In events such as the DC when you get to the last 2 hours, you don't want to wait half and hour for an energy bar to digest. Feeding continuously is the key obviously, but when it comes to high intensity racing for 3-5 hours feeding not always easy so there are times when you need that sugar or high GI product. Hence my words, just be careful as low GI is not always a good thing.

I didn't say these are low GI bars.

Bars are for long-term fueling. If you want a spike, suck a goo or sip Powerade.

I don't agree that you want everything you eat directly into your bloodstream. Longer races require some slower-releasing energy and you certainly don't want to do the entire ride with micro-injections of glucose every few minutes.

Bars have their place as does goo and drinks.

Next tome you are in the que at Woolworths food, look at their bars, they are not sports bars, so are not marked up to hell, but the carp/protein/fat ratios are perfect for me.

and they tast the bomb.

Am looking for any suggestions re what is a good bar to ride/race on...

I generally use PVM/Jungle Bars/USN and the odd mule bar for special occassions :D

Thing is, I dont want to pay a fortune for bars, so has anyone got suggestions of what they ride on that doest cost R20 a bar, as the aforementioned ones have been overused and I need to try something new (but am not sure what!) :) Thx

Powerbar Vanilla crisp or cookies and cream

Alternatively PVM choc-strawberry ^_^

That is all

I use http://www.32gi.com/

So far it is the only thing that has helped me (I used to use goo's and energade but then I just got heartburn).

Not that I am a long-distance rider. I am very small and have a high metabolism so have to eat constantly as well as drink the 32GI otherwise I bonk after an hour....

I have spoken to a couple of people about 32GI and so far only positive feedback.

When you are next at a cycling expo eg. Argus chat to the salespeople and I'm sure they'll be able to contribute.

Who needs a bar that costs more than ten bucks? That's just highway robbery, I don't care what you put in it. Unless you are at Cape Point gift shop. Out there you are farked for options and you have to cough up the 14 bucks for your bar one. Thanks SAN Parks, after that I need a sanitary pad for my violated butt cheeks. Great ostriches though.

that's cheaper than a PVM! where from? Dischem?

Whats wrong with PVM?

SPAR is cheaper that DISCHEM. MACRO sell by the box (20's) at about 1.50 to 2.oo bucs cheaper per bar.

No choke fruity flavours, with little bits. Whats not to LOOVE?

The fact that you can't breath for 3 minutes per bite when your heart is at 95% max durng a race. Then when you finally get to chew thebar your find your teeth are loose. :D

Try taking a BITE that you can breath through then mate.

It's your fault if you go for the strawberry choc flavour, and the one with nuts in it. Those are for strenous bass fishing sessions. Not cycling. :whistling:
