  1. Agree witH Garmin 910XT - and you can get an HRM as well. As ebst i know, its still not available in SA but it seems to be a major improvement over the 310XT, especially in size.
  2. Anything above R500 should protect the same, the difference being in looks, ventilation and weight. Stick to the brands that offer some sort of decent crash replacement incentive.
  3. There are only two types of riders... those that have fallen and those that are yet to fall. I have been riding for over a year without falling, and then at a water table in a race I unclipped on the left as usual, dropped my left foot to the ground, and then gently fell to the right in slow motion.
  4. Gu always made me bonk. Coke I find bloats me up, so only have some at the finishing table. no substitution for eating - during the race I have peanut butter sandwiches.
  5. So is it that they support cyclists, or cyclists support them - big difference!
  6. Just as IronMidge said - email reception@universalproperty.co.za and ask them to add you to the mailing list. They will email you on Monday mornings.

for the feedback. unfortunately for me I ordered from my optom two days ago
  8. I had to go back three times to find any clue to the number four. Just saying.
  9. The Dischem special runs until this weekend - 32Gi for R159.95.
  10. +1. I find Hubbers are generally very keen to share their knowledge on the forums, so why not help a youngster at the lbs? I fully believe that the stores should train their staff adequately, but a little advise from the customer could mean the youngster gaining confidence and learning at the same time. At the same time if the LBS says your bike has ultegra everything, surely you visually confirm this at the same time. If a car salesman says your car has satnav, electric windows and a sunroof, you dont wait to go home before deciding to check if it is there.
  11. Friends and I generally do Thursdays. Last week there were some awefully helpful folks that taught me how to slipstream properly who I never got to thank properly - thanks guys! Well worth the effort - I think it should open at least half an hour earlier as it really isn't practical to cycle till 7.
  12. They wear tight lycra clothing that outlines their nether regions, shave their legs, and .... Oh, crap, wait, ummmmmm
  13. Should a beginner use their lower (easier) gears as much as possible and build up a higher cadence in addition to making things easier for them, or should they be encouraged to use higher (more difficult) gears as much as possible and build strength? An argument put forward is that a cyclist uses similar amounts of energy whether using lower or higher gears, but would gain more speed with the higher gears. I disagree. My question is for a roadie beginner, but I am sure it applies to mtb's as well. Whats your take on this - lower or higher gears, and why? Would your answer be different for an experienced cyclist? Also, how best to demonstrate to a beginner that he/she is in an appropriate gear(the person doesn't have a candence sensor/counter) other than saying it feels right?
  14. How is the duty paid for - added to credit card locally by CRC or do you pay SARS/courier separately before delivery of items via EFT?
  15. Also a, well I can't really call myself a "sufferer". I carry my Ventolin pump when I run or cycle, but I find if I take a puff five minutes before I start then I usually don't need it again over my 21km run. If I reallllly push myself, I may need another puff while running, but I try to build up slowly so i don't erach that point at all. I think the best way of managing it is to enjoy your sport without pushing yourself to the very limit where you start to (potentially) damage yourself.
  16. If you actually lost 10kgs in body weight it would make a huge difference as your body is accustomed to lugging that extra weight around 24/7. So you should see some gain by adding 10kgs to your weight when you train, but the impact on your fitness/strength/longevity would only really show if you trained for a longer periods of time often. Maybe my logic is skewed, but I liken your question to weight training in gym - heavy weight with low reps gains muscle with a little stamina, but lower weights with more reps gives you longevity. Maybe use two different combinations of weights which could vary with your route (heavy weight, hilly route, shorter ride at greater intensity gains more muscle, while a lighter or even the same weight on a longer route at a slower speed may build more stamina).
  17. There is another option, if I may. Saris bones - bike stays fully assembled with wheels, so ready to ride. It can be used on most vehicles without modifications (except hatchbacks with a spoiler fitted - sedans with spoilers are not a problem), no towbar needed, and looks cool too. Cons: If the feet are dirty, you will scratch your vehcile paintwork, and you cannot lock the bikle to the rack.
  18. So not many cars then. How many cyclists on an average Saturday, and what times do they ride? From what time can we ride?
  19. WRT the gears 2 and 3, have your RD hanger checked, if all the other gears are fine then the hanger could be bend or the RD cage itself. That is if the barrel adjusting does not sort it. Will do this evening Niner - thanks for the assistance.
  20. Thanks guys, Tankman,I have tried what you said - if I get the two problematic gears sorted out with the adjuster screw, then the biggest wheel ticks. If I get that sorted out, one or more of the others tick. The front is not too much of an issue, as it doesn't move off the chainrings - the chain rubs against the inside of the FD which is sorted out by me 'changing' gear once more, similar to how Niner describes it above.
  21. Hi guys, Having a problem with my rear cassette/deraileur and chain. The deraileur can't seem to keep the chain on the second and third biggest gears - I get a constant 'ticking' sound, like the chain is trying to change gear without success. I bought the bike second hand. The bike was serviced a few months ago, and no change, despite me taking the bike back (a different gear ticks now). It has Ultegra components on. Another question while I am at it - is it normal/fine for the front derailuer to move to three different positions, despite only having two rings on the front? Is this a compatibility issue, or should this not be a concern? Any assistance would be appreciated - I am a newbie and have no technical knowledge - don't want to send the bike in for another service or for parts without having an inkling of a possible solution.
  22. Its fairly easy - when u switch the watch on for the first time it will take you through all the user setup info. For run-/cycle-specific info go to settings, select activity and setup there - there are many options, no easy way to explain but similar to the 405 setup process. Just remember to switch OFF notifications every kilometre if you want a beep with the km time each km (not sure why it works like that).
  23. +1. I thought the same thing looking at that photo. But with all fairness, how do you prove the crack was not caused by the person who bought the wheels from Edge? In fact, that guy himself never saw the damage - it was seen by his LBS - what is to say that they never caused the damage? It is a tough one, but we can all consider it a very good (and Edge can also consider it a possibly expensive) lesson to always make sure we get what we thought we were going to get, and we inspect it thoroughly on day ONE.
  24. 310XT - but it is not accurate in water - in fact, Garmin does not call it a triathlon watch, and does not even use the swimming 'avatar' for the 'swim' leg. The older 310XTs used an avatar of a person skiing. Not sure if recent software upgrades made it any better.
  25. If you are out R7 grand then rather look at the Small Claims Court - you both won't need/be allowed lawyers, and both can argue the facts as each sees it. You have evidence the goods were sold malefides (in bad faith re the hub, cassette etc) and were not of the specified year. Slim can bring her evidence to court as well. And the court will rule. In your favour is that you did refund the guy who bought the wheels from you (could the crack have been caused by him), but I think you can get at least some of that R7k back.
