  1. New year but no closer to being able to purchase a YT bike in SA it seems. Last year I gave up trying to get my hands on the new Jeffsy and this year I was very keen on the Decoy. This article gave me hope that it may well be possible: https://bikenetwork.co.za/top-10-2021-emtbs/

Unfortunately Black Sheep Bikes came back to me yesterday saying that YT cannot provide an eta on when they will start shipping to SA. Frustrating for both us and Black Sheep for sure.

I guess we'll just have to keep being patient or ride other bikes for now...meh bummer

  2. I wouldn't spray 'Bianchi' on a bike that wasn't a Bianchi.

I understand the sentiment but it's not a Bianchi.

As someone who gets really excited over guitars, I can build a Telecaster out of mahogany with a maple flame top, Wenge wood fret board, mahogany neck, locking tuners, the best pick ups and spec Pots and switches etc so it might play better than any actual Tele on the market, but I still wouldn't put 'Fender' on the head stock.

    But maybe that's just me.

    Love what they offer: https://www.blackbeardsden.com/

  3. Although I am an Apple fan, I've come to the realization that if you want accurate fitness metrics and GPS then rather use a proper watch like a Garmin, Suunto etc.

My wife has the Apple Gen 4 watch and if you tracking steps and minor metrics then it's ok but anything more advanced i told her to get something better. I have read that the auto-pause on the Apple watch may interfere with the GPS accuracy but haven't tested it out yet.

I'll look into the auto-pause suggestion since we do take a break after climbing and before descending

  4. Morning peeps, just curious if there are others who also find the apple watch (gen 2 in my case) GPS very inaccurate and inconsistent when the speed picks up?

Below are 4 runs up/down Afterburner (Banhoek). Going up things are fine and tracking nicely but the minute we go down it's all over the show. The blue line is my mate's ride (using a Garmin Fenix 3) and it tracks the trail perfectly and consistently every time. The green is mine and it was so inaccurate that strava did not even pick those segments up at all.

I've tried apple's suggestion of ensuring calibration is turned on etc. Is anyone using an apple watch which tracks very accurately compared to other sports watches or do I just accept that apple is not as good as other on this front? Currently I'm just telling myself that I'm simply too fast for it  :D

  5. There are quite a few posts on the topic, but I can't seem to get an answer that I'm happy with.

I am 1.72m tall, and currently ride a medium GT Transeo, I have close to zero experience in mountain biking.

I want to buy a hardtail trail bike for under R20k, and thought of getting a Silverback Slade or Trek Roscoe.

There is a large Roscoe in the classifieds, but according to Trek I should be on a medium or medium/large, however, the slade medium has the same reach as the Roscoe large?

Does this mean I can get the Roscoe large and it will fit more or less the same as the slade medium?

Alternatively, I must just be patient and wait for a medium trail bike to come onto the classifieds...

    attachicon.gifslade_vs_roscoe_geo.PNG

Current industry trends suggest you'll need a reach of 850mm by 2021 so might as well buy an XXL and stay ahead of the curve

  6. Really?

Poor and good service stories by the thousands can be told about every single bike shop that's ever existed. I've had poor service from CWC, but also good service from them. Same with multiple Specialized shops. Service is something that involves people and a @#$!-load of variables in each interaction, it's impossible for it to be consistent.

All that's happened on this thread now is that someone has created a complaint for others to latch onto. There are multiple threads about rubbish service from CWC all over the place if you go to the trouble of searching for it. Guess what though: There are also threads about good service.

To each person who has moaned so far in this thread: I'd be willing to bet my bike that your co-workers, boss, clients or someone else you deal within your job has complained about your service at least once in the last few months.

Why does our society have this incessant need to bad-mouth the shop every time they experience poor service from an individual?

I hate poor service as much as the next bloke but I always take it up with the shop's management directly. 9 out of 10 times they're going to apologies and attempt to address the problem. Surely, that's a much more constructive and effective approach to tackling poor service than tarnishing their reputation publicly.

