  1. At the risk of sharing a GCN video, here's a GCN video on DIY fuel. 🙃 I made the rocket fuel bottle and the rice cakes, and golly are both really good. The drink is really nice. I used caramel sugar as that's all I had and it's a ride highlight really. The MCT powder makes a huge difference. Calculate the energy in the bottle and consume accordingly. I used a 1:1 mix of sucrose (caramel) and maltodextrin, so it's not too sweet
  2. erm... these are politicians. what did you expect?
  3. mmm. seems insulin release isn't halted, rather insulin sensitivity is enhanced when muscles are doing work. https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/japplphysiol.00123.2005 (the conclusion is interesting) I wonder if there are any studies on chugging gels while out in the wilderness while being pre-diabetic? and then factor in a case where over-fueling is happening. what happens to the subject?
  4. is this the case? I ask because I don't know. a quick google reveals lots of journals I can't figure out quickly...
  5. What does the science say? Having a roadside gastro event, as miserable as that sounds, is hugely preferable to diabetes.
  6. I curious to know this... if I ingest 100g carbs/hr, but only expend energy for say, 60-70g/hr, what happens to the rest? If I keep pumping in an excess of 30g/hr into my body, what will happen? Will I need to replace my pancreas? Will my head unit give an accurate total of energy expenditure if I'm tracking watts and HR?
  7. Max Biaggi was sponsored by Shimano on his leathers/bike IIRC.
  8. I saw @Mamil and a few dozen other riders off earlier... Into the teeth a howling gale. I pity the poor souls out there right now. At least, if this wind keeps up, when they turn for home, the tailwind will be a Godsend...
  9. you are spot on. but... this is an instance where people and money intersect... name one such case in history where such an event has ended well.
  10. if they charge 250k and people buy it, then the price point isn't wrong. sure they could charge less and likely have a greater turnover from that model, but where would the exclusivity be if they charged less? that perception has a trickle down benefit for their other models. but for stages though, none of that applies. their demise is collateral damage from a very broken industry
  11. I wish I was as fat as the first time I thought I was fat
  12. Certainly doable... Pick a nice SE-er day, and you'll be doing world tour speeds. A small challenge you'll face will be long uphill drags and a few long rollers. The bigger challenge and danger will be vehicles driving in the emergency lane to allow faster vehicles to pass. This one gives me the heebie jeebies. If you feel the risk is worth taking, it'll be a great ride If you do plan on hitting the road for St Helena, your best option would be to take R27 up to the R45, then cut across to Vredenburg, pass through there (mind the wonky pedestrians) and head up to Stompneusbaai. The other route past Laingville is tight, under repairs and filled with drivers that bought their license on a 'buy one, get one free' special
  13. 55yo feeling like age is a creeping creeper, creeping up on my body with little finesse 1.79cm - getting any clothes and shoes on clearance sale is an impossibility 88kg up from 82 at the beginning of lockdown - lack of accountability for what I put in my body large full sus mtb large hardtail mtb medium plastic road bike medium gravel bike all pretty much boringly average. I wish I was an average rider though
  14. "If there is no activity on your Garmin account across all our sites and services over a long period of time, your account will be deleted per our privacy policies" can it get any more nebulous?
  15. ^^^^ this. I'm in a similar predicament, injury-wise at least. it's hard to stay on top of those demons and keep going as normal. baby steps and do what brings joy and what serves you best.
  16. roolz izz roolz my bru... of course, your argument makes perfect sense. sadly, their system does not accommodate common sense. round peg into a square hole. are you having fun yet?
  17. precisely this... for step #8, you can also just buy them Amazon UK stuff if that's the agreement. Or get them concert tickets. Luckily, my mates still maintain an SA bank account for some reason.
  18. nice steed. and based on that price, twice as nice as mine...🤪
  19. best we can do is this...
  20. mmm win the Epic or win 2 monuments...? hair shampoo and window companies will get more mileage out of one than the other...
  21. I've been on a Titan Carbon Comp since Nov last year and have been happy for every metre I've ridden. It's way better than I need it to be
  22. ITT seems like such a specialised event that needs so much preparation and fine tuning, I wonder where VDP would get the time to dial it in That said, his Giro ITT was pretty decent, but possibly against the favourites taking it a bit easy? hard to say?n He also did decently in the 2019 Tour of Britain ITT
  23. sure... a pumping tailwind can make this happen easily
