  1. Do you think this might qualify as fear mongering?
  2. Goodbadugly

    Maxxis

    They look rather similar...
  3. Common sense not being that common?
  4. I have seen a few on the internet (like this one)http://www.syntace.com/index.cfm?pid=3&pk=2033 I have not ridden one. I like the Thomson setback posts.
  5. None at all. "Feel" and vibration dampening: Very subjective.
  6. https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/138697-typical-carbon-repair/page__hl__carbon
  7. Take a stroll from Jongensfontein to Stilbaai along the beach. Will take you 2:30ish. We did it with the kids during the December holidays.
  8. I was there last year. No real mtb routes as far as I know. Only a shortish climb to a vantage point and tar roads.
  9. Always choose the one with the better fork.
  10.
  11. Neither 240s nor 350 dt swiss hubs have pawls. They have clutch mechs. The 370 does have pawls. Consider the 370 as an entry level hub.
  12. Have we cyclists gone soft? A few years ago everybody did the Epic on a 26" hardtails with 80mm forks...
  13. I would replace as the chain and the jockey wheels. See how it runs. Then replace the rest as needed.
  14. New or very close to new.
  15. Likewise. I am with Christie I really cannot see the reasoning behind the 1x set-ups. I tried 2X10. I found it inadequate. 'Regressing' back to a 3x setup. 3X9 that is. (I tried the X0 10 speed setup. But the X0 9 speed was just better. IMO) I just love the wide range it offers. I see 100 reasons why front derailleurs are diabolic on the internet. Many of these reasons are just 'copy and paste' reasons. Pro's with >22 hours of training/week ride 1X11. They have fat percentages in the single figure range. They say 1x11 is Heaven sent. So that is why 1X10 is ideal for Mr Weekend Worrier with 4 hours/week training? Mr Weekender with his BMI of 29.7 climbing 300m/week. Maybe it is just that people don't really climb mountains? I see Fortuners (4x4) all around me. I see thousands of Discoveries. I see millions of 4x4 D/C bakkies. Why do these okes drive around on tarmac with these cars? Maybe they will need it when they go to Xai-xai. Engines that go faster uphill if you just step on the gas. And they take a looong time to get tired. Back to the mtb okes. They need LESS gears. Mtb's that were built to go off road. To go anywhere. Powered by legs that tire and run out of steam. Sometimes rather quick. Imo.
  16. How tough? Remember there are only 3 places on the podium. Unlimited places in the DNF category.
  17. Loosen the 2 bolts on the sides of stem before you tighten the top one. Then tighten the side bolts again. Also check if the steerer tube is not too long. When you take the top cap off, the steerer should be about 3 mm shorter. If not, try putting a spacer between the top of the stem and the top cap.
  18. Pack some cash. For the beer tent/chill zone For the chips and burgers you buy from the tannies. I reckon R500 will cover the week.
  19. Why not just ride the wheels you have got?
  20. Check it. A few months ago I removed the top of my plaasbakkie engine. I had it skimmed and pressure checked. I Checked the torque specs. 88nm. After torquing it, I filled the engine with oil and water. And started the engine. Only to find that the new Payen gasket was leaking from everywhere. So I phoned the guy who did the skimming and k@kked him out for his poor skimming job. I took the top back. Only for him to show me the top WAS flat So it had to be a defective gasket... I bought a new gasket and assembled the whole thing again. And torqued it to 88nm. Correct sequence, new bolts and all. And filled it with water and oil again. I stared it up again. Water coming from the sides of the engine. Spluttering. I then got another torque wrench. Needless to say, the bolts moved another 180 deg. And the problem was solved...
