  1. It shouldn’t. I use old tires on my trainer bike, on my snap, until they literally start falling apart, and have not experienced the issues you describe. I do check tire pressure before every ride and do a zwift spindown before every ride to try and keep things constant. Power variance seems to be within the 5% range claimed by Wahoo.
  2. Agreed, I have been enjoying the park a lot lately. The trails are looking great. But, the new drop off by the mess they are making with the dam is an accident waiting to happen, as there is no warning at all as you round the corner after the bridge. Also agree on the walkers and the off leash dogs, though I normally ride there during the week, when the golfers and I usually have the place to ourselves.
  3. *lecture warning* You have had the trauma of the crash and broken bones. Then the trauma of the orthopod taking power tools to your hip and femur. So, your focus right now should not be on your fitness at all, just on rest (you need afternoon naps), good nutrition, and recovering. Forget about the bike for now entirely, you will have plenty time to ride again. Your body is recovering from a major ordeal. Let it. I got back on my trainer for short rides just 2 weeks after my hip replacement, and I was obsessed with doing walks on my crutches, like 2 or 3km. And I did the physio’s regime to excess, childishly thinking I would recover quicker. In retrospect, it was all insane, and it just set my recovery back. It took 6 months before I felt human again, because my premature activities caused iliopsoas tendonitis 6 weeks post op. It was painful and debilitating, and screwed up what would have otherwise been a flawless recovery. I was stupid. So, its a case of do as I say, not as I do. A hip replacement is a major op, and although it has a fantastic success rate, you need to respect the enormity of what your body has been through. And the water bottle and the Garmin on that walker suggest that you’re being at least as stupid as I was. They also suggest that you will pay no heed to my unsolicited advice. Ah well, I tried. Anyway, the good news is that 2 years post op, and I am whole again, after limping around in hip pain for a couple years. I ride about or 4 or 5 times a week (sometimes less depending on work and laziness factors), a lot indoors, but also on the road and on easy non technical mountain biking trails. But, I know that if I come off and break my operated hip or leg, I am in serious trouble. Hence I am totally risk averse, and still feel safest on my trainer. On the road, I mainly ride alone or in small trusted groups, and I walk even the mildest of humps on the trails. But, I cherish every ride and every walk I do. Please post an x ray if you have one. I wish you a full and complete recovery. And may you ride safe and pain free for all of your days.
  4. Yesterday afternoon I lost a Nespresso coffee cup, which fell off my bike's rear cage - probably on the long descent, but it could have been anywhere on the trails I guess . It has sentimental value to me. If anyone sees it, please pick it up and let me know? many thanks. Greatly appreciated.
  5. Sorry I don’t know the answer, but I just wanted to say that ladies must only ride the area in big groups and armed with plenty pepper spray.
  6. My. What do ethical hackers earn? I hacked my wife’s Pinterest once when she got locked out. Anyway, the permutations between 2 kids and 2 cats weren’t easy, so I’m damn good. And ethical. Please consider this my cv [emoji23]
  7. Yes, Did a little stroll the other day and it told me I had about 1900 metres elevation. There was a recent firmware update. I wonder if that introduced the issue?
  8. Well Nerd, i set out from my humble abode yesterday, Eddie’s map burned into my memory, like person woman man camera tv, determined to find your place and acquire a cup of your hopefully covid free coffee. This proved more difficult than i thought. 400 metres into the ride, my rear derailleur broke. This did not deter me. I walked home, cleats crunching, swapped bikes and set off again. As i entered greenside my cleats started squeeking like a pig going to the slaughter. Its so cruel. Anyway, this did not deter me. Then I stopped and saw my rear was going flat, and the tire was in fact shot. This did not deter me. No. I was going to Emmarentia to meet Nerd, shhot the ****, and have a stupendous cuppacino, and not even hell freezing over was gonna stop me. As I crossed the dam wall, I should have been concentrating on the magnificent beauty of that large body of water, but instead I used what was left of my trump type cognitive function to engage my olfactory senses, to pick up the scent of your coffee. Zip. I starting getting worried that i have covid, though my lung function still seemed ok. Then, imagine my surprise at arriving at the appointed address only to find no nerd, no coffee. I slugged down my disappointment along with 100 ml USN, and started the lonely false flat up Thomas Bowler. At Richmond I stopped for coffee at my usual haunt, taking like 100 pics for posterity like I had just arrived in Acapulco. Then I set off again, passing all the usual landmarks, including Milpark hospital and i felt for all the patients in it. It was calm and quiet outside which got me wondering about the frenetic horror going on inside the icu. No nerd or his coffee, but what an awesome outing it was.
