  1. in the spirit of ultimate pedantry, Bartlett took this one to the top. The Ass Foods saga continues. Late last June, 2oceansVibe was forwarded a little but of spice by prominent Cape Town personality, Bartlett. Bartlett told us that he intended to lay a complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa regarding the offensive (and frankly, traumatising) Ass Wrap packaging at the Steenberg Pick n Pay. The ASA has ruled in favour of Bartlett, and forced the hand of Steenberg Pick n Pay to wipe its store of all Ass related paraphenalia, amending the phrase to “Assorted”. 25 Aug 2011 Mr Bartlett lodged a consumer complaint against a Pick n Pay leaflet promoting its weekly specials for the Steenberg store. The advertisement contains, inter alia, the wording “Ass Wraps 1499 Each”. COMPLAINT In essence, the complainant submitted that the advertisement is offensive as the abbreviation has a double, and offensive meaning. RELEVANT CLAUSE OF THE CODE OF ADVERTISING PRACTICE In light of the complaint Clause 1 of Section II (Offensive advertising) was taken into account. RESPONSE The respondent submitted that it has rectified the issue by ensuring that all advertising notices in the Steenberg store containing the word “Ass” have been changed to the word “Assorted”. ASA DIRECTORATE RULING The ASA has a long standing principle which holds that where an advertiser provides an unequivocal undertaking to withdraw or amend its advertising in a manner that addresses the concerns raised, that undertaking is accepted without considering the merits of the matter. The respondent’s undertaking appears to address the complainants’ concerns and there is therefore no need for the Directorate to consider the merits of the matter at this time. The undertaking is accepted on condition that the advertisement in question is not used again in future in its current format. unfortunately 2OV uses an ass server and none of these seem to actually hold the images anymore. https://www.2oceansvibe.com/tag/ass-foods/ edit: internet archive found me one
  2. if you missed it, you missed it https://www.facebook.com/SSWCSA https://sswc2025.com/ i knew about it, considered it. looked fun, low key fun. The Legend of Queen WanGeaZeaand the One True Gear Long ago, in the rugged hills of South Africa, where the trails were wild and untamed, lived the fearless Queen WanGeaZea. She was not just any ruler—she was a dreamer, an innovator, and most importantly, too stubborn for gears. Frustrated with the endless clanking and breaking of derailleurs, she declared, “Enough of these silly chains of oppression! One gear to rule them all!” And so, in her royal workshop (a humble hut with a very judgmental goat), she built her own single-speed mountain bike from scrap metal, wood, and sheer determination. The village laughed. “How will you climb the great hills without gears?” they teased. But WanGeaZea just grinned and pedaled straight up the steepest mountain, legs burning, heart pounding, and pride fully intact. The skeptics watched in awe as she coasted down, dust swirling behind her like a trail of victory. Inspired by her madness—er, vision—others stripped their bikes of gears and joined her. They became the Single-Speed Tribe, warriors of the hills, fueled by grit, laughter, and very strong calves. To this day, if you ride through those hills, you might hear their battle cry: “Shifting is for the weak!”
  3. I would say this bike is worth R0.0 That's because if you spend R1500 fixing it up, you will probably be able to sell it for R1500. it's a project bike, if you want to start tinkering go for it. Avalanche had some great bikes in the 90s/early 2000s - i think this came after that. If the wheels wobble when you spin them, I'd walk away and spend your time and money on somethig else in your price range that has been ridden recently.
  4. Since this a hot topic, this 20" bike has been a great platform. I don't have the time to clean it up, hence the price. https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/kids-bikes/841765/spez-hotrocklooking-to-go-to-new-places totally negotiable. Had loads of FB tyrekickers - don't waste time on FB marketplace.
  5. double post
  6. Was def 2009 the super windy one, but potayto potarto https://www.news24.com/sport/OtherSport/Cycling/South-Africa/wind-warning-for-cape-town-cycle-tour-20170311 at least they did talk about it upfront! You're not quite right there, here's the archive post - it was due to wind. https://bikehub.co.za/news/cape-town-cycle-tour-2017-cancelled-r6257/?srsltid=AfmBOorXu_825nviZJpPnRTamIgBOy82EtuYdn4ce-JNUctBBEUgczZn but it does bring up a good point. Argus 2017 was cancelled AFTER there was a protest threatening road closure in masi (I think it might actually have been OV). The organisers had a backup plan of cutting out that loop and blackhill was to be used instead. There had also been fires on the mountain in the buildup. Whether those two contributed or not is up for debate (as it was at the time).
  7. Guys we are not discussing the eligibility issue of transathletes in college swimming, bikes are non-binary these days. You will get unclassifiable flavours of the three main types overlapping, deal with it or wait till the braai where we get to chew the fat. That out the way, what is the colour called @Benky, does your wife even know you have her bike?
  8. This call is ultimately not made by the Race organisers, who feel the heat afterwards. You just have to hope that they have the best info in order to make the decision, and it's not a knee jerk. I kitesurf, so watch the wind forecast a LOT. I also did the Peninsula(SA marathon champs) earlier this year where it was very windy (and a bit wild in Woodstock) but such a smaller field. I did the cancelled argus (my own ride - but good call by them) and the 2009 super windy one when portaloos were blowing over and the tunnel of death under the Civic centre stopped many in their tracks. Running in extreme wind is IMHO so much easier than my cycling. I took a screengrab of the wind at Paarden island station here. It did gust to 30kts during the time they made the call. This is not out the ordinary. VERY easy to point fingers afterwards, I don;t know what the expected forecast was for the morning. The more I look at it this Abbott majors thing looks like a massive grift and but everyone is too busy drinking the Kool-aid.
  9. rent a kids bike for 2 months? You night find a buy-back option more viable. I'd contact them now

