  1. Scooters are dirt cheap, I think the big Boy Dlight is 17k new, ready with delivery box. You can run that thing 2 straight shifts with different riders, 5 mins to refuel. It will work day and night, get the job done faster. Tyres are cheaper and more durable. You can also hire anyone who can pass a learners test. They don't have to be somewhat fit or physically capable. This opens up a larger labour force. E-bike will fade in performance as rider tires, it is slow to charge and ke load shedding.
  2. I have driven through a few township areas recently and seen the continuous train of bicycle commuters out of mamelodi. I have yet to see a top end mtb or road bike there. You see a few which definitely look like a worker given an old hardtail or 26inch bike which I can appreciate. We have a farm worker on a momsen hardtail that was the mrs old bike. I still think this is mostly driven by demand for affordable high end bikes and parts. I often wonder how many are buying bikes and parts for dirt cheap knowing there are high chances of it being stolen...
  3. Ammunition is expensive and lawyers are even more expensive. Make sure it is insured and claim...
  4. I am going to go =>Warden, Bethlehem, Clarens same as last year. Entered big mountain, but I can still barely grip a handlebar after tripping and falling on Sunday so we will see. If I am in tears after day one then the mrs gets to say 'I told you so' and I will go get Xrays.
  5. I have done a few races navigating with a fenix 6x pro, I do have good eyes but even in the dark at cullinan to tonteldoos it was good enough for me. I do think though if you have a good watch then a proper bike unit would be better.
  6. on this note- unpopular opinion, but if you have the cassette off the hub, prepsol and a high pressure hose does wonders. In fact if you are taking things apart and are changing bearings or putting fresh grease in then prepsol and a high pressure cleaner do wonders.
  7. I know from Motorbike days X-Factor sports will do custom trailers to get what you need. Might be a good place to start.
  8. I think ours has been cutting grass since before I was born. It is ancient. Which might also be the problem. I am sure once it has some compression again it will be a bit more reliable...
  9. I have a stihl that has been standing since Jan, 1 load of dirty fuel because someone in the household thinks that leaving fuel tanks open in dusty environments is perfectly fine... I have cleaned that carb maybe 10 times this year. I am about to order a new fuel filter/pickup/tank and then a piston and head for it as well. Man I hate those stupid little motors.
  10. This thread has inspired me to monstercross the old hardtail. If there a way to run an XT 11 speed rear derailleur on a gravel shifter/brakes
  11. There are some other hidden gems like Tranquilitas
  12. Interestingly enough 2 fishermen in the states have been jailed for cheating in a fishing tournament. $2500 fine, 10 days in jail, 18 months of probation and the one had to hand in his $100 000 fishing boat. All for putting a few lead weights in a fish to make it heavier at weigh in.(fishing doping) Untill one of these big name cyclists and the team and the doctors and managers and coaches are sitting in jail for serious time, doping will go on and on.
  13. what works well with the shooting electronic ear protection is that when you are not using a machine you can still hear really well(in fact better), no one will sneak up on you and you can still have a normal conversation between cuts etc. I am considering buying a set for my one laborer as well so we can communicate easy while he helps when I am fixing vacuum pumps, stationary motors, generators and things like that on the farm.
  14. One thing that migrated to the workshop a few months back and has been there ever since is a pair of electronic ear protection. I have had them for a while for shooting and they work so well. Basically they can amplify the quieter noises and as soon as dangerous noise levels are around they kick in and protect you. But in a workshop they are even better, you can still hear everything around you and are comfortable and aware of surroundings but as soon as you kick on a loud saw or whatever they kick in and protect your ears. Gone are the days of ear plugs in and out and shouting at the Mrs because you forgot your ear pro is in.
  15. Next we can start a topic on the "toughest race in South Africa"
  16. https://www.inov-8.com/race-elite-3in1-glove?colours=616 if you can juggle getting an index finger out for the brakes or if you are happy to function in the mitten. These are awesome
  17. +1, the trainerroad adaptive looks really interesting, If you have a coach and use trainingpeaks then rouvy is also a great option, your coach can build the intervals in TP and they are there ready to do in rouvy. You can also download the route so you can save a bunch of bandwidth for the TV streaming.