  7. Not exactly the same choice but my friend had the Meta AM and Hyrax for weekend.

He went with the Meta as he decided he wants an enduro rig so with the suspension travel difference ot wasn’t really a fair fight.

I’m a big fan of Pyga but that Commencal sure is a tasty machine as well. Tough one.

  8. Ja.. sjoe.

The wife and I ummed and Ahhed about whether to become breeders. It was a big decision with the state of the world, how SA was looking etc but in 2018 we pulled the trigger. I'm essentially an 'older' 1st time kid producer so it was timeous.

My business was cruising, I went to World Champs AR on Reunion, we painted and renovated the house, got baby room ready etc...

2019 was more of the same, baby arrived in August and so we worked on less sleep, made it through season and through good planning, I had 3 bar worth of really good work lined up between Feb and June.

That obviously never happened, so with a 6 month old baby, we went from a well established, decent earning house to zero income over night.

My wife has been paid R6800 zar in total by her employers since March. WTAF.

Luckily we have super low overheads with no debt or credit besides the house and medical/stuff insurance. We as a company started trading again 2 weeks ago and sjoe... It is a welcome relief to see some cash flow. But the damage is done and whether or not we can sustain our staff and be busy we will only really see in December/jan and into what would usually be 'high season' Feb to April.

So while you make the right decisions, take risks, get your business going and feel like a self made king, sometimes you still land up getting the s**t kicked out of you! hahaha

I don't get breeders who clearly can't support their situation, but my advice would be to make sure you are VERY certain you want to put that strain on yourself financially, emotionally and regards your relationship.

I believe it is 100% worth it as my little dude brings me more joy than any bike, any ride, any toy.

But having really lived prior to becoming a dad I have nothing left to prove so can really be at peace with being with him, there for him and not think 'I should be out riding/traveling/drinking/whatevering'

I think that makes a huge difference too.

But what do I know, mine is still a freshie who can't even make sentences yet!

Sorry hear about your hard times man, hope it picks up in a big way and soon.

Everyone is different and I fully understand how/why some people choose not to have kids. But aside from costing me a fortune my kids have taught me a lot, like being (a little) less selfish and how to negotiate, lol.

For me personally, if my kids are the reason I'm unable to ever afford XX1 Eagle I'll consider myself a blessed man.

  9. Wait, someone conceded on a specific point after discussion with a fellow hubber, who brought some context to the discussion... This is madness! There is a glitch in the Matrix!

Seriously though, feel like more grown-up discussions are taking place nowadays.

Kudo's and Ride-On's to the whole lot of you lekker okes.

Agreed, many of us have posted stuff while hot under the collar that might not have been thoughtfully worded but it takes a certain level of maturity to concede to that when the red mist lifts.

  10. Having served and done my time in the forces and being the owner of (sporting / hunting) firearms the idea of riding with a side arm and thinking you could react fast enough in an ambush situation is ridiculous. Even highly trained personal freeze or are overcome very quickly in an active situation where   there is one and only focus. Training for professionals has to be constant and rigourous. Being on a bike, clipped in? Not a chance. You'll be very lucky if you don't have your weapon used against you.

Even if you see a couple of people you think of as 'bad guys' 50 meters out you then have to do a risk assessment and take proactive decisions to elevate the situation to a lethal footing. That is a big decision for a normal person and if you act in the wrong way, without strong cause, there will be chances for fatalities and long lasting repercussions across many lives. Even in a combat situation there are rules and repercussions. It's lives, not movies and you have to be utterly responsible for your actions.

In any situation you look to defuse and extract with the smallest of incidents. If there is a person who wants something and you can close the threat off by complying then that is the option. If possible I'd rather give away a bike than a firearm. The reports are not conclusive as to if there was a firearm taken but if there was then that is another weapon in society and there will incidents linked directly to that.

