  1. until you use them on your mtb and your pedals hit a rock !
  2. Random adjustments are just that. a mate was on the front of a tandem yet had a finish time some 30 seconds behind his partner...try working that one out!
  3. jeez, can't remember but the jeep track/concrete path descent in the 'Giants MTB' is pretty damn quick.
  4. Done both. Dude, Comrades is much tougher on the mind & body.
  5. He could have been commuting from Clermont to Cowies Hill, where there are plenty of guard huts or to visit his wife/girlfriend who works ....... We also don't know if there were any other factors in play. Maybe the security guard had been drinking/smoking, maybe he had taken a blow to the head and had pre-existing concussion, maybe he had bad eyesight & struggled to see at night or even a pre-existing blood clot....too many unknowns. It was an accident...with the most unfortunate result.
  6. Look, I don't know who, if anyone is to blame. The likelihood is that there was a small bunch of runners, probably taking up a little more of the road but being time trial night I'm sure that most of the runners would have had some sort of reflective clothing/belt. However for it to be reflective you need to shine a light onto it. If the cyclist (security guard) did not have a light then the reflective material would not work. Coupled by the fact that security guards typically wear dark clothing the chances are the runner would not of seen him until quite late.
  7. My understanding is that you can probably bring in a complete bike, minus the wheels and have it cleared as bike parts. The wheels must arrive on a different vessel and not a different shipment on the same vessel.
  8. If you use the bicycle parts customs code (it is a hub)then you would only pay the 14% VAT and associated cleaning fees.
  9. You will need to provide a Certificate or Origin (COO) to use this rate. I once asked CRC if they could provide a COO for a Cube bike. They said that they could not. I guess it's all made in the east and only assembled in the EU.
  10. Apparently the cyclist dies of his injuries on Friday morning. The accident happened about 500m into the Chiltern time trial course on time trial night. This road is narrow and has no verge and as per usual the runners run contra-flow. The cyclist had passed some faster runners already when the accident occurred. The runner apparently did have lights/reflective bands/material. The cyclist was not wearing a helmet nor did he have any lights. The runner is also a cyclist who has previously had an accident where he went left, the other person went right, so he went right and then that person went left so this time he decided to stand still. It appears, if there were no pre-existing conditions that could have been affecting the cyclist, that where/how he hit his head caused the trauma. It also took the emergency services the best part of an hour to arrive. RIP dude.
  11. have spoken to someone but details are sketchy. It appears that the runner/s did not see him (no light - dark clothing). It was mentioned that possibly he impaled himself on the handlebar when he fell.
  12. I think you mean chiltern running club. I know a few folk there. will see if I can find any more info.
  13. what town/city of what country are you in?
  14. Road running races are organised by clubs and volunteers. MTB races are organised by Professionals making a living from what they do. Road Running races make use of public roads. MTB races use private land (mostly) & often have to use labour to cut single track, build bridges etc Road Running races require very little (if any at all) medical support. MTB races require medical personal on site, sometimes more than 1 team. Unless you can find land that you don't need to maintain (ie: singletrack/bridges etc) and the MTB community adopt the club scenario as in running to organise the events you have to pay someone to do it. To be honest if you analysed the MTB community (and some have) you will find it is probably the one sport in South Africa which has the most disposable income. Take a look around at the next race you attend. More than most of the vehicles will be 4x4's or large SUV's costing 300K +, add a bike carrier at an ave of 2K plus the bike at 15K and added cost of say 5k for shorts, shirt, shoes, helmet etc you have a wealthy mix of individuals who essentially don't want to have to spend their time organising events, building bridges or clearing single track. They would just simply rather pay someone else to do it.
  15. maybe try riding in front of your mates so they eat your dust instead of you swallowing theirs
  16. try eating a bowl of Future life (GI of 55), although you should mix it with water, not milk.
  17. Maybe it's worth writing (registered mail) to the prosecutor. Explain your situation and that you would like to save both of you time but you feel that the fine was excessive stating your reasons etc bla bla bla. The worst is he will say no and tell you to pay or appear.
  18. Not sure if this is correct or not someone (can't remember who) once told me to always ride the smallest frame you can fit on as the smaller the frame the stiffer it will be. Maybe some hubbers could confirm / denounce this theory ?
  19. Scott Scale 40 is the last before a carbon frame but it's the same frame as the 70. everything else differs.
  20. You will not get a Spectra for under 8K. Here are some approximate prices. Scott Scale 60 – R10 399 Merida TFS 800 – R8 199 Merida TSF 1000 – R9 999 Silverback Spectra – R11 199 You might consider the Scott Scale 70. It will be around 8K and the frame is very up-gradable. The same frame is used on the Scale 40/50/60/70.
  21. If you want to try and drop your RHR further you probably need to start doing some hill repeats and interval training. But as everyone else has said it's mostly abt genetics.
  22. The one opening in the Westville mall could actually do quite well, especially with the VA gym being there and the huge amount of foot traffic it generates. It's also easier to drop it off there for a service than trying to get in/out of the pavilion.
  23. Does the upper Highway area have enough cyclists to support 6 shops ? I hope so as it seems to keep the prices quite competitive. 1) Specialized store in Waterfall 2) Bring-It-on in Kloof 3) Cycle Logic in Gillitts (old Harley shop) 4) Marty's Cycles (Heritage Market) 5) Mavericks in Hillcrest 6) Cycle Lab in Hillcrest.
  24. Try former SA Triathlete / Du-athlete Donovan van Gelder @ www.cybercoach.co.za