  18. my 2c is that the trainer is the way to go. If I look at the running costs of riding outside or paying a gym for a wattbike. The trainer will pay itself off very quickly. In terms of the platform to run the trainer this is key. They all have dedicated training plans now, it is a bit harder to follow when you can slack off training at home. But I look at the turnaround my wife had with her cycling from a basic zwift training plan, it was impressive. She was a total beginner and now in terms of pedaling she can definitely hold her own with the average weekend warrior and has done some pretty big rides(200+km mtb). I dropped my virgin active membership in lieu of a used Wahoo kickr in 2017. I put my old hardtail on it. I run the old 10speed XT rear derailleur with the cheapest 10 speed road cassette and chain and a 40tooth chainring up front. Because it is a sterile environment the chain and cassette last forever on minimal lube(wax makes them go even further). We clean the chain every 2 weeks and re lube it every few rides. Means my weekend bike lives a pretty awesome life, when it goes out I am fit and enjoy the ride and it is looked after well and basically only has weekend and sunny days rides on it. With a new baby in the house I have had a few 10pm and 3am rides which I would not have done if I had to go to a gym. Even walking across the field to my personal plaas gym in the cold is a struggle some mornings. The big key is to make it hassle free, if you have to struggle, setting up bikes and tvs and moving furniture and fans etc, then you will not do it. If you commit to getting a basic set up permanently ready, you will do better.
  19. when we lived in Durban I used to go through Castrol DWF like there was no tomorrow. Used to spray and wipe tools and then the motorbikes also got the same treatment. and so did all scrap metal. https://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/FusionPDS.nsf/Files/CB59BC5F8B1DEC378025770C00428BEA/$File/DWF.pdf Then get the silica sachets from shoe boxes etc and put them in the drawers of your tool boxes.
  20. The other night I saw pre orders for the new sram strong hanger AXS for like 60k for a crank, shifter, derailleur chain and cassette. I couldn't believe what people waste money on, I nearly chocked on my 18 year old Glenmorangie.
  21. Thanks for this, good to see you have it on the policy, a lot of sites forget about it, so well done. Don't worry I have no intention of scraping bikehub, just poking the bear because I can. I don't need to build a dashboard to see the market is under pressure. For interest when you do bikehub classifieds year in numbers. Can we get a graphic showing the value of an item vs the length of time listed. I think it will be interesting to see if there is a correlation
  22. 100% and bikehub pay would only have a sample of the sold prices as well. In terms of secondhand bikes I believe it may be the single biggest source in SA. FB marketplace may challenge but I think bikehub might have more especially higher end bikes. Property is a million times easier, it also turns over slower and has the deed data to back it all up. But it comes back to seeing prices for sale are not sold prices.
  23. What are the bikehub's policies on web scraping? Asking for a friend... For work I used to- let's say "gather"- property data from a few sources for a bit of a market comparison, we would also map it spatially and do a few other things with it. There were a few key things to consider, asking price, time on the market and then for property we would get sold price. It gives you a far better indicator of how the market is doing. When the time on the market stretches out and the differential between asking and selling grows you know the market is under pressure. This often is followed by a general drop in selling prices over time. It is a good indicator to wait before buying. When the selling time is quick and there is little differential between asking and sold price then it is a good idea to buy as the price tends to rise thereafter. Anyways it was not perfect but for what we used it for it was dead on. We could spot in demand areas and uplifting suburbs and make decisions for our actual work. Bikehub pay could potentially unlock the treasure trove, but I respect them for keeping it under wraps. I think between energy costs and food costs we are in for a few rough months and luxury items such as fancy bicycles are dropping lower on many priority lists.
  24. 100%. Economically it does make sense. If a tracker is able to recover 1/5 vehicles. That 1/5 will cover the cost of the discount in insurance for the 4 not recovered. I will be happy as a customer, on my car it is like R500 off the insurance spending R99 a month on tracker so a net saving of R400/month. Tracking company is happy as they get a bunch of business. Win Win Win. Even Sars is happy as money is spent all round. My concern with a bicycle is that there is no electricity generation so the owner is in charge of keeping that tracker battery going. When it gets stolen and they can prove your battery is dead then insurance is not going to pay out. So that battery better last long and it better be easy to charge.
