  1. Try bibs, its in a whole different league.
  2. Greeting is relative to the pain of the ride. During an interval session or interval session recovery, the hello will be a grunt, followed by a wtf do u want ? When its a casual ride, it will be: how are you SIr/Madem, so pleased to see you sharing my passion for cycling. Have an awesome day and enjoy the view and air, and I might have a coffie with you later ...
  3. I think the safety factor (cars vs bicycles) is why there is such a huge demand in SA for MTB. I also think its safe to say that few cars follows the given speed limit on any road. Just driving to work where the speed limit is 60km/ph, I get a lot of flack for driving at 60km/ph, but i still do 60km/ph
  4. Cycling indoors at home = total boredom. Spinning at a gym : getting better with music and a pumped up class. Riding your bike in rain, snow / heat wave / lekker usual SA day = nothing beats it. Think about the reasons for wanting to train indoors. (In my humble opinion , riding your bike the way it was meant to be, is the best.) Is there a specific reason for wanting to train indoors ? Speed work / sprint training / strength or something different ? (For endurance / base training, an indoor trainer wont cut it for me and I cant think of anything worse than base training on an indoor trainer) There are ways to train on your bike for speed/sprint if you have a specific goal in mind. Joel Friel author of the training bible has some good advice. http://www.joefrielsblog.com/

  6. The best for me is actually looking forward to the trip in and trip home. my route is 20km 1 way, so it adds up to 40km per day. All that and not worrying about being stuck in traffics. A bell does wonders, but some pedestrians are too stupid to realize where the sound is coming from, and when that happens I slow down to a crawl until they notice.
  7. Formula for tubeless: 1 X stans 1 x 20 inch tube 1 x new tyre (I use ust on normal rims) I had the full stans rim strips, but the valve blew. New stans rim strips was 200 bucks vs price of 20inch tube. (cant remember, but was 20-40 bucks) Watch the video above on how to do it. (Ok it took me two tubes to get it right )

  9. When I road cycle, my first directive: "stay alive". All the regular rules apply after that. Take for instance, me crossing a green robot, and a taxi edging its way forward as if to skip. I stopped at the green light. I always assume when on the road, every is out to injure me or worse.
  10. RIP Burry Stander
  11. 1) stopping power (more for commuting and dodging cars, pedestrians and taxis than racing) 2) set of rims last very, very, very long 3) wet weather stopping power (probably same as point 1) disadvantage = weight
  12. Top Gear UK = The best car show on the planet All others are a far away second place. The SA car shows are totally boring with no originality."Here is a car. Wheels + engine. This car drives well and has a good radio zzzz, zzzz, zzzzz" I

    Broken Bones

Yep that happend to me about 5 weeks ago. Lucky no cast. One stupid pedestrian. Need I say more ? My advise to you is, discuss with your doc and see how soon you can straighten you arm. Mine was in a semi cast for +- 2 weeks. I am working on straightening my arm. You may find this is the biggest problem, and is an area where you are going to do a lot of rehab. Very frustrating to be carrying watermelons under the arm I am hoping that I will be able to straighten my arm soon.
  14. I will give some of the experts a call. The worst part is broken elbow: described as impacted fracture with minor angulation at the radial head. (also injured wrist and hand, and twisted bicep muscle, a little shoulder damage as well.) I have medical aid, but it covers only in hospital costs. I would like to claim back anything not covered by my medical aid. (which is my self-insured part of the claim) Interesting that the trama unit had a few other cyclists on the day for various falls. Pedestrians are very dangerous, especially the ones that cross the road without looking . I am sure this is why we have so many pedestrian deaths in this country. Anyone have a radial head fracture ? what is the healing time ?
  15. Hi all, this weekend on my traing ride, a stupid pedestrian (without looking), stepped into the road , and we collided. I would like to claim for my medical expenses from the raf ? Has anyone here done it before ? what steps should be followed ? raf
  16. groenies @600pa = R50 a month. That does not sound expensive at all, considering what you get. Which reminds me that my renewal is almost due
  17. A great race Love the sand road, makes it unique I must remember that the hill in the middle is a friggin pain monster. I allways under estimate it. Will do it again next year 4 sure.
  18. It is said that it takes a while for your body to adapt to cycling. The key thing when you start is to ride, is to build endurance. This means riding at a comfortable gear, which suits you. Once you have done your base milage training, then you can focus on speed and/or power training. These elements form a triangle, with the base training at the bottom. So the short answer is: cycle the base milage first, at a pace and gear that is comfortable for you, and keeps you interested in cycling. Going too hard when you start cycling can be very de-motivating. Once you are comfortable with a base milage that is suitable for the type of races you wish to enter, then you can focus on high cadence and/or high power training. Both cadence and power comes with training. It will be silly to chase power and cadence, when you are new to cycling. Your body still needs to adapt to the stress of cycling. Experienced cyclists will often train at an easy pace on lsd ( long steady distance), and mix that up with hill repeats / interval sprint type training when preparing for races, so that they build a strong triangle (endurance/power/cadence) to draw from during a race.
  19. I have been using mtb cleats on my road bike for two years. I did not want to have two different pairs of shoes. THe contact point with the pedal may be smaller, but there is still 360 degree power available. I cant see that power will be reduced.
  20. These are what bicycle prices should be measure against: Sport Bike and Road Bike If you paid more than the sport bike price for your bicycle, you were done in big time.
  21. Hi All, Is it happening tonight at 5pm ? 20 bucks still ?

  23. Maxxis crossmark. Latest about 2 years for me. I rode it till it was dead. Used my bike at least 4 times a week. A little bit of tar 10%, and then most of it offroad 90%. I wasnt worried about the wear, only replaced once a bubble appeared where it became thin to the canvas underneath. Caused an un-natural bounce when cycling

    Road Hogs

Let me just say: When there is a bike race like "ride for sight", "carnival city", etc, etc with no road closure then its ok for us to ride all over the road in huge groups 50- 200 cyclists every 5 min apart, not having a care for cars or traffic. No one then has a camera to say, look at how bad they are cycling. Now when you are on a training ride with 20 odd cyclists, at 6am on a very quite road with maybe 15 cars an hour it becomes a huge issue ? Honestly, sometimes the plank in someones eye is a splinter is anothers. MY advice to my fellow cyclists is to ride safe without endangering your life. My advice to motorists is to be a little patient on that quite road where there is hardly any traffic and you find yourself behind some cyclists on a country road. From both sides there should be a little tolerance and no advantages taken. I agree that riding more than two abreast on a training ride is wrong, however in a road race with no road closure we as cyclists find it acceptable. Its a confising moral position, but one which we accept and tolerate. Maybes its just the way things work. Who Knows ? All I know I love cycling and see you all at carnival cycle race tomorrow.
