  1. The R has raised itself from its depths of depression so prices should all get a little better than at present. Surely? The base Enduro at $3k is good value is it not?
  2. Time to do some bike light and battery testing. This is going to be interesting on my 160mm travel trail bike :-)
  3. Spaz pioneered the long and slack trail bike before any of the late Johnnies like Giant and SC et al. My 2011 has 477mm reach in XL and a 66.5 h/a which was revolutionary at the time. They have slackened them out a bit but the reach numbers are still lagging the 2011 figures. As for short chainstays (which are not the be all and end all of a good bike IMO), my bikes are 412mm because its a 26er :-) That said, I'd love the new one, in 29, nogal. I am not convinced by the 2.6 tyres on the 650b - Graves had an awful EWS on them with two flats. How, in this day and age can a rider be expected to test new tyres on an important EWS race. I am willing to bet that had he been on Minion 2.4's he would have been in the top three, but who knows.
  4. Bike discount.de can be cheaper and they happily ship here - even complete Radon bikes. I think its worth getting XT an rear derailleur over SLX - the SLX item is far heavier due to abundant use of steel instead of ali and the XT cassette also weighs significantly less. Not sure about the brakes, but I doubt there is major weight to be saved there and the performance is allegedly on a par. The new SLX crank looks better than the old one. Does it use a different BB as XT does?
  5. Looks like everyone's going baby blue and red for 2017...
  6. Awesome spot. Camped there for a weekend many years ago. Hasn't changed a bit!
  7. Yes, that's a major factor to ensure sustainability going forward.
  8. A great event at the best mtb destination in SA! Until Tokai is up and running again of course :-)
  9. He did of course crash hard despite his 740mm bars. It looked like he needs special short pedal cranks too... Its not only tree trunks, its roots as well!
  10. I don't think it has anything to do with your sag or spring curve. Try varying your rebound. If its too slow the fork does whats known as "packing up" ie rides lower in its travel after repeat hits ie fast smaller bump compliance at speed suffers. This would explain why you are finding the fork fine on medium to bigger hits. Generally you should run your fork rebound faster than your rear shock. Its also impossible for any fork to completely smooth out all hits, so perhaps you need to adjust your expectations too? :-)
  11. Will be great until you try those drop offs you ride so easily on your 160mm bike, methinks. Would limit the fun factor for me but could increase the fun factor for someone coming off a marathon bike... And after watching the video - those riders could make any bike look good - better than nearly 100% of us Hubbers...
  12. Well here's hoping. A quick browse of their website provided no clue and only one frame for sale, an Izumi....
  13. The price on that thing is very competitive - around 2k Euro.
  14. Maybe some additional infrastructure will eventually make its way there? This is probably also the problem with EWS venues in SA. Great tracks abound but the facilities are lacking...
  15. AFAIK the old DH into flow is gone for now but there is major building work on the go right now. The top three Canaries are all open and riding better than ever. The Red Phoenix has bedded in nicely and riding well after the first winter rain. Never ending Story is open and may have seen some work this month. The lower Firehut trail is open and I think they are busy on the upper sections now.
  16. R10k for a handle bar distraction of note. No wonder it has incident detection :-) Seriously though I'd love a computer like this, but that money represents lots of bike spares and rides and I have Strava...
  17. Deon, is this your opinion or that of TMNP or some expert? Whose notes were these? Agreed, education of all parties is essential and signage for runners and walkers to stay on trails but also to expect bikes on a trail is a must.
  18. Sounds like more of a gastronomic experience than a ride :-) #mtbaintcheapnomore
  19. Ya, great review! I remember when the R was 11 to the E - then these bikes felt like good value. Local prices are now rather expensive thanks to the 25% loss in value the Rand has suffered since 2012. I sometimes wonder why I ride a 160mm travel bike - usually on some boring slog trail riding with a mate on an 11kg marathon bike - and then I think of the fun I have on my local loop. The drop offs and little jumps I seek out and the baby head strewn descent I can hit as fast as I like. Then I know why. For well under 49k you could get a Spaz Enduro on special with dropper post recently so I am not sure the value is there even at that price point.
  20. The colours are better than the new Trance Advanced which is boring blue/black/gray... Now if it had been pink in these pics how many of you roff ouens would be drooling??
  21. Can't wait for his second attempt - with a parachute, perhaps...
