  1. Well is all started well!

3 Mungrels on a mission to do a 180 km ride.

The first 113 km went like a dream.

But on our way to phase 2 of the ride. Feeling fantastic, I got hit by a coward in a car.

He, like cowards do, decided to flee the scene.

Thanks to the heroic efforts of the SAPD and local security companies, he was apprehended 8km from the scene after a witness to the accident took the quick action to report his registration number on a whatsapp group.

I dont remember much as I was knocked out cold. I scan has shown that there is no brain damage. But that is because they discovered during the scan that, as everyone expected, I dont have a brain.

The coward has registered a case against me for damages to his vehicle. Claiming that I rode into him. Witnesses will prove this to be a blatant lie of a person not willing to own his shite.

While many people were looking for the vehicle for which I am eternally thankful, kudos to the Officer from Afri Forum security patrols who spotted the vehicle and ensured that the coward was escorted to the nearest SAPD station.

Aish glad you are ok! Where did it happen if I may ask. Was also out on Saturday, the roads seemed busier than 'normal' for this time of month with lots of out of town cars around. I stuck mostly to the gravel but noticed this when looping through Noordstad/Bayswater.

  2. brilliant thanks, I'm soft will use something else if I do it.  Do able is not my idea of fun for 180km.  I'd rather be on the right bike.  Even though it's only the half, quite a challenge for me

Forgot to add, you will most likely always have riders in sight or fairly close by if doing the half, you will start catching and passing the full guys at some point as well. At least the ones as slow as me...

  3. I see the half runs during daylight hours which is great because I can barely navigate in the sun never mind the dark.

This looks like a great target for me, relatively close by and 71kms further than I have ever ridden a bicycle.

When people say gravel rideable, does that mean comfortably for non chuck norris types?

Are there enough riders that I can do this without getting lost? - you might think this ridiculous but I got lost during the Sani (3x and with a garmin)

The route is pretty straight forward and well marked, no navigation necessary.

A gravel bike is probably do-able but not my idea of fun. The route is rough in sections and I can't see the descent of Rooiberg being easy or enjoyable on a gravelbike, it is VERY rough and loose in places.

  4. I see they are still punting entries so planning on going ahead...

Guess we will have to wait and see...They will hopefully defer entries to next year if it doesn't go ahead.

At least riders are spread out over the 361km's but the CP's might be a bit crowded with the support, especially CP2 where the half starts.

  5. Don't let Vettes fool you, he is using 36One as a recovery ride before Munga...

Like anything I guess it is as hard as you make it. I am slow(my previous 2 took 28 and 26 hours respectively) and I like getting my monies worth and for me it is a hard ride. For us Free Staters a battle with all the climbing but then again I know I don't train enough for that. But hopefully I will crack the 24 hour mark this year.

The heat will be a challenge if it happens...had a cold and rainy Hell&Back a couple of years back in the same region during November so it might not be too bad. Or it will be VERY hot.

Strategies regarding lights etc will be interesting with the new 15.00 start time.

  6. 'Closest' I've experienced was sitting in a tent at about 5950m on Aconcagua when a storm moved in quickly. Talk about the smell in the air and the charge. Had a couple of Italian climbers not far away screaming their heads off, first time they experienced lightning.

Needless to say - no sleep that night and had to dig out of the tent in the morning after a significant amount of snow fell.

  7. Time to shift focus...will take this week easy and then focus training on Trans and ramp up from there for 36one in November. Just moved my accommodation dates as well - got lucky on that with no penalties.

Yeah, reckon we might cook. Or have rain and cool weather. This is turning out to be a popular weekend.

    IMSA

    36One

    Hell&Back

    all on the same weekend!

  8. It seems that the new route results in a bit less climbing over the first half, looks like almost 400m less if I'm not mistaken.

My training is sort of on par with last year at this stage and can hopefully ramp it up a bit over the next month.

Main aim is coming in at under 24 hours, with the new start time even a 27 hour ride guarantees a daylight finish

How is everyone else getting on?

  9. It will be disappointing if he leaves the scene with this mediocre set of performances behind him.. He is worthy of so much more.

I'll never forget the scene of Gary Kirsten walking off the pitch after his final innings, openly overcome with emotion, with the whole field and crowd applauding him.... That is how you are meant to retire

My 'favourite' retirement test - Kallis scoring a hundred in his last innings against India.

  10. If you manage to extend that route to CT and have your bike with you I would happily take you for a spin on the Tygerberg trails :)

Shotto, might just take you up on that offer as long as you do not try and kill me again - remember 'Die Vrystaat is plat'...

We are extending down to Klapmuts area for a couple of days after Tulbagh, will let you know how it goes...

  11. Hi Everyone,

Everything on here is awesome! I hope you don't mind but I think this might be as good a place as any to ask for advice on a route from BFN to Tulbagh this month.

I don't want to do the straight N1 bash and I'm thinking of going via Victoria West (overnight on Friday - I can only leave work at midday and we have to go via Smithfield as well) and from there onto Loxton-Fraserburg-Sutherland.

Google then advises me to go to the N1 until just after Touws River and then onto Ceres, the other alternative is via the Tankwa but I have read some bad 'reviews' and advisories against taking this road?

Any suggestions/comments on the road conditions etc?

    Driving a 'normal' 2.8 Hilux.

    Thank you.

  12. Hey all

Anyone done this race and 36One?

Would love to know how they compare ?

No comparison. I find 36One much tougher - apart from the distance it is more climbing per km and the fact that you only start late in the day brings fatigue into the equation much earlier. Heat is also a much bigger factor(for me at the back end) than for Trans.

  13. Hope he didn't have an off where they fell off the face of the earth...or tracker acting up.

Looks like it was tracker issues they are very close to each other again with Thinus now in front.