I'll caveat my comments above by saying that I am a gun owner and having access to any firearm comes with big responsibility. After all my experience it's simple, a pistol is not a close quarters weapon and in almost every case. In semi trained hands, the outcome will be not be good. I would not carry a weapon during any recreational activity in a public situation. There is a big difference between what people think they can do in a moment and what they are actually capable of.

I think what happened to him was disgusting and hope the assailants are found and punished asap. I hope he recovers well and can get back to a normal life despite this. Trauma after such an event will be large despite what the victim says and guys are terrible at dealing with aftereffects. I've seen too many lives blighted by thinking they have it under control and not. Thoughts go to Nick and his family.

If ever I considered carrying a firearm for self defense your post just put that to bed. Thanks for sharing your experience in such a concise and sobering manner. Group rides are probably our best defense.

  11. Shotto

    Had to ask!

Was hoping it would help a little with pedal strikes as I am not prepared to purchase a shorter length crank arm at the stage.

On my old Spitty, and under the recommendation of the Savage (Not the roadie Savage!!!) I changed it from low to neutral, and the bike really came alive, the BB increased ever so slightly to reduce pedal strikes and the bike just ripped .... and then it also cracked :(

High setting will definitely help with pedal strikes. I must admit that the number of pedal strikes was also noticeable for me on the Jeffsy but it’s probably to be expected in that setting.

The bike I have now has a higher than normal BB which apparently has some drawbacks when cornering but to be honest I notice the absence of pedal strikes much more than I do any loss of cornering abilities

  12. #4 YT Jeffsy 29 - And so I have a new member to add. Continuing along my ever increasing suspension travel journey I just could not resist YT's unbelievably rediculous deals that we are bombarded with in the classifieds :D One ride in and I'm in love. As great as the Pyga was this rear suspension on the Jeffsy not only keeps up with the Pike up front but actually feels like it surpasses it at times.

#5 Specialized Enduro 29 Elite - And yet again....another increase in travel!? I was convinced I would not go for more travel than what the Jeffsy had (140/150) but here we are....and with a brand I never thought I would end up with (simply because I prefer something less common).

I had the Jeffsy for 3 years and loved everything about it but then the itch came knocking. I was never planning on  an enduro bike at all and still maintain that a trail bike is more than enough for 80% our trails. Soooo, yes this Enduro is complete overkill, both for our trails and my abilities, BUT herewith my reasoning:

    1. It is very pretty....and carbon    ***ignore this reason

    2. My main reason for not wanting an enduro bike was having something that climbs like a dog because I'm not the strongest climber to start with. Either my Jeffsy did not climb too great for a trail bike OR this spez climbs incredibly well for an enduro bike but I honestly find it easier

    3. Another reasons for not wanting an enduro bike was dull/slow handling. This 2017 spez is NOT a slack and long bike compared to other enduro bikes by any stretch (*pun) but this is exactly what I like about it. In fact one review described is as more of an extremely long travel trail bike. It is still nimble and playful because of this geometry and that works lekker for my type of riding

    4. I got it for a real good deal

Anyway, without further adieu here she is:

PS, many of you will probably recognize it from about a month ago when it was advertised here on BikeHub

  13. There was a sweet 110 advertised here on Saturday for R30k ...that’s what got me thinking about the 110.

Yes thanks, well aware. It sold before my mate could get his finances in order. Gotta be quick to catch a Pyga...both on the trails and in the classifieds it seems

  14. Try to test the Giant Pinner DH flat pedals.

It is visually thinner and wider than other flat pedals.

Mine is 117mm wide, measured from the crank arm. With my size 44 shoes I use all of this extra width.

Also find the platform starts very close to the crank, but the extra width more than compensates for this

I also bought these for R1500 from Outdoor Escape and love it. Super light for alu pedals (390 grams) and very grippy with 10 pins per side if I remember correctly. I was after something very grippy like Spez Boomslang pedals but those are R2500. So while these are still not cheap it is well worth it in my opinion.

Giant might not be known for their pedals but I am really happy with these.

PS, I also saw the recalls about these and followed up with Outdoor Escape who assured me these do not fall in the recalled batch