    Cape Epic 2026

Spent a bit of time round there, having organised a 100km AR in the Koo Valley - lovely place. Going back 20+ years, "The Krakadouw" was one of the classic MTB destination races on the calendar. Mitzi from Makadas Adventures (https://makadasadventures.co.za/trails/) put on a night stage race series there called the Stargazer in the late 2000s, it was an awesome concept. Was over a long weekend/3 evenings? we would race ~40km starting at dusk, and this would be on roadbooks with a bit of marking along the way (pre feasible gps. We would finish about 9pmish, have a lekker braai and kuier for a bit. The next day you could whatever at your leisure. the one was based in montagu town itself, the next at Gecko rock. There was private single track involved, and this has probably come and gone over the years. BUT, Does epic need manicured single track? I think these stages will see a bit of built trails, but the general jeep tracks there are naturally rocky and sketchy to keep you on your toes. I haven't looked at the race HQ or the routes but they have so many options to play with that I am certain there will be some exciting race routes.
  13. you can still go bikepacking for mahala! But if you want to do this bikepacking race, then you need to enter. This is what you get for $600 at the (sold out) Across Andes next month which is 5 days. but if you want to race for free - go find plenty here https://bikepacking.com/events/category/bikepacking-races/ (you might need to fly)
  14. https://www.3bo.mobi/ I might be missing the obvious here - what's stopping you from just removing the bottle cage bolts? Doesn;t take long to be a professional with an allen key. Carinus Lemmer, who once earned national colours for cycling. The turnaround time is deliberate, he adds. "They can’t remove the unit in 14 minutes, because the person who steals a bicycle is not a professional. Then they have to break it, or melt it or hit it with a hammer. That devalues the bicycle, which they don’t want.
  15. That's really funny. Part of me want's to apply for the finance option here just to deconstruct the silly numbers that would spit out - probably a balloon the size of TP's VO2max
  16. That's a good point. If the bike is worth R300k, but some knob with more rands than cents buys this for R400k without questioning it, then win win all round. What you guys think this is worth - wonder what starting price was too? https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/road-bikes/753577/collectors-item-giant-t-mobile-price-drop
  17. That's exactly how perfume sells, or other high end fashion. Got nothing to do with the input costs. We should call these Louis Vuitton bikes or something similarly ridiculous.
  18. uh mean you can get a set of 3 Lamborghinis in the same colour or 20 of these bikes? https://mybroadband.co.za/news/motoring/613836-supercars-and-houses-worth-r149-million-seized-in-r2-billion-tender-fraud-investigation.html
  19. ok, it includes wheels and bearings, so must be appropriate! picked up these rollerblades for my daughter - Salomon is a decent brand, but the ankle cuff plastic is deteriorating to the point of destruction on one already. SOOOOO, in the name of throwing good money and time after bad, looking at redoing them like so. https://www.instagram.com/p/CFqZtbkjUNg/?igsh=cTVrb3NmaGdxbzIx&fbclid=IwY2xjawNa965leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETF6TTlkNTZpNzJMM3pHdmxWAR6xPwc0UMIQpO4LbWpshjtoEnuvyTXBznsAmaWuOSYrQx6rMl2IRcT3GI_zHQ_aem_wQQCJgXbEwM3aR9v7bY8VA therefore, wondering if anyone has a donor rollerblade that is sitting around, and i will hack the cuffs out of them - these are size 7 but there can be wiggle room. not entirely sure how I will do the rivets to keep them flush, but thinking a chainring bolt set with washers could work. of course there is the bulletproof option. open to suggestions/FLAMES

