By the time I'm fit enough to make it there and back the Wimpy will have been hit again. The missus and I got married at Wicker Country Lodge about 27 years ago....it used to be just outside the far side of Magalies on the RHS, I told her I'd take a tent and overnight on the ruins and ride back the next day - it was demolished, maybe due to the fact that we had a huge party....🤣

Ja, they demolished Wickers (Tea Garden) just before we had the 2010 soccer world cup. Someone thought they were going to get rich with the gazillions of tourists that were to flock to SA and they had the bright idea of knocking it all down to rebuild something better...and they just never did!

Its still a mess on the corner now! Pity as it was a nice property going down to the river.
I think the owner was Keith when you had your wedding there?
The last time I saw this property for sale it was going for something daft like 7 million or something around there.

I would think twice about camping there though as the river area is a prime walking and entry zone for our local Nyope Boys on their foraging jaunts....😀

Here's few options, have fun. Wimpy in Magalies is closed for now so stop at the garage or next to the Spar is also a very nice place.

I prefer to start from Riverstone as to avoid the 30km of tar if you start from Bidon or Neck and Deck.

They are busy rebuilding Wimpy now, should be finished by mid/end April, and then we wait for the next truck accident...Always sit at the back of Wimpy....

There is also the Little Roadhouse just over the road and railway line from the Wimpy where you can sit down and eat. Burgers, pizzas, chips etc,

    Hi all,

So, looking for some advice (or commiseration).  Last weekend a friend of mine and I rode the 105km mini-munge route (out the back end of Magalies, past the Spar, parallel to railway line and onto big gravel road).  About 3km into the big sand road, we were chased by 2 big dogs - potentially European sheep dogs / similar guard dogs.  It was petrifying and had it not been for my husband who was seconding in a vehicle - I am actually not sure how it would have ended.

    Couple of questions:

    1) Anyone else had this issue and have any advice on how two ladies are supposed to deal with these dogs (or I suppose other chaser dogs in general), who are clearly able to scale a fence and take their sheep guarding duty very seriously

    2) Any alternative roads that can give a similar resultant distance and climbing - as aside from these "human-eating beasts", it's actually a nice route

    Appreciate the input!

If you headed west from Magalies along the railway servitude to the main dirt road then you need to be aware that the Koesterfontein area is full of Zama Zamas now...Ive not had issues but I will no longer cycle out there as its pretty isolated and the cops in Magalies will never find you...Lots of old mine shafts out there...Used to be old mine gear, cocopans and  stamps and all sorts back in the early days...Anyway...

You could take the railway line and then about 3km out of Magalies on the right you will see a dirt road leading to Rietpoort, you can cross the tracks and the R509 tar road and you can take this dirt road all the way to Vlakdrift and then from there head down towards Naaupoort..

Or you could just cross the Koesterfontein dirt road and continue on with the railway line servitude which will also take you up to Vlakdrift, parallel to the R509...

  4. Is this the race that went down the N14 from Cradlestone Mall to the Oaktree garage then down the R563 to the turn off to the caves? If so this was a bit of a pigs ear when I drove past at 7:30 and again heading home again at 8:30...

Cyclists all over, on both sides of the road......marshalls flapping their hands about in vague directions and no-one bothering to pay attention anyway...cars just turning in front of cyclists...cyclists that look behind them then veer off in the opposite direction...Add to that the crazy speeding muppets on motorbikes.....

You are way braver than me to do these events on the roads...
    😅

  6. I have those Shimano hollow tech cranks, I usually use a BB-51 but cant find one...
I found a BB-52 at a bike shop and bought this....

Shop has now told me they dont have the BB52 but are sending me the Ultegra BB....
They say its the same fit and uses the same tool..

Can anyone confirm this please? I dont want to wait a week for my delivery only to find the crank wont fit...

  7. Chuck it. I would not be happy riding that if it was to be repaired.....
I wasnt too happy about the small crack in my (also Momsen😁) frame, it was welded...it failed...

    Thank you😀

Problem is being in small town, so very limited access to all things cycling.

I see you stay in Dundee...I did a few years a DHS back in the 80s....(I stayed in Dannhauser)

Isnt there a co-op there? I use a cheap red water soluble degreaser from them...Its around R120 a liter and you just dilute it...works great.

noob question, since the crack appears to be on the welding isn't just a matter of clearing the old welding and doing a new one and repaint ? why replace the whole frame ?

Dont let them fool you into thinking it can be welded...Been there...got that stupid shirt...(Up yours Momsen.😁)
New frame or your money back if you still have warranty available...

  10. Not sure where you are located and what you want to spend but the bike shop in Rustenburg got me a Recon 4 years back (they could get others as well)...None of the bike shops had any even back then...Shop name is Cycle Zone.

  11. 2 x Ghosts failed on the chainstay where a cable guide was welded (same spot, both frames)

1 x Momsen on the area where the seat stays, seat tube and down tube all come together...was welded...failed again..

So for me I would say its anywhere there is a weld?

In case you don't know, apparently it is very bad to pick up tortoises. It messes up their GPS. I have heard this more than once. I no longer do it. Just stand in the road till it is safe. Just my 2 cents for the day.

Ive only found a couple of tortoises on my rides...if they are near a road and/or my tortoise eating brothers then I move them...
    Otherwise happy travels!
