Does anybody know what sort of price you're looking at for one of those camelbak vests? And doesn't your drink get all warm then?

Road cones! Took me out at last years 99'r. This year I knew they were coming. But I saw a guy in front of me, towards the front of a large bunch, with many guys behind me, ride directly for one then swerve out to the right at the last moment. Everyone else was already going left. So of course the natural instinct is to swerve in the same direction as the guy in front - in this case right,, which woulda meant hitting the cone and going down. But like I said I knew what was in the road, and had already warned those behind me to watch out for road traffic and to ease left. Screw you guy who swerved right. You suc! You coulda taken a lot of people down with you.

I was doing a mtb race years back , we were still on the tar before hitting the dirt, doing 80 plus on a decent , someone in front hit a cone and send it flying back through the bunch, just moved my head out of the way in time , pity about the guys behind me! was not time to warn anyone!

When you get Camelbak you need to trade your bike in as well as forgo one months rent in order to be able to get in the first repayment - this is why us roadies use bottles

Hi hey i am not sure i cant see them being to expencive. The only problem with them i think is cleaning them. If they not expencive you can also replace . I am going to go that way for sure.

At the recent Troisport Joburg City triathlon it was amazing to see how much stuff was lost on the road, whole tubbies with goodies inside, tubes, water bottles, pumps, gas canisters. If I had the time I could have had a auction after the race and made a small fortune. Either way avoiding obstacles of various types (including cones) was defintely a priority.

+1 - they are damn expensive for what they do, and one small hole, there goes the pouch = new pouch which means more money! Bottle = R20. I re-use mine and haven't lost one in a race so far (road).

I recall an article about Lance Armstrong (mentioning him at my own peril) experimenting with increasing performance by controlling body temperature by riding with an ice packed vest. Sounds to me like one of those Camelback vests full of ice and energy drink is exactly what is needed for this afternoon's ride (sweltering in C Town) and perhaps even the upcoming Boschendal (notorious for heat). I suppose your drink will get warm while your body stays cool for longer. Any opinions? Sorry for the hijack.

good rant ronnie! drink at the back or the side ppl

i still maintain that burry stander would have won the epic if he had camelbak as a sponsor (where is that crash video now?)

The Herald was also littered with those blue Powerade bottles that were in the goodie bag. If I had one on the bike I would chucked it as well....the mouthpieces were pathetic.....

If I want to take a drink I tend to move out of close proximity as I know I tend to weave a bit when handling the bottle. I did drop a bottle during the Tour Durban on the first climb, and there was a fast bunch approaching me from behind. Thankfully the camber of the road helped. I jumped of the bike and got the bottle out of the road (they were about 40m behind me when it fell) with a bit of space and no distress to the bunch.

+1, and learn to use the bottle. The only thing I can think is that those novices don't do long enough training rides to use a water bottle. Because if they did, they'd know that drinking from the bottle is a skill to learn, just like cornering, braking, whatever.

People just need to apply some common sense when they're in a bunch. I remember at 94.7 we had this idiot in the Q group who sat up and put his hands on his head, in the middle of a tight bunch heading down the M1.

You don't have to be a pro, just use your brain a bit.

Um, can we rather teach people how to remove their bottle, drink, and safely return the bottle to its cage, so that at some point, maybe they can stop being Novices?

Or is this just a trick to try and keep everyone at the back of the bunch so you can win the sprint?

WOT?

And you have nuthing to say about speling, punktuachin and grammir?

Or did you just give up and role around?