ok, I'll bite. Through no fault of her own, Annika Langvad/(insert whoever is with) Spez ladies racing has basically dominated the opening stages and then the rest of the podium just watch their backs to stay on the podium. Orange jersey might go to some hotshot team on the prologue but the final winners seem to wear it all week. Sure there was the duct tape year that got fun, but the closest winning margin in the past ten years has been 8mins. Just done a scan through results, how many teams within 5 minutes/30 minutes from GC leader at end of race - this is going back to 2016 as Gunn Rita rode 2015 and kicked up a fuss from her well earned position as a respected and decorated racer. year:Male 5/30 - Female 5/30 2025: 1/3 : 0/1 2024: 0/4 : 0/1 2023: 2/2 : 0/0 2022:1/3 : 0/1 2021: 0/3: 0/0 2019: 0/3 : 0/0 2018 0/4: 0/0 2017:0/3 : 0/0 2016: 0/3 : 0/2 so ja. time to try something different - all power to them because it would have been much easier to keep the status quo as is.
  21. wow, well done for sticking to your Raleigh for all these years. I know you said you want to get something new (and you've earned it), but you miiiiiight find some real nice deals on so-called "obsolete" rim braked road bikes. now now now, lots of people will say you NEED disc brakes. Buuuuuut, given your criteria - there could be a decent argument to look at the fancy bikes these guys will discount because it's not disk braked. Getting a well specced 2018ish bike will still be a big upgrade from what you've been riding. Just quickly skimming through the filters here (I don't know your frame size) this is 2019 105 at R20k. https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/road-bikes/832610/norco-valence the R30k range you get some really nice bikes with Rim brakes. or, I'm talking complete total codswallop and you want to have something brand new, cool too.

I suppose so, but it's not what I said. "Equal prizemoney" is just short term window dressing, Elite ladies at ACE have had equal prizemoney/separate starts for 10 yrs now? There just isn't the depth of pro female mtb that can do this sort of thing. I'm not sure what it costs to get a pro team to Epic, but even the winning purse of R350k surely won't break even. The race entry fee is already more than 4th place at R85k. This is a much more positive move to make the ladies Elite race more exciting, maybe we will see it happening. I get a feeling that the massive strides in ladies pro cycling in recent years could have more of a knock on effect than anything done here.
  23. Bit dissapointing that he signs off with a DNF, but he will surely go down as one of our greats. Had a quick squizz now, but as some sort of metric here is a list of Grand tour appearances, could be missing on or two here.. Impey - 11 Hunter - 17 Meintjes - 20 It's a long long time ago now, but must have been when on the MTNQ yellow team at TdF in 2015 - there was a photo of the team bus with LM in the foreground, in focus with a huge expectant smile. He looked like he was 16 yrs old and the caption was: "best school outing EVER!" he even rode with this train for a year. https://www.instagram.com/p/BYtZJo3lrQx/ never forgetting this performance that really put him into the conversation, and I don't think anyone has come close since.

Equal prize money has done little to elevate the depth of the ladies field, but it's a headline grabber so will have to stay.
