  1. I agree with Mampara, you will be more than happy with V brakes and can rather use the extra money on other things like upgraded components/ clothes/ shoes, etc. Deore is OK, don't go anything lower than this. Look for an air shock rather than a coil shock (in my opinion). P.S. Hydraulic brakes will give better braking power as it increases your ability to transfer power to the brake. On top of that, welcome! If you live in Pta or Jhb, you will find a whole bunch of MTBers to ride with!
  2. Thyolo, I rode a MTB race yesterday and then went to ride with my friends in groenkloof after, so you're not alone with being a bit touched. What I meant was that we might've been more accomodating...

    The Argus

I can't relate regarding cycling sites, but I nearly killed someone trying to order an iPod Nano with my ebucks. Damn site kicked me out every time I clicked to the next screen (page can't be found cr@p). Eventually succeeded (so next race you must give me a soundtrack too DR!)
  4. Mazz tazz, posting the same "epiphany" into every random thread you come across to increase your post count is not clever it's irritating. If you'd at least posted different enlightening messages, we might've just written you off as a bit strange...

    Bar Ends

Er hrrrm... just cutting short these continuing efforts to unite single cyclists across Cape Town by answering The Thug's question: Geoff the Aussie in his usual style explains that bar ends were designed when people in white socks first started taking road bikes with skinny motorbike tyres down mountains. The frames were road bikes, so the top tubes were too short. To handle the bikes better, they put bar ends on. As soon as bikes started beng designed with correct geometry, they no longer needed bar ends. He also pointed out that you cannot shift or brake from bar ends. When I asked about bar ends for a different ride position, he said if your bike was set up correctly, you don't need different ride positions, and even in endurance racing, you may need to brake suddenly. Anyway, that plus my 2 falls convinced me.
  7. Shameless plug!
  8. Sounds like the Thug has no fear of lightning or storm water drains! we still rode close to 20km, so not all bad. And my bike is not only wet, it's dirty, sob! So, the Thug, did you do an hour on the road at 5am this morning, I think not (Michelle wins the non-woosie award!!)!
  9. It was a dark and stormy night... and I found myself wondering why I had travelled from Weltevreden Park to Waterkloof in Pretoria to ride... in the dark... offroad.. in the rain! <?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Well, any plan that gets made at the last minute has a high potential for things to go wrong. Mine started when I left the house far too late to reach Waterkloof Ridge by 7pm for the Dark 'n Dirty ride. With some low level flying and some frantic calls to Dirt Rider, I managed to delay the kickoff of the ride until I got there. And when I screeched into the parking lot sideways (!), my eyes were assaulted by the sight of 35 riders, all kitted out in lights and stupid grins! This must be a new record for turnout at a D n D?! So with such large numbers, we had to split into two groups. I was in the first group (not necessarily the fast group!), and we set off. We bombed down to the singletrack and quickly worked our way up to the paths running next to the airbase. It was about here that I realised how menacing the sky was looking? True to it?s word, those menacing clouds promptly started raining on us! Not to be outdone, or accused of being roadie cissies, we carried on. But shortly after passing through the tunnel, the sky gods started throwing lightning at us! After a quick pow-wow, where we all agreed that avoiding being struck by lightning wasn?t cissy behaviour, we retreated to under the bridge? or should I say storm water drain! We hid out in the tunnel for a while, trying not to notice the ?present? that had been left by the previous occupant. We were all nervously reminiscing all those storm water drowning stories as the water level (not so) slowly rose. Like people running for our lives, we reached a point of mass hysteria and bolted back to the garage where the marginally dryer second group awaited! We again had a group discussion and talk of turning back for hot pizza and fortified hot chocolate was quickly squashed. We?re mountain bikers remember, nothing stops us from riding! So in an effort to drag some fun out of this evening, we set off on a round trip of the airforce base. Amazingly, we only had one puncture, and despite swimming through sections of the path (!), we arrived back at Waterkloof with a full complement of riders, no-one lost. Only 6 intrepid riders stayed for the promised pizza and hot chocolate (made the old way?). Amazingly, all 3 men had packed dry clothes and none of the women! Has the Age of Enlightenment happened? Jan kindly brought his blankie and showed remarkable restraint when he was mobbed by Cat-i and myself! There was talk of three dirty women jumping the men and stripping off their clothes (in a public place nogal!) but this never materialised (although we may have fueled the dreams of many a young man!). At a respectful hour, we all said our goodbyes and drove off into the darkness, knowing that we had just spent our evening having the most fun that it is possible to have on a Thursday night in <?:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Pretoria!
  10. Great to meet you last night! I will post a ride report (in English I'm afraid) for the "fast" group a bit later...
  11. OMG
  12. Sorry babes, taking my sparkling clean Scott and my roadie partner to Logwood for a play session. I'm trying to bring him to the Dark Side!!

Are any goats involved? Just kidding, been reading Fatcyclist's (www.fatcyclist.com) plan to beat Lance! Erm, you still have to explain though!

    Sorry oom H

    Very pretty
  16. Hehehe, we'll get you back on the MTB nice and slow, and work up to the crazy stuff! Erm, the bruise is now going through all shades of yellow, purple and green, and it's not as sore any more. I guess I have to learn to stop falling off! The Thug, I'm pulling your leg, I know exactly how wrong that could go, but in our defense, we did tell you there was a sand/ water bar at the bottom of the hill!! (P.S. it nearly caught me out as well!)
  17. He he! Chilli, I think I took the cake with my fall on the D n D, or maybe The Thug with his black eye from our non-technical ride yesterday? I also wish I was outside playing instead of insde pretending to work!

    Broken Spokes

epoh, I'm sorry to hear all the bad luck. Maybe you are getting it all out the way early on in the year and the rest of the year will be fab? I would say swap from road to MTB, but with that luck...!!

    Bar Ends

I have had bar ends but was recently convinced to get rid of them. First was when they hooked on an exit chute at Logwood and threw me off. Then they hooked a long weed thingie at Northern Farm and I bar endo'ed again. Then I attended Geoff's skills clinic (I'm starting to sound like that chick about band camp aren't I?!), and he made for a convincing argument. so now, no more bar ends!

    Hello

Welcome laney. Depending on where you live in Gauteng, there are a number of us Hubbers on MTB's here and we get together for rides fairly often. Look at some of the old posts under Training for some of our group rides. I've just done the Beginners Skills Clinic at Logwood and it helped me tremendously. Also, don't be afraid to stay on the Green routes at Logwood for a while, a Green route is usually more technical than most stuff you will ride elsewhere. Other places to ride: Braamfontein Spruit (just make sure you're riding with others) Northern Farm Groenkloof and Fountains in Pta. More advice, find a club that goes MTBing in an area near you. There are a couple, Flatdogs, Dark n Dirty, Rockhoppers, amongst others. Mostly, enjoy!
  21. No clue, good luck. try their website for technical info?
  22. Hehehe! Mampara, a word of advice, BBB makes a 'toothbrush' which comes in very useful for cleaning hard to reach places, and an investment in a Powerlink goes a long way towards keeping your chain clean!
  23. Phew good luck! I know a friend of mine was out from Canada and his old bike developed bad shifting. The LBS wouldn't even attempt to open it, told him straight out to replace. He decided he wasn't here for long enough to warrant the cost, so he retro fitted a downtube shifter!!
  24. In case we forget, happy birthday Beee!!!
  25. Back to the Ultegra and Dura Ace question... RATHER BUY A MOUNTAIN BIKE!!! OK, now that I've got that out my system...
