  1. I commuted on the Gautrain with my bike for 18 months 2011-2012 I had to pack my bike into an enclosed bag - front wheel off and handlebars turned. Once on the train I had to stand in the doorway as there was no room anywhere else . Luckily I travelled counterflow and I was the only one with a bike The places where one can “park” a bike at the stations offer little or no security. The one at Sandton was the most vulnerable in my view
  2. The polio vaccine was rolled out 6 months after I got hit by the virus . I was lucky in that I had it mildly. I still ended up with a thinner , shorter right leg and arm. So I will not be an anti COVID vaccine advocate.
  3. Solution is to act like its a single speed "race". Have a few beers beforehand and then 5 tequila shots during the loop. As a non drinker I experienced Red Barn this way during the 2019 Singlespeed "Champs".
  4. Mike lives in Cape Town and I have seen photos of his awesome bike tool shadow board. Maybe he is still keeping his hand in?
  5. I made the same comment to my wife yesterday. The period of most rain and growth coincides with the annual leave period of the workers.A couple of places that were tricky (a little blind riding) but a couple days with bush cutters and it will be fine again. I avoided the 1st section of reeds before the little dam as it was quite muddy and then there was one other muddy section along a fence
  6. One weekend when we are staying in Somerset West can we come through to ride these trails with you?
  7. I have had to cancel two trips to Europe this year to visit my daughter. At least I only have 4 more days of work until my leave starts. And I am in my Somerset West apartment for two weeks and our road bikes arrive tomorrow. . MTB bikes are already here.
  8. Thieves have no scruples. One of my relatives committed suicide. He went to a secluded spot in his car and shot himself. When his body was eventually discovered thieves had stripped him and taken wallet, gun and phone. Another friend and his son were killed in a single vehicle accident. When their bodies were found o thieves had stripped the bodies and stolen everything they could out of the wrecked car.
  9. As a longtime member I am always amazed at the wide range of interests and knowledge that the hubbers have outside of cycling. I doubt that I can ask for information on any subject that one or more hubbers will not have expert knowledge of . This is one of the attractions for me. Another aspect that I enjoy is the sense of community goodwill where we will help others in need (even complete internet strangers) when asked to. I just did a quick count and have bought 11 bikes and other goodies and sold 6 bikes via the classifieds.over the years. So this particular forum works for me. While my post count suggests I am not an active poster I do spend at least an hour a day reading topics that interest me and checking the classifieds for interesting sales items. ( n+1 is a real itch)
  10. We live near Flamingo Shopping center and so all our rides into Modderfontein Nature Reserve bypass the Food Market and go straight to a Flamingo coffee shop. There is a choice of 3. Four if you count the one inside the Shell garage
  11. Yesterday it was the other around for our bikes. We packed them into boxes in Johannesburg because they are “emigrating” to our part time home in Somerset West. Should here later this week Looking at Dale’s photos made us decide that riding road bikes in the Cape is much more enjoyable than in Johannesburg

    The Munga 2020

I have heard comments that it is only broken in after 100 000kms
  13. Any idea of the weight of this frame compared to the STR? I have the STR
  14. In my new life as a digital nomad ( I am in Somerset West for two weeks) I am going to the opening of the new Conrad Scholtz trails at Ernie Els vineyard on Saturday and the Murati Trails on Sunday.
  15. We tried to squeeze in a ride between the rain in Somerset West yesterday morning. Just got to the turn around point in Sir Louwry's village when we got hit by a downpour.

    Friday night Crits

I used to enjoy these even though I got lapped many times. It was just up the road from my house so I could stop off on my way home from work , "race" for one hour and then be home within 5 minutes.
  17. I want to relocate my two road bikes down to Cape Town from Johannesburg. Is the best way to take them with me as extra luggage when I fly or use a courier company to transport them? And if a courier company , which one?
  18. My 21year old nephew fall off his skateboard and broke his elbow badly enough to need plates and screws. It is his first injury that needd a doctor. My brother and I have had a combined total of more than 80 visits to hospitals for various sports injuries. I was just commenting to my siblings that the long term effects of all these is starting to manifest themselves. My brother will need a hip replacement sometime . I am shorter because of a compressed vertebrae crash, have many crooked fingers and a hip that has suffered 3 big injuries.
  19. What about Doreen Road from Hendrick Potgieter ( Roodepoort)? I dont have the ascent but it is 2kms long and in the pre strava days I recorded 92km/hr going down it.

    RIFLE

I really struggled with the R1 because the stock was too long for me to get comfortable during basics. After I spent 18 months on the border with lots of ammo I got reasonable proficient. Loved full auto. However on my camps the R4 was available and this suited me much better.
  21. I have never seen those rooi hartebees at Modderfontein
  22. I made a point of going to Modderfontein this morning and stopping where I could see the animals . Maybe for the last time ???? We took one of my brother’s cycling mates from UK to Modderfontein last year and the animal sighting plus all the white storks was the highlight of his ride
  23. On another Modderfontein Nature Reserve Facebook page it says park will be closed Monday to Wednesday 24-26 August for game management.
  24. I see that I am not allowed to enter because of my age. I guess it works both ways as I will be encouraged to work from home at least until the end of the year.
