  1. this is the flaw in their whole strategy, it doesn't account for real athletes... Run an 18min 5km run any day of the week and get 0 points, walk that 5km in an hour as parkrun on saturday and get 300. Ironman is 9000 points, a 100 mile trail run gets you a marathons worth. Ironman is 9000 points, an adventure race is 0 points because it is 'not healthy'
  2. couple of ugga duggas on the impact driver?
  3. Definitely a lot to figure out, I think finishing a marathon is easy enough, you can suffer that, but racing on flat tapped at max is a very different beast. I also think there is a time and a place for marathons and we should all spend a lot more time on flat out pace. The other thing I learned is to wear shoes all the time in the lead up to a race, especially when you are fumbling around in the dark early mornings around shower corners. This is too true, but eff there is no other way to look at it. Got to find the positive somewhere or it is depressing watching so much time/kms run go to a ball of sh...t because your toe looks like a strangled smurf after every run or even walking to far on the farm...
  4. eish, I pulled the plug on the comrades plans yesterday. Toe/foot keeps swelling up after I run. Haven't run in over a week and it is still tender walking barefoot. Maybe running a marathon on a stuffed toe was not the best life decision. Lesson learned, there is always next year. Plus side is that I had my first proper swim in 5 years this morning.
  5. a big kicker as well on gravel is the gearing, much broader options
  6. 100%, you need all 4 on gravel and you need to cherry pick the event, but I think for a 120 you will easy get away with it
  7. honestly get a good movie or series going and I will sit pedaling for hours
  8. I still believe that ARWC would have been faster on a gravel bike. Would have lost some time over suurberg and coming out of baviaanskloof. But you would have made up huge time the rest of it.
  9. zwift and netflix/youtube
  10. what is a valve core spanner? I thought that is what an index finger and thumb is for... HTFU
  11. At some stage that bearing siezed and then it wore out where the bearing seats. In machinery you would just weld and line bore that hole to size again. I wonder if there is a similar technique with carbon fiber resin
  12. I also live rurally, nearest tar is a good few km away. I borrowed my godfathers gravel bike in Dec for a test ride in our area. I did a big dirt road loop that I always do on the mtb and I was sold. This year I am focusing on running, but at the end of the year I will definitely be investing in a gravel bike.
  13. Glad to hear you are running pain free again and still in it. That is all that matters... I have hit a major stumbling block my side, what was a fifty shades of blue pinky toe the week before my qualifier, is now 3 weeks later fifty shades of blue and yellow foot still 3 weeks later. I have pretty much stopped running the last 2 weeks, will see how it feels moving forward, Comrades might just be a suffer fest this year.
  14. I know of 2 or 3 who were early on the Gravel wave, but the newer gravel bikes offer more clearance so you can go wider on the tires and they have changed just so they can go with wider tires for more rugged roads/conditions.
  15. No I do see huge value in 3d printing and certain things made from 3d printers. But there is a time and a place for a 3d printed plastic part, and then there is a place to take out a welder and grinder and do it with steel/aluminum. One of my favorite gadgets is a little 3d printed dust catcher for when you drill holes in walls, I have 3 different sized ones and they are perfect for it. I have also printed a few cones to turn 40 litre buckets into fly traps on the farm. But when you have 10kg of bike(and many thousand rands) mounted with plastic and you have an accident, it won't be fun having that bike come join you in the front seat because the mount is made of plastic. That is more the concern I had with the above.
  16. How do you know someone has done ironman, epic, sani2sea, went to a midlands boarding school, lives in the cape or does crossfit? They will tell you sometime in the first 5 mins of conversation...
  17. it won't end up looking like this... Also I am more of a fan of this look:
  18. All this makes me think is that more people need to learn how to weld. Take 4 offcuts of 5mm flat bar cut with a grinder, weld them together and drill the appropriate holes and you have a similar mount for next to nothing cost wise...
  19. I had similar thoughts and beliefs but Stans Crests are only rated to 2,5 bar for a 2,5 tyre, 2,6 bar for a 2,2 tyre. 10% error in the gauge will leave you with ears ringing for days, sealant up your nose and in your eyes, 1 blown out rim bent spokes and a hell of a mess to clean up. The only fun part was realising all the petrol attendants had hit the deck with the explosion.
  20. I used to do the same until I blew the tyre off the rim in the back of the car at a petrol station because the gauge was wrong. There is a clean BMW out there with a new owner who will no doubt keep finding random bits of dried sealant all over the car... Bottom line don't trust a petrol station pump. DO this test, Drive petrol station to petrol station checking your car tyre pressures. You will honestly lose your trust totally, now I have a good quality gauge at home and a compressor. A good compressor is a must in any real garage. Then you can do your cars, blow the bike out to dry it, air dust things,
  21. there are multiple threads on this if you have a search. Bottom line is as follows. You can get no name rigid forks easily enough. If you want to go to a gravel handlebar then you need different shifter/brake levers/derailleur and that is where your major costs come in. A lot cut their straight bars down narrower, put some gravel tyres on and adjust the gear ratios and ride like that.
  22. Ya, all good, got a qualifier in the bag on Sunday. Not 100% happy so might have a snipe at BNAC or wally Hayward in the next few weeks. Tonsilitis and a badly sprained toe the week before my qualifier were not ideal, but ran again this morning and felt tired but good, body handled the marathon ok considering it all. The next 8 weeks are a big mileage block, going to be interesting to see how it goes... How did the marathon go? Start batch?
  23. the air you breath, the water you drink, the food you eat, it all has stuff that was bad for you in some way. There are bigger things to worry about IMO. If you have time to worry about water bottles you live a very charmed life
  24. Never mind the fact that 100 milers, expeditions and other endurance shenanigans are not healthy for your body either. (this is hearsay though, I don't quite believe it) adds flavour.... Although I must admit as a new dad, the baby bottle sterilizer is great on soft flasks and water bottles.
