  1. Saris Bones, has a variey of adjustments and will fit easily. I have a two bike one, and I know someone with a three bike rack. Both used from Jhb to Dbn and no problems with stability or any other issues. Only thing is the plastic nuts do tend to start to strip after a while, but they cost like R25 each, and bike shops do stock them.
  2. She could have blinked 100 times and you would not have noticed her blink, even once
  3. I have a similar thing, a consistent numbness in both hands from the pinkie down to the wrist. Have only ridden about 70km all year while focussing on running and it seems to get more pronounced while I run and when I text on my BlackBerry.
  4. I'd support the litter and get DQ'd rule. I personally carry all my stuff with me, and even during road running races will carry my sachets tot he next water point, or throw them in dustbins along the route.
  5. In this case I agree with you, to a point. Had the cyclist died that would be a different story - irrespective of what happened to the bus driver, the cyclist's wife would have had to endure endless heartache for an entirely avoidable situation. Bottom line, in an fight between an 8kg piece of carbon and tons of metal, the cyclist ALWAYS loses. Cyclists need to keep this in mind, one idiot having a bad day could end your life.
  6. Interesting that so many of the comments at the bottom of the article start along the lines of 'what the bus driver did was wrong but...' That "but" tells us how many people can half-justify the bus driver behavious at some level by the way cyclsist ourselves behave. Did someone say our own worst enemy?
  7. You can count another dozen bikes in that photo, would love to see us being able to communte by bicycle.

    Club100

Well done Club 100, for taking road safety seriously.
  9. Its a sad sad day when we need to consider indemnities in our own backyards. Back in the day, if I fell and hurt myself badly anywhere, it was 'oh it was dangerous - then why the hell did you try it?' What have we become?
  10. Many cyclists are fairly well off, judging by the price of cycling gear (forget even the bicycle itself). I am sure that they can arrange for insurance etc to cover their families if anything happens to them. If this initiative involves giving families moral support and helping them through any trauma then I would support it fully. If it involves financial contributions then I would be hesitant - most of these organisations dont have any corporate governance structures or any documented policies for distibution of funds etc.
  11. Why not load both bikes again on the bike rack, just as they were when you travelled. Then you would easily ascertain if the chaifing could have come from the bike rack or the other bike, or not.
  12. Ameen. And wishing you and the good men that helped you a speedy recovery as well.
  13. Good to hear that the magistrates are taking this seriously. I still think that suspending his licence would have added more of a lesson to this, especially as he had a previous negligent driving ruling against him.
  14. You right - it doesn't look busy at all. But then again, it doesn't take 10 cars to knock into a bunch of cyclists - one lonely vehicle on a lonely road is just as dangerous. Nobody would stop/park their car in the middle of the lane like that, so why their bike and their bodies? And the thing with joining lanes is that drivers tend to look backwards to the road they are joining to make sure there are no cars coming, as opposed to looking forward for obstructions blocking the joining lane. A one ton+ vehicle knocking into a 10kg bike is a no contest win for the car - we as cyclists need to be on the defensive all the time for our own safety. I cannot understand why any cyclist, runner or pedestrian would abdicate their safety responsibility to drivers.
  15. I was thinking the same thing!
  16. RIP to the cyclists, and condolences to their families. No hijack intended, but having read this thread makes me wonder if this incident justifies having cops sit on their butts catching and discouraging speedsters, and possibly saving the lives of two fellow cyclists.
  17. Who are these guys?
  18. The boat club is called Dabulamanzi. Some friends swim there almost every Friday, nobody has gotten sick. Saw some guys swimming after our Saturday morning cycle as well.
  19. Eish! At 40km/h I can only go 40km/h
  20. I don't think its about going faster or even flowting, the argument to be made is mroe about it being a mental confidence booster. And since none of us in this boat (lol, hope we never have to get into the boat) are in it to win, ever, I dont think its a bad thing to let people wear the wet suit until the confidence issue is sorted - after that these same wearers of wetsuits will be able to go without the wetsuit with confidence, and help build the sport.
  21. I know that some motorists have made claims with success here in JHB. I would give your local roads authority a call, and fill in the forms, send in some pics, and worst case scenario would be that you lose some time you could have spent riding.
  22. You ask "do I stick with a winning formula?" My 4 year old would answer that one "Duh"
  23. Taught my daughter (now 8) and have just taken the training wheels off my 4 year old's bike - great moments, and an even better father-child bonding activity.