  9. They are still down. if its true that they have been hacked, it is bad form that they have a banner up depicting that they are down for maintenance. And if that’s true, their maintenance guys are freaking slow. Either way, they should be transparent. We have paid for our multiple devices, and still we are the product. And if our data has indeed been compromised, this is a lot more serious than 300 vitality points, or no strava kudos today. Aside from login data, Connect knows where everyone lives, where we ride, run, holiday etc. When they come back up, Strave is gonna be bombarded.
  10. My theory. They have an algorithm which intuitively knows which tile most people are likely to pick, so those tiles are devalued. Bastids. My workaround. 1. Shut eyes superglue tight; 2. Twirl index finger anti clocwise at cadence over 120 rpm; 3. Strike screen when finger hits mach 1; 4. Kaboom. I got a successive 250 and a 70 after weeks of 50’s. Science is a wonderful thing.
  11. Just how the superior cyclist mask thread morphed into the genealogy of your dynasty is totally beyond me, but I nevertheless remain riveted.
  12. Lemme go out on a limb and take a take wild guess here. *If* he did cycle he is the kinda guy who would ride an ebike, but still would wheelsuck without taking his turn at the front, never greet, anti-masker, spew gu wrappers onto the road @ 1 / 3.75km, prob has a MAGA sticker on his 1972 Ford Fairmont bumper? But you tell yourself its ok cos you’re only related to him on your great aunt’s side in the 11th degree of consanguinity.
  13. Thank you, but I wouldn’t dare. I think that sumbitch could unseam me from the nave to the chops (ala Macbeth) with just one carefully chosen syllable from the mortifying arsenal comprising the lexicon of Thor Buttox. [emoji23] (I bet he writes op eds for the New York times or maybe some zany oh so cerebral blog. Lol, maybe Huisgenoot?)
  14. It seems the intractable intransigent non mask wearing aholes are not only cyclists. https://twitter.com/semperdiced/status/1271621605903331328?s=21
  15. Rip to the fallen, condolences to the family. no words . Death would be too lenient a punishment for this drunk; I hope he suffers every single day for the rest of his life.
  16. Yes, there was this Belgian study which found that the increase in viral shedding by hard breathing of runners and cyclists under exertion required much more “social distance” than under normal conditions. https://medium.com/@jurgenthoelen/belgian-dutch-study-why-in-times-of-covid-19-you-can-not-walk-run-bike-close-to-each-other-a5df19c77d08 But it has kinda been debunked —->> https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2020/4/24/21233226/coronavirus-runners-cyclists-airborne-infectious-dose Which, of course, by no means excuses riding without one. But it does give me enough comfort to ride my bike. Here is another great article on how to identify and ameliorate risk —->> https://www.erinbromage.com/post/the-risks-know-them-avoid-them
  17. I find the viewpoint expressed in this particular post offensive, deliberately incendiary, insensitive, and callous. It borders on being sociopathic. The content conveys more to me about the author than he perhaps intended. On a more positive note, most cyclists I encountered today (in Joburg)were masked, and considerate, and I did not feel vulnerable at any time. Runners are another story, but we kept our distance from them. @Mamil. I understand where you’re coming from, and support your stance.

  19. Has anyone actually ridden at Modders since they re-opened? Can we get a report back on the ride-ability of the trails, and the quality of the directional arrow signage?
  20. This morning there were so many people out riding, running and walking it was ridiculous. Hopefully, this stops when the 3 hour Curfew goes. I found myself feeling vulnerable when: Stopped at robots; everyone just stopped together, zero social distancing even though most seemed to keep distance while on the move. And some kept masks on their chin [emoji2959]. Difficult \ impossible to get out of this situation, when suddenly there’re 3 people stopped alongside you, at busy red robot where you cant just go through. Overtaking or being overtaken on a climb, while both breathing really hard. That all said, here is an interesting article which debunks the Belgian study about the heightened risks of cycling and running. https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/2020/4/24/21233226/coronavirus-runners-cyclists-airborne-infectious-dose
