So I got the shock of my life today...

For the past three years or so Ive really had to focus on my career and a back injury kept me off the bike for a while.

Today I got the old girl out, sorted the rear shock, set the gears and sorted the squeel out on the discs.

Took the bike for a +- 2km ride and I died. I can't believe how unfit I am. In my younger days I used to race DH, did lots of XC and I could throw myself off almost anything on a trials bike.

Today I am a fraction of the man I used to be.

Any advice on helping a 30y/o get his lazy ass back into shape?

I got going at age 38 a few yrs back. It doesnt take long before you fit right in.

My advice? Find a route or two that you love and/or a couple of friends you love to do it with.

30 ia a good time to make that discovery - much better to wake up & change your lifestile now than to try do emergency repairs at 40 or 50something.

My advice? Make sure it is fun, then it will be easy to keep riding! Do it with a few mates, the motivation is so much easier. Set a goal, like doing a relaxed race in 6 months?

Thanks for all the replies. I really feed motivated to get my health in order this year.

Hitting 30 in some way opened my eyes a bit.

Time to ditch the smokes and replace it with a bite-valve in my mouth :D

Yea I know the feeling - I was off my bike for 2+ years after back injury then I did the 100+km Crater Cruise, jeez I suffered.

Just don't stress about it, set some goals, do some circuits at Groenies, whatever ... just enjoy your riding, and be thankful you can.

And resist the temptation to feel any guilt if you find yourself amongst the back markers, you are not alone.

ha ha ha - i know how you feel....

My first ride on the pony was 3.5km to a mates house to "do a ride from there".

I nearly sold the bike the same day!

Strongs bro - Just keep peddling..... U'll be there in no time.

Quit the smoking, I did 13 months ago and channeled the money and time into cycling. I turn 38 this year so its never too late to quit.

Try entering a small race that is still a few months away and use that as your goal.

Slow and steady...
