  1. I disagree. Disks "bite" properly and do not fade in wet and mud. IMHO: they are a hell of a lot safer... I am glad you highlighted the "usually". It's not the "usually" bits I rely on my disks for. It's the "unusual" ones...
  2. My tuppence: the only place for mechanical disks is on a tandem on the road. They work well there, but off road you can forget it...
  3. Yep. I had a chat to the Parkview Reservists on Tuesday and they asked for more information. I have obtained statements from both guys. The attacks were exactly the same (except the second had 4 guys), but the m.o.'s were carbon copies. Both happened around the same time at exactly the same spot - Sunday morning, single rider at about 07:00. One suspect attacked both with a cement/asbestos plank and threatened them with a knife while the others took the goods. Here's the google maps link: http://maps.google.c...106.17,,0,-0.94 I have collated this and have passed it onto the Parkview Reservsts who will hopefully get back to me with a plan of action from here.
  4. Also available through Cape Union Mart. Do you have them in Zilleville?
  5. A lot of places won't do that unless you have the till slip. What's the fuss?
  6. Thanks guys! Just received my Ergo2s today!!!
  7. Get real. It's run by farmers. Not a frikkin' IT shop. Stop whingeing, go and enjoy the ride...
  8. If that is in your policy, then they are correct. It's the same for the difference between housebreaking and theft. One has forcible entry, the other not. It's a bummer...
  9. Wow. P.o.'d isn't the word for your state! What type of morons think they can ride like this!? Not cool...
  10. Damn. sorry to hear. With the usual SA placation: I'm glad you're OK. So it was further up towards the B/Herzog park side? A mate of mine (Ralph) called me and gave me the details - he apparently met you and asked me to pass on the warning. As for your bike, it's probably in Hillbrow (that's where most of the muggers come from on that side). What bike was it? Have you reported the incident? Do you have a description of the bastards? I'm having a meeting with the Parkview Reservists tomorrow to try and hatch a plan to get these guys (I can't go out and do it myself as I retired from the Reservists last year). I'll let you know what transpires. I'm quite worried as I ride this section every week with my kids...
  11. It will be WITH the police (Parkview Reservists), but thanks for the concern!
  12. My neighbour was mugged two weeks ago on Rustenburg Road between Congo and Carlow Roads in Auckland Park just below the BP garage two weeks ago by three guys armed with knives. He was riding by himself. I have just been told of another incident this morning. A single rider was again attacked by a group of two or three men armed with knives at 07:20 this morning and his cellphone, etc. and bike taken. It looks like this is a gang now operating in the area and since this road is highly used by cyclists is a worrying problem. Even more so as it is in a densely populated, urban area. A couple of us will be riding it alone (with our two friends Smith & Wesson on standby) to see if we can find these ****ers... Please be careful guys!
  13. For a REAL rush take a cyclocross bike and do the black routes... Phew...
  14. Normally for Shimano you just use the one spacer that comes with the cassette. I've never seen two... Again for Shimano, the lockring says it should be torqued to 40Nm.
  15. You'll note that I didn't explicitly state that! I gather it's a sort of rule of thumb - tighter, more technical courses suit the 26ers and the longer, less technical ones the 29ers. I have heard this is why 29ers are not so popular in Europe - the courses are different... But at the end of the day it's up to the rider to decide.
  16. I reckon that on any stage race to rely on a drink before breakfast is daft. Hydration should be a continuous process so why the drink before breakfast? Have a good meal and a drink! You need the fluids and the fuel...
  17. IANAE but I think it's a case of the best tool for the job. On a tight XCO course I believe a 26er is better, but on a marathon 29ers have the edge. A simplistic view, as a lot of other factors must come into play...
  18. Meyerton? It'll be like home! Isn't it in Midvaal? Run by the party of Saint Helen of Cape Town? Having said that I hope all you lot will be out voting on the 18th of May
  19. You can't claim from the guy because he is covered by the RAF. Go to one of the lawyers who specialise in road claims. You'll have to fill in some forms, get your medical report and bills with the accident report number and wait a year or so. You'll then get an amount of which the lawyer will keep 25%. Tedious, but painless. I made a claim for 6k and got about 4k out. Better than nothing...
  20. I've done it solo a couple of times and once during the Sani Transfrontier. No problems. Take your passport - the Lesotho post let me through without looking at it, but the SA post did. Depending on when you're going make sure you have some decent clothing. The second time I nearly died of cold on the descent during a rain storm at about 4degC...
  21. Sorry I meant CRC, but I don't know how to change the topic ...
  22. I saw this the other day, but have only now had the opportunity to post: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/03/17/cc_fraud_follows_bike_store_purchases/
  23. TNT1, confirms my report. :-( Much sadness. Thoughts and wishes to his family and friends. Go well, Allistair...
  24. Don't worry. It's a typical BigH superior-than-thou comment. Just pray he doesn't start cyber-stalking you...!
